Answer: They were always the Expos

The Expos were an expansion team, and brought into the league in 1969. The team was managed by Gene Mauch. The team finished last, and shared the record of 52-110, with fellow expansion team San Diego Padres.
2. I played all my 20 seasons with one team. Although I never won an MVP Award, I led the league in batting 8 times. I hit .436 in 2 World Series, and I retired in 2001 with a .338 career batting average. Who am I?

Answer: Tony Gwynn

Tony played his entire career with the Padres of San Diego, from 1982-2001. This left-handed outfielder, batted over .300 19 of his 20 seasons. The others listed, were pitchers, never played for the Padres, and all retired in the 1960s.
3. What player set a baseball history record, by hitting .440 in a single season in 1894?

Answer: Hugh Duffy

Duffy played most of his 17 seasons, with the Boston Beaneaters (2003 Atlanta Braves) of the National League. This was Duffy's only stellar season, as he also won the Triple Crown in 1894. The others listed would not be born for almost 50 years.
4. Which of the following teams, did Leo Durocher manage to the World Series?

Answer: New York Giants

Leo 'The Lip' Durocher never managed the other teams listed. He won his only World Series in 1954 against the Cleveland Indians, 4 games to 0. He began his managerial career in 1939 with the Brooklyn Dodgers untl 1948. He then moved to crosstown rival New York Giants until 1955.

He retired but came back 11 years later in 1966, with the Chicago Cubs for 7 seasons. After 2 seasons with Houston, he retired for good in 1973. Durocher won only 2 other National League pennants. He died in 1991.
5. Yankee manager Joe Torre was once a player, and played what position when he began his Major League career?

Answer: Catcher

Torre began his career with the Milwaukee Braves in 1960, and took over the catching duties from Del Crandall. Torre played for 9 seasons with the Braves, before he was traded to the St.Louis Cardinals in 1968. He replaced catching great Tim McCarver.

In 1971 with the Cardinals, he was moved to third base to make room for upcoming catcher Ted Simmons. In 1971 he batted .363, and won the National League MVP Award. In 1975, he went to the New York Mets for his final 3 seasons.
6. Who was the only pitcher in the 20th century, to appear in 100 games in a season in 1974?

Answer: Mike Marshall

His efforts, and his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, earned him the National League Cy Young Award in 1974. He had a record of 15-12 with 21 saves. This helped the Dodgers to the World Series, but lost to the Oakland Athletics 4 games to 1. Only 2 other times in his 14 season career, would he appear in 90 games.

The other listed, never pitched, and retired before the 1950 season.
7. What player had the nickname of "Catfish"?

Answer: Jim Hunter

Jim 'Catfish' Hunter was a pitching great throughout his career. He played with the Athletics from 1965-1974. In 1974 he won the American League Cy Young Award. Another player with contract problems from owner Charlie Finley, Hunter was let go after his Cy Young award. Catfish went to the open-armed Yankees in 1975, where he continued his prowess with a 23-14 record, and struck out 177 batters.

He helped the Yankees to 3 of his 6 World Series.
8. Who won the 1968 World Series?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

No other team listed, existed in 1968. The Tigers were led by pitcher Denny McLain, who went 31-6 during the regular season. McLain's arm was backed by left-hander Mickey Lolich. The Tigers' bats consisted of Bill Freehan, Norm Cash, and Al Kaline. They beat the Bob Gibson led St.Louis Cardinals 4 games to 3. Lolich won the Series MVP.
9. What Mets pitcher, and former San Francisco Giant manager, had a win-loss pitching record of 10-24 in the 1962 season?

Answer: Roger Craig

The 1962 season saw the Mets in their first Major League season. They finished with a 40-120 record. Craig still led the team with most wins. He managed the Giants from 1985-1992. All others listed, never pitched, never managed, and retired before 1962.
10. What team had the best record in the American League Western Division in 2002?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

Although the Angels won the World Series, Oakland tied for the best record in the American League, with a record of 103-59. The Angels finished the season 99-63. Oakland lost to the Minnesota Twins in the Division Series.
