The USA finished second in their group and faced group winner Netherlands in their opening match of the knockout stages in the Round of 16. The Dutch favorites opened the scoring 10 minutes in before Daley Blind extended their lead to two goals before the half time whistle.

The Americans had a strong second half, scoring a goal in the 76th minute to give their fans some hope. However, the Dutch would put the game away in the 81st minute, eliminating the Americans with a score of 3-1.

The South Koreans would certainly have preferred not to face the five-time world champions in the KO round but the luck of the draw pit them against the Brazilians who took an early 4-0 lead and did not look back. The South Koreans were able to score one goal in the second half, but they went home after a 4-1 defeat.

The Portuguese manager made the controversial decision not to start star striker Cristiano Ronaldo in the KO round match against the Swiss. His decision would prove to be the correct one as the Portuguese would win the game 6-1 and progress to the quarter-finals.

The Moroccans played a highly efficient defensive game against favorites Spain, taking the game into extra time which finished scoreless. The Moroccans won the penalty shootout 3-0 and eliminate the Spanish from the World Cup.

The heavily favored Brazilians played the defensive Croatians in the quarterfinals to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes. Both teams would manage to score in extra time taking the game to a penalty shootout. Unfortunately for the Brazilians, the underdog Europeans would defeat them in the shootout 4-2 to advance to the semi finals for the second World Cup in a row.

For the second game in a row, a heavily favored team would lose to the Moroccans without scoring a goal. The Moroccan team scored right before the half time whistle and were able to secure the victory against Portugal and advance to the semi finals.

The French went into the half-time break of this exciting quarter-final leading 1-0 but conceded a goal courtesy of a Harry Kane penalty in the 71st minute. Olivier Giroud would then give the French a 2-1 lead seven minutes later and while the English would have their opportunities, most notably a second Harry Kane penalty late in the game, that was missed, they would fall short as the French would advance to their second semi-final in two World Cups.

The first African team to reach the semi finals did not disappoint their fans until they faced a far superior French team that got out to an early lead, going into the half 1-0 courtesy of a Theo Hernandez goal just 5 minutes into the match. The French would prove to be too much for the Moroccans as they would win the match 2-0 and go on to their second final in two World Cups, to face Argentina.

The Croatians had done very well to get to the semi final but they were outclassed by the eventual champion Argentinians going into the half-time break down two goals. They scored a third in the second half to defeat the 2018 finalists 3-0 and advance to the final to face France.

One of the most thrilling finals in World Cup history ended 2-2 after regular time and 3-3 after extra time. PSG teammates Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe would combine for 5 goals, with Messi scoring 2 and Mbappe scoring a hattrick (only the second one in a World Cup final in the history of the game; the first being Geoff Hurst for England in the 1966 final).
Argentina would win 4-2 on penalties to earn their third World Cup -- 1978 and 1986 were their first two.
