1. "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever". Which Asian campaigner for democracy said these wise words?

Answer: Mahatma Gandhi

Father of the Indian Nation, Big Soul, Man of the Year 1930, and Asian of the Century were all titles bestowed on Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. In a BBC poll in 2000 he was voted greatest man of the millennium. As a civil rights activist and visionary of Indian independence his weapons of choice were non-violence and non-cooperation.

2. "A man's got to know his limitations." This quotation is from a Clint Eastwood "Dirty Harry" movie, but which one?

Answer: Magnum Force

Clint Eastwood portrayed the laconic and cynical San Francisco detective Harry Callahan in five movies between 1971 and 1998. His second outing as "Dirty Harry" came in "Magnum Force " in 1973. The movie concerns an investigation Callahan carries out into the vigilante behavior of fellow San Francisco cops, including a rookie played by David Soul, and led by a lieutenant called Briggs played by Hal Holbrook. The quote "A man's got to know his limitations" is first said by Briggs to Callahan, then said by Callahan when he dispatches the vigilante.

3. Which US President gave the following mind boggling statement: "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is."?

Answer: Bill Clinton

When questioned by a reporter about Monica Lewinsky, Bill Clinton answered "There's nothing going on between us". During the impeachment trial he explained why he was not lying at that time: "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the - if he - if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not - that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement ... Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no." (from the Starr report)
Can we call him a quibbling lawyer here? Or rather say he was a quibbling lawyer?

4. Which great scientist said: "If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants"?

Answer: Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton is generally accepted to be the greatest physicist of all time. He made advances in many fields including optics, astronomy, laws of motion, and gravity, and was a co-inventor of calculus. He also served as the Master of the Royal Mint, and president of the Royal Society. His modest assertion that he stood on the shoulders of giants would have been echoed by generations of scientists who, in turn, stood on his shoulders, although Einstein, when asked, said that he stood on the shoulders of James Clerk Maxwell, rather than Newton.

5. About which opponent did Welsh rugby captain Phil Bennett rail in this pre-match speech? "They've taken our coal, our water, our steel. They buy our houses and they only live in them for a fortnight every 12 months. What have they given us? Absolutely nothing."

Answer: England

Phil Bennett was one of the greatest rugby union outside halves. He will always be famous for his role in what many call the greatest try of all time. Playing for the invitational side the Barbarians against the touring All Blacks of New Zealand in 1973, he caught the ball running towards his posts, facing away from the opposition, and jinked past four of them, starting the move that culminated in Gareth Edwards going over the line for a remarkable score.

The year before, Bennett had played for his club side, Llanelli, in a famous victory over the same opposition.

He played eight times for the British and Irish Lions, including an unbeaten tour of South Africa, and a tour of New Zealand, where he captained the team to defeat. Bennett played 29 times for Wales, leading the side to a Grand Slam in the Five Nations tournament in 1978.

His famous speech ahead of playing England in 1977 was from the heart - Wales is England's first and oldest colony and rugby union provides the Welsh with an opportunity to take out their frustrations against the English.

The team talk worked - Wales won 14-9. Question by Upstart3
6. Which French composer and "fantastic symphonist" made this bittersweet observation: "Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils."?

Answer: Hector Berlioz

Hector Berlioz was a French romantic composer and conductor. One of his most famous works is the "Sinfonie Fantastique". Born in 1801 he grew up in Napoleonic France. His life's path was meandering, shaped by unstable political times, adorned by many travels, romantic relations, and professional friendships.

His contemporaries considered him "unconventional", his work has been appreciated much more in recent times. The quote is from a letter written in 1856. In his later years, after many of his friends and loved ones had died, Berlioz became quite depressed and very aware of the shortening of life's span. Question by Xanadont
7. Which eminently quotable American author gave us this gem? "Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't."

Answer: Mark Twain

Mark Twain quite often took pains to find the rights words and create true gems of sayings. Many of these gems appeared as epigraphs to the chapters of his books "Pudd'nhead Wilson" (cited as from "Pudd'nhead Wilson's Calendar") and "Following the Equator" (cited as from "Pudd'nhead Wilson's New Calendar"). It is from the latter book that the above example stems.

8. Kevin Costner as Crash Davis said the following in which sporting movie: "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains"?

Answer: Bull Durham

"Bull Durham" is a 1988 romantic comedy set around the minor leagues in American baseball. Kevin Costner appears as Lawrence "Crash" Davis, a veteran catcher who is hired to work with and polish an exciting but erratic rookie, Ebby, played by Tim Robbins. Susan Sarandon co-stars as Annie, a woman who picks a player each year to take under her wing and mould or educate.

She is torn between Crash and Ebby, but Crash declines out of pride even through there is a spark between him and Annie. Crash and Annie both work their magic on Ebby, and he becomes a star player, in a winning team, who leaves for the major leagues without showing gratitude. Crash gets sacked and ends up with Annie. Ebby is seen in an interview saying the quotation in the question, one of the cliches he had been taught by Crash. Question by Gumby1967
9. About which Broadway play did the critic Walter Kerr give the damning and punning verdict: "Me no Leica"?

Answer: I Am a Camera

With the sentence "I am a camera" the narrator of the novel "Goodbye to Berlin" by Christopher Isherwood introduces himself as a witness to societal changes at the end of the Weimar Republic and the rise of the Nazis. One of the protagonists of the novel is Sally Bowles. The novel inspired the play "I Am a Camera" and ultimately the musical "Cabaret". Walter Kerr was an American writer and notably harsh theatre critic. Obviously the play to him was not worth more than the three words "Me no Leica".
