A total of 13 teams from the UEFA confederation, which includes teams located in Europe and some Eurasian teams, qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. This was particularly surprising in the case of Belgium who were the number 2 ranked side in the world going in to the tournament. Spain and Switzerland were eliminated in the round of 16 while Netherlands, England and Portugal were knocked out in the quarter finals. Croatia were losing semi-finalists to eventual tournament winners Argentina while France beat Morocco 2-0 in the other semi-final. Croatia ended as the third placed team after they defeated Morocco 2-1 in the third place play-off game.

The final between France and Argentina ended 2-2 at the end of regulation time with Argentina having led 2-0 until 2 goals from Mbappe, in the 80th and 81st minutes, brought France level. The match went to extra time during which both Argentina (108th) and France (118th) scored to make it 3-3 and take the game to a penalty shootout, which Argentina won 4-2.
