Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Britney Spears doesn't shy away from discussing her views on the world. What did she say that suggests her world view might need a bit of a geography lesson?

Answer: "I never really wanted to go to Japan. Simply because I don't like eating fish. And I know that's very popular out there in Africa."

Britney also made the memorable geographically-challenged comment "I get to go to overseas places, like Canada".

The other choices are all actual quotes, too. Jessica Simpson is proud to come from Texas, a state that she thinks has no anorexia. Christina Aguilera asked the question about the location of the Cannes Film Festival. And, Paris Hilton made the comment suggesting she's never heard of the retailer Wal-mart.
2. There are liars, and then there are statisticians. Whose knowledge of crime statistics led him to say "Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country."?

Answer: Marion Barry

Washington DC's crime rate generates its share of political hyperbole. In a quote fitting for this quiz, DC Councilman John Bowman declared:

"If crime went down 100%, it would still be 50 times higher than it should be."

Marion Barry has been exceptionally popular among D.C. citizens throughout his career in politics. Even after he was convicted and served prison time for drug possession, he was elected for a fourth term as Mayor, and then elected twice more to the DC Council.
3. As U.S. President, George W. Bush had reputation for plain and open talk. Which statement below did he make that was perhaps a little too open?

Answer: "You know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror"

Bush was often criticized that the link between terrorism and Iraq was tenuous.

Promoter Don King made the comment about speaking two languages and also being bilingual. NBA player Jason Kidd mistook a 180 for a 360. And, photographer Fran Leibowitz made the obvious link between diet and food.
4. Which celebrity left a few people scratching their heads when he or she said "[I hope] my child will be a good Catholic like me."?

Answer: Madonna

Madonna has attracted her share of religious controversy, with songs like 'Papa Don't Preach' and 'Like A Virgin', her often racy stage shows, and her film and photographic works containing erotic imagery.
5. Dan Quayle is famous for his misstatements. Which quote below did he make that suggests maybe his brain was getting ahead of his mouth?

Answer: All of these

The former Vice President provided both quality and quantity to his misstatements. He was subject of merciless attention by late night television hosts throughout his tenure as Vice President, and when once asked by a fan at a golf tournament 'what's your handicap?', Quayle replied 'Jay Leno'.
6. Actress Brooke Shields is a graduate of Princeton University, with a degree in French literature. Which comment below did she make, suggesting that even people who can get an Ivy League degree can sometimes stumble with their words?

Answer: "Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost an important part of your life."

The other quotes are provided courtesy of three other famous people. George W. Bush mixed up his verbs in the remark about children learning. Golfer Greg Norman may have mistakenly created the impression he has more than two parents. And, the ambitious existential linking of art, death, reincarnation, and paint brushes was the brainchild of Sylvester Stallone.
7. Which politician and movie actor once said "I think gay marriage is something that should be between a man and a woman."?

Answer: Arnold Schwarzenegger

In spite of occasional gaffes, each of these choices are generally regarded as articulate and witty (except by their political opponents). Here are some examples:

Ronald Reagan - "Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize it bears a very close resemblance to the first."

Clint Eastwood - "They say marriages are made in Heaven. But so is thunder and lightning."

Jesse Ventura - "If I could be reincarnated as a fabric, I would come back as a 38 double-D bra"
8. Yogi Berra has earned a reputation for mixing plain speaking with words and phrases that are just slightly off. Which of the following quotes did he make?

Answer: "Predictions are difficult, especially about the future."

Yogi's famous quotes - Yogi-isms - can be found many places online and in publications. Some of his other famous lines include:

"This is like deja vu all over again."
"You can observe a lot just by watching."
"When you come to a fork in the road, take it."

The quote about China being inhabited by many Chinese was made by former French President Charles De Gaulle. Former US Vice President Al Gore made the statement about zebra's spots on several occasions. And, the claim about the lineage of his own taste were made by David Hasselhoff (of "Knight Rider" and "Bay Watch" fame).
9. Perhaps the modern-day Yogi Berra is sports announcer John Madden. Which of the following quotes was NOT said by Madden?

Answer: "I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid."

Terry Bradshaw, another NFL announcer known for his exuberant diction, made the quote about being dumb but not stupid.

Upon leaving his position as coach of the NFL's Oakland Raiders, Madden went on to become an iconic sports commentator. His flamboyant style and pioneering use of the telestrator - where he could energetically draw on top of replay images - earned him fourteen Sports Emmy Awards. He also is a successful author and pitchman, and since 1988 has been the endorser for the popular "Madden NFL' video game series.
10. In 2007, Lauren Caitlin Upton was asked why she thought one of five Americans can't find the USA on a map. After giving a lengthy but incomprehensible answer, she was savagely ridiculed on television, radio, and online. Where was she when she made this gaffe?

Answer: In the finals for the Miss Teen USA beauty pageant

Ms. Upton was South Carolina's finalist in the Miss Teen USA Pageant. When asked about one in five American's being unable to find the USA on a map, her specific response was:

"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as in, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq and everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children."

Her response opened the door to intense criticism about the merits of beauty pageants, which often claim to promote scholarship. The video of her response was the most viewed clip on YouTube for September 2007.
