Answer: Gil Hodges

Hodges was a first baseman, and played 16 seasons with the Dodgers beginning in 1943. The Mets drafted him in the expansion draft of 1961, and Gil spent his final two seasons in New York. He managed the Washington Senators for five seasons before taking over the helm of the Mets, and took the Mets to their first World Series crown in 1969.

His number was retired for his managerial efforts. Manager Casey Stengel was the first Met to have his number retired in 1970. They closeted the number 37.
2. In which year did the American League change from a 154-game season to a 162-game season?

Answer: 1961

The first 162-game season in 1961, created much controversy as Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's season home run record of 60. Ruth hit his in 1927 in a 154-game season.

Foxx belted 58 home runs for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1932. After being traded to the Red Sox in 1936, he hit another 50 in 1938. Jimmie won three AL MVPs and batted for a Triple Crown. He retired with 534 home runs.
