Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
A total of 13 teams from the UEFA confederation, which includes teams located in Europe and some Eurasian teams, qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Qualification for the World Cup consisted of two rounds, a group stage followed by a play-off round. The group stage was made up of 10 groups with either 5 or 6 teams in them, the winners of these groups qualified directly for the 2022 World Cup while the runners up in each group went to the play-off round where they were joined by the two best finishers from the Nations League who had not already either qualified or made the playoffs. Serbia, Spain, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Croatia, England and Germany were the teams that won their groups while Portugal, Poland and Wales qualified via the play-offs.
At the World Cup: Wales, Denmark, Germany, Belgium and Serbia all failed to make progress from the group phase to the knockout rounds. This was particularly surprising in the case of Belgium who were the number 2 ranked side in the world going in to the tournament. Spain and Switzerland were eliminated in the round of 16 while Netherlands, England and Portugal were knocked out in the quarter finals. Croatia were losing semi-finalists to eventual tournament winners Argentina while France beat Morocco 2-0 in the other semi-final. Croatia ended as the third placed team after they defeated Morocco 2-1 in the third place play-off game.
The final between France and Argentina ended 2-2 at the end of regulation time with Argentina having led 2-0 until 2 goals from Mbappe, in the 80th and 81st minutes, brought France level. The match went to extra time during which both Argentina (108th) and France (118th) scored to make it 3-3 and take the game to a penalty shootout, which Argentina won 4-2.
