Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where do you put your glove? How do you use the rosin bag? Interesting questions for someone who has only one hand. Which one-handed pitcher in the American League threw a no-hitter?

Answer: Jim Abbott

Abbott was born with no right hand in 1967. On September 4, 1993, he no-hit the Cleveland Indians. Abbott's New York Yankees won the game 4-0. Late in the game, Yankee fans were really letting the Indians and Kenny Lofton have it. Lofton attempted a bunt single in the top of the ninth inning.

The ball rolled foul, and Kenny eventually grounded out. Carlos Baerga made the final out a few minutes later, and history was made. Lofton has taken heat for his bunt attempt throughout his career.
2. A triple-play without the ball even being hit? It happened in 2008 when which American League team pulled this off?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

On a September 2 game in Tampa Bay, Raul Ibanez came to bat in the top of the first inning. He had Jose Lopez on third base, while Adrian Beltre was on first. Pitcher J.P. Howell struck out Ibanez on a called strike three. In the meantime, the Mariners tried to pull off a double-steal. Beltre was thrown out at second, then Lopez was thrown out at the plate to complete the triple-play.

The Mariners went on to win the game 4-3.
3. Two back-to-back home runs in the same inning has been accomplished many times in baseball history. What if the same batters who hit back-to-back home runs, did it again later in that same inning? It happened when which American League team saw their two players do this in 2002?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

In a crazy first inning on May 2, the Mariners batted in the top of the first with the White Sox hosting the game. Ichiro Suzuki led off the game with being hit by a pitch. Bret Boone came to bat and hit one out. Mike Cameron, batting third in the line-up hit one also. Later in the inning with two out, Boone came to bat and hit another one with Ichiro on base once again. Cameron then duplicated his earlier feat and hit another also.

The Mariners scored 10 runs in the first inning and went on to win the game 15-4.
4. Only one player in baseball history stole three bases in the same at-bat, but not second, third, and home. He stole second base, then first base, then second base again. Which Detroit Tiger player did this all legally in the early 1900s?

Answer: Germany Schaefer

In 1908, rules were written that allowed a player to steal bases in reverse order, for whatever strategic reason the team had. Germany Schaefer was a Detroit Tiger in 1908. On September 4, and deep into a pennant race with Cleveland, the Tigers and Bill Coughlin were at-bat. With a runner on third and Schaefer on first, the Tigers tried to pull off a double-steal, and Schaefer stole second. Cleveland's catcher Harry Bemis wouldn't take the bait and did not throw to second. Schaefer decided to try it again, and on the next pitch stole first base. On the next pitch he stole second again, and Beemis still didn't not throw to second. Schaefer stole second base twice, and first base once in Coughlin's at-bat. Baseball rules allowed this until rule changes were made in 1920.

The Tigers won the American League by only one-half game over Cleveland, then would be defeated by the Cubs in the World Series.
5. Hitting two grand slams in one game is a pretty remarkable feat, but would if a player hit two in the same inning? Which St. Louis Cardinal player did this in 1999?

Answer: Fernando Tatis

Tatis performed his magic on April 23 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Pitcher Chan Ho Park was most gracious in the third inning on that day at Dodger Stadium and served up both pitches. The Cardinals had an 11-run third inning on their way to a 12-5 rout. Tatis went on to hit 34 home runs in the season, a career high.
6. What a nightmare! I already have arachnophobia, but when spiders were chasing me in my dream, I got up and ran. I ran into a wall, fell through a glass table, then fell down a flight of stairs. I was a Toronto Blue Jay in 1990 at the time and was placed on the 15-disabled list after suffering cuts and bruises due to this freakish incident. Who am I?

Answer: Glenallen Hill

Hill was a utility player at each outfield position. In 1990 as a Blue Jay, the dream happened, along with the 15-day disabled list. The stitches healed, but never the ribbing that came from his teammates. The Blue Jays finished two games back of the Red Sox in the AL East. Hill played for seven teams over his 13-season career.
7. Throwing a no-hitter in your career puts you in an elite club, and highlights just how good you might be. Would if you threw two no-hitters, and both back-to-back? Which pitcher did this in the 1930s?

Answer: Johnny Vander Meer

Johnny played 12 of his 13 seasons with the Reds. He was a good, but not an outstanding pitcher. Like Don Larsen's World Series perfect game, one day in history can make a player a household name. On June 11, 1938, Vander Meer and his Reds hosted the Boston Braves and no-hit them.

In his next start on June 15, he went up against the Brooklyn Dodgers in Brooklyn, and no-hit them 6-0. Johnny went 15-10 in the season, and the Reds still finished in fourth place.
8. I was a Texas Ranger shortstop. I should have brought a chair with me during a doubleheader in 1976, because even though I played in every single inning, not one ball was hit to me. This set a record unless I fell asleep during the game and some got past me. Who am I?

Answer: Toby Harrah

On June 25, the Rangers hosted the White Sox for a twin bill. Harrah should have brought a newspaper or something because he didn't field even one ball hit. The Rangers won the first game 8-4, then lost the second 14-9.
If this wasn't strange enough for Toby, in 1977 he was part of another crazy event. He and Bump Wills set a record for being the first-ever two players to hit back-to-back inside-the-park home runs.
9. There's one million dollars missing? This happened to the accounting books of the Oakland Athletics during an annual audit in early 1982. One million dollars could not be accounted for. After a thorough investigation, and some with federal investigator's assistance, it was found that a one-million bonus check given to a player was never cashed, and instead was framed and hung on a wall Who was the player that caused all this commotion by framing his check instead of cashing it?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

This happened just prior to the 1982 season. When it became unfolded, the Athletics' general manager went to see Rickey and inquire. Rickey showed him the bonus check hanging on his wall, and the mystery was solved. Henderson went on to steal a record 130 bases in the season, and 1406 for his career.
10. This American League team had their gloves on in a game in 1990. They not only pulled off a triple-play in the game, but pulled off two. The result was that they still lost the game. Which team was this?

Answer: Minnesota Twins

The Red Sox hosted the Twins in July 17. The Twins pulled off the triple in the bottom of the fourth inning, then again in the bottom of the eighth. The Red Sox scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning, and won the game 1-0. Tom Bolton took the win for Boston.
