King James II Stuart of Great Britain's first wife, Lady Anne Hyde of Clarendon, was of the right religion for the royal family - Protestant. Lady Anne was born on 22 March 1637 at Cranbourne Lodge, Windsor, England, to Earl Edward Hyde of Clarendon and Lady Frances Aylesbury.

She married the Duke of York on 24 November 1659 in Breda, Holland. She was the mother of two Queens, Mary II and Queen Anne. The Duchess of York died on 31 March 1671 in Saint James' Palace, London, England.
