Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first 2003 Major League pitcher to win 20 games in the season?

Answer: Roy Halladay

None of the others were 2003 pitchers. Halladay was in his 5th season, all with the Blue Jays. After 3 mediocre seasons, he pushed his way to a 19-7 record. This 26 year old, won his 20th in 2003 on September 11. September 11= 9-11, =20. Go figure.
2. Who won the MVP in the 2002 World Series?

Answer: Troy Glaus

The others had retired before the 2002 season began. Glaus of the Angels had 10 hits, 3 of them doubles, 3 of them home runs, along with 8 RBI's. He also batted .385 in the Series, that saw the Angels defeat the San Francisco Giants, 4 games to 3.
3. I led the league 12 times in home runs, and 6 times in RBIs. I only received the season MVP one time in my career. I have 15 World Series home runs to my credit. I also pitched in 3 World Series games, and won them all. Who am I?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The Babe won his MVP in 1923. He also led the league 11 times in most walks. Ruth would have led the league in home runs for 14 consecutive seasons, if it were not for Ken Williams of the St.Louis Browns / Tilly Walker of the Philadelphia Athletics in 1922, and then fellow teammate Bob Meusel in 1925. The Babe led the league 12 of those 14 seasons.
4. The Cleveland franchise was a new team to the new American League in 1901. What was their team name?

Answer: Blues

The others listed were all former names of the 2003 Los Angeles Dodgers. In 1901, the new Cleveland team was named the Blues. The name didn't work, as they changed their name to the Bronchos in 1902. Another change came in 1903, with the name of the Naps.

This lasted until 1914, before the Cleveland club became the Indians in 1915. Cleveland's franchise first World Series appearance came in 1920, when they defeated the Brooklyn Robins (later Dodgers), 5 games to 2.
5. The Chicago Cubs made their last 20th century World Series appearance in 1945. What team did they go up against?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

The other teams were all National League teams also, so that was not possible. The Tigers were led by slugger Hank Greenberg and pitcher Hank Newhouser. Detroit defeated the Cubs 4 games to 3, although the Cubs began the Series with a 9-0 shutout against the Tigers.
6. How many 2002 Chicago White Sox players hit 20 or more home runs in the season?

Answer: 5

The White Sox even outdid the Yankees who had 4. Chicago's blasters were Magglio Ordonez with 38, Frank Thomas the designated hitter with 28, Paul Konerko with 27, Carlos Lee with 26, and Jose Valentin with 25. In contrast, the Detroit Tigers had none. In 2001, Chicago also had 5 sluggers who hit 20 or more. The White Sox finished with a 81-81 record in 2002.
7. Which of the following, managed the same MLB team for 50 seasons?

Answer: Connie Mack

Mack managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1894-1896. He then managed the Philadelphia Athletics from 1901-1950. He took the Athletics to 9 American League pennants, with 5 of them World Series victories. Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy died in 1956, after a record of 3731-3948. Mack was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937, 23 years before he retired from baseball.
8. Which of the following hit more home runs in a season, while wearing a Boston Red Sox uniform (Be careful)?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

Although Williams leads this list in career home runs with 521, believe it or not, this season battle will most likely be backwards to the quiz players. Foxx hit 50 in 1938, Rice hit 46 in 1978, Yastrzemski hit 44 in 1967, and then Williams hit 43 in 1949. Foxx also hit 58 as a Philadelphia Athletic in 1932.
9. Which of the 5 inaugural Hall of Fame inductees, had the nickname of, "Big Six"?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

None of the others listed were inducted in the first year of the Hall in 1936. Of the other 4, Ty Cobb was the 'Georgia Peach'. Honus Wagner was the 'Flying Dutchman', Babe Ruth was the 'Bambino' and the 'Sultan of Swat', and Walter Johnson was 'The Big Train'. Mathewson was overshadowed much of his career by the great Cy Young and Walter Johnson. Mathewson played for 17 seasons, all but 1 game with the New York Giants.

He had 373 career wins, along with his 2 Triple Crown Awards in 1905 and 1908.
10. The 1962 New York Mets won how many games in their first season of baseball?

Answer: 40

1962 was the first season for the New York Mets. Managed by Casey Stengel, the team went on to a season record of 40-102. The team had only 1 pitcher win 10 games in the season, but also against 24 losses. This was pitcher Roger Craig.
