1. Netherlands

Answer: advanced to round of 16

The Netherlands finished at the top of Group A and advanced to the knockout rounds. Managed by Louis van Gaal in his third spell as head coach, the team featured key players such as Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong and rising star Cody Gakpo.

Goals from Cody Gakpo in the 84th minute and Davy Klaassen in stoppage time secured a late 2-0 victory over Senegal in their first group match. After a 1-1 draw with Ecuador, the Netherlands confirmed their top spot in Group A with a 2-0 win over the host nation Qatar. 2. Senegal

Answer: advanced to round of 16

Senegal finished second in Group A to book their place in the knockout rounds. Coached by Aliou Cissé, the team progressed despite the absence of star player Sadio Mané, who was sidelined through injury.

In their first group match, against the Netherlands, it was a goalless draw until the final minutes, when they conceded two late goals (84th and 90th +9). They bounced back with a 3-1 win over the host nation Qatar. In the final, and crucial match, group match, Senegal ran out 2-1 winners over Ecuador. Kalidou Koulibaly scored the decisive goal in the 70th minute to ensure Senegal's place in the knockout stages.
3. Ecuador

Answer: got eliminated in group stage

Ecuador finished 3rd in their group and missed a place in the knockout round. Under the guidance of coach Gustavo Alfaro, the team kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 win over hosts Qatar. Enner Valencia was the outstanding player, scoring both goals. Ecuador continued their impressive form with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands. Cody Gakpo opened the scoring for the Dutch in the 6th minute, but Enner Valencia equalised in the 49th minute. The goal made him Ecuador's all-time leading scorer at the World Cup.

Ecuador took on Senegal in their 3rd game, a match that was crucial to their progress. Ismaïla Sarr gave Senegal the lead with a 44th-minute penalty. Ecuador's Moisés Caicedo equalised in the 67th minute to give the Ecuadoreans a glimmer of hope. However, Senegal's Kalidou Koulibaly scored the winner three minutes later to end Ecuador's World Cup campaign.
4. Qatar

Answer: got eliminated in group stage

Participating in their first ever World Cup as hosts, Qatar struggled to pick up points in Group A., despite their home advantage. They began their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 loss to Ecuador. Enner Valencia scored twice for Ecuador. In their second match, Qatar lost 3-1 to Senegal. Mohammed Muntari scored a historic goal in the 78th minute, Qatar's first at a World Cup.

However, Senegal sealed victory with a third goal in the 84th minute. Qatar failed to find the back of the net against the Netherlands in their final group game, ending their campaign with a third successive defeat. So Qatar's debut World Cup campaign ended with no points and three defeats.
5. England

Answer: advanced to round of 16

England advanced to the knockout rounds under the management of Gareth Southgate. They began their campaign with a 6-2 victory over Iran with six different players scoring for the Three Lions. In their second match, England faced the USA and despite creating a number of chances, neither side was able to break the deadlock; resulting in a goalless draw.

England finished the group stage with a convincing 3-0 win over Wales. After a goalless first half, Marcus Rashford scored a stunning free-kick in the 50th minute. Phil Foden doubled the lead just a minute later, and Rashford scored his second in the 68th minute, securing England's top position in the group.
6. USA

Answer: advanced to round of 16

The United States, managed by Gregg Berhalter, kicked off their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Wales. Timothy Weah scored for the USA with a well-taken goal in the 36th minute. In their second match, the USA faced a strong England team. Despite being the underdogs, the US put in a solid defensive performance to earn a goalless draw. The match saw the USA create a number of chances, but they were unable to convert them into goals.

In a crucial match for advancement, the USA secured a 1-0 victory against Iran in their final group match. Christian Pulisic scored the decisive goal in the 38th minute, bravely converting a chance despite colliding with the Iranian goalkeeper. The US defence held firm throughout the match to keep a clean sheet and secure the points needed to progress to the knockout stages.
7. Iran

Iran failed to secure a place in the knockout rounds. The team was coached by Portuguese Carlos Queiroz. The game saw Wales trailing after Tim Weah scored for the USA in the 36th minute. However, Wales' determination paid off when Gareth Bale converted a penalty in the 82nd minute. In the second match, Wales faced Iran in a high stakes encounter. The game was close until the final minutes when Iran scored two late goals. 13. France

France entered the 2022 World Cup as one of the tournament favourites, and their performance in the group stage solidified their status. In a remarkable performance, Tunisia secured a 1-0 victory, with Wahbi Khazri scoring the decisive goal in the 58th minute. The victory was a historic one for Tunisia, marking their first World Cup win against European opposition.
16. Denmark

Answer: got eliminated in group stage

Under the guidance of coach Kasper Hjulmand, Denmark fell short due to their inability to convert key chances into goals. They began their campaign with a challenging match against Tunisia, which ended in a 0-0 draw. Despite creating several scoring opportunities, Denmark was unable to break through Tunisia's solid defence. In their second group stage match, Denmark faced the defending champions, France.
