Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player in history to hit over 700 home runs in their career?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth retired in 1935 with the Boston Braves, after an infamous career with the Yankees. His record of 714 stood until near the end of the 1974 season, when Henry Aaron broke the mark while playing for the Atlanta Braves. Aaron retired in 1976 with 755 dingers.
2. Which of these teams began their franchise history as the White Stockings?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs began their franchise in 1876-1889, as the Chicago White Stockings. From 1890-1897 they were called the Colts. From there in 1898-1902 they were the Chicago Orphans. In 1903, the Chicago Cubs were born. During the 20th century, the Cubs won 10 National League Championships, including 2 World Series in 1907 and 1908.
3. What position did Cy Young winner Jim Palmer play, throughout his Major League career?

Answer: Pitcher

The Cy Young was only awarded an outstanding pitcher in a season, beginning in 1956. This Hall of Famer won the Cy Young award with the Baltimore Orioles in 1973, 1975, and 1976, while being runner-up with the award in 1977 and 1982. All 19 seasons were with Baltimore, helping them to 6 World Series appearances.
4. I played my entire 18 seasons in a Pirate uniform. I went to 2 World Series and won them both. I was the 1971 World Series MVP. I wore the #21. I had a .317 career batting average. I never retired, but expired. Who am I?

Answer: Roberto Clemente

Connie Mack was the only other one listed who played for the Pirates, but it was in the 1890s, well before the World Series was invented. Roberto, born in Puerto Rico, was killed during a personal humanitarian mission in an airplane crash on December 31, 1972.
5. What pitcher set a record, by losing 29 games in a season in 1905?

Answer: Vic Willis

The others listed, were not pitchers, and played more than 50 years later. Willis went 12-29 in 1905, with the Boston Beaneaters of the National League. After dumping Willis to the Pirates the following season, Vic went 23-13, with a 1.73 ERA.
6. Who was the pitcher that faced 3'7" pinch-hitter, Eddie Gaedel, in his only at-bat in 1951?

Answer: Bob Cain

The others listed were not pitchers, and retired well before the 1951 season. Another story about this fiasco, in the 2nd game of this double header: The home plate umpire (Ed Hurley) initially refused to let Eddie, wearing the number 1/8 on his jersey, come to bat.

Not until the St.Louis Browns displayed a copy of the telegraph to the league office that morning, placing Gaedel on active status, would Hurley let Gaedel bat. The game already had a setting of nostalgia, with fans wearing Gay Nineties apparel and riding old-fashioned bicycles. Gaedel walked and then had a pinch runner.

The pinch runner never scored.
7. What team plays at Bank One Ballpark?

Answer: Arizona Diamondbacks

Bank One Ballpark was opened on March 31, 1998, in downtown Phoenix. The stadium was built solely for baseball. The Diamondbacks played their first season in franchise history there. 4 seasons in Arizona, they won the World Series in 2001.

9. Which of the following teams appeared 5 times in the World Series during the 1990s?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The other teams listed, never saw a World Series in the 1990s. The Braves dominated the promised land during the decade. Even the Yankees only made 3 appearances. In 1991, the Braves lost to Minnesota, 1992 found a loss to Toronto, in 1995 they defeated the Cleveland Indians, and then lost to the Yankees in 1996. They lost again to the Yankees in 1999.
