Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the British Prime Minister when Princess Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926?

Answer: Stanley Baldwin

Disraeli first became Prime Minister in 1868, Churchill in 1940 and Heath in 1970. At the time of her birth, the Princess Elizabeth was third in line to the British throne behind the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII, abdicated 1936) and her father, the Duke of York, later George VI.

Other events of note in 1926 were Gertrude Ederle becoming the first woman to swim the English Channel (breaking the record held by a man by almost two hours), Robert Goddard firing the first liquid fuel rocket and Emporer Hirohito ascending the Japanese throne.
2. Where did Elizabeth II receive her education?

Answer: At home with tutors

According to The Biography Channel (biography.com) the curriculum of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose included French, mathematics, history, geography, dancing, singing and art lessons.
3. What is the last name of the descendants of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip?

Answer: Mountbatten-Windsor

According to royal.gov.uk:
"For the most part, members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname (such as upon marriage), that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor.

The surname Mountbatten-Windsor first appeared ... in 1973, in the marriage register for the marriage of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips. Unless The Prince of Wales chooses to alter the present decisions when he becomes king, he will continue to be of the House of Windsor and his grandchildren will use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor."
4. In the period immediately following her marriage, what was Elizabeth's primary occupation?

Answer: Wife of a naval officer

The Duke of Edinburgh served with the Royal Navy Mediterranean Fleet on the destroyter Chequers. Among other places, the royal newly weds lived in Malta at different times between 1949 and 1951. While a young mother, Princess Elizabeth fulfilled her duties as a Royal Navy wife living abroad with her husband while her children remained in England.
5. According to biographer Sally Bedell Smith, what did the Queen carry in her purse?

Answer: Throat lozenges, a pen and eyeglasses

In her biography "Elizabeth the Queen: the Woman Behind the Throne" Smith notes that the Queen rarely carried money with the exception of a note for the church collection plate. Supposedly, her handbag also contained a portable hook with suction cap so the Queen could hang it up under tables. No looping the purse over the back of a chair for Queen Lilibet!
6. What was unique about the Queen's 1953 coronation?

Answer: It was the first televised coronation in British history

An estimated 27 million of the 47 million British citizens watched the coronation on the BBC. (In 1937 the BBC had televised the coronation procession of George VI but not the actual service). British coronations had taken place at Westminster Abbey for almost 900 years at the time Elizabeth ascended the throne.

A fun fact is that Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay summited Mount Everest on the same day. The Queen later presented a special edition Coronation medal with the words "Mount Everest Expedition" to them and their expedition party.
7. Why were Elizabeth's clothes often very bright colors?

Answer: So she is more visible in a large crowd

Her Majesty was quoted as saying, "I have to be seen to be believed." Her skirts were weighted to avoid flying up in a breeze, and the armholes of dresses and coats had a wide cut to accommodate her famous 'windshield wiper' wave. (Source: NY Times, 6/1/2012)
8. Except for the 2022 session, Queen Elizabeth II opened Parliament every year since 1954 with the exception of 1959 and 1963. Why did she miss those years?

Answer: She was pregnant with Princes Andrew and Edward, respectively

It was considered unseemly for a heavily pregnant monarch to open such a public event.
9. Queen Elizabeth spoke French fluently and did not require an interpreter.

Answer: True

Both the Queen and her sister, the late Princess Margaret, learned French from various French and Belgian nannies and governesses.
10. The Queen made her acting debut in July of 2012 in what role?

Answer: As herself in a James Bond spoof for the Olympics

Directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire"), the Queen and actor Daniel Craig filmed their scenes together in March, 2012. Stunt doubles did the actual parachuting into Olympic Park nearby the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremonies of the London Games.
