Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which year were the club formed?

Answer: 1862

Notts County were founder members of the Football League, and in that inaugural season of 1888-89, they finished 11th out of the 12 teams in the League. Only Stoke finished below them on goal average, as it was back then.
2. Where did the club first play their home games?

Answer: The Park

The Park was first used way back in 1861 by Notts County, with the Meadows becoming their home ground between 1863-77. Beeston Cricket Ground was used until 1880, and Castle Ground between 1880-83. A spell between 1892-1910 saw the club play at Trent Bridge, before moving into Meadow Lane.
3. Who was the club's first manager in their history?

Answer: Edwin Browne

Browne was County's manager between 1893-93, with Featherstone having just four months in charge afterwards. Harris lasted longer and was the manager between 1893-1913, with Fisher taking the reins between 1913-27. Other Notts County managers over the years have included Neil Warnock, Howard Kendall, Sam Allardyce, and Howard Wilkinson.
4. Which Italian team took their home strip in imitation of Notts County's black and white stripes?

Answer: Juventus

Legend has it that the colour used to fade on Juventus' pink shirts, so they needed a change. One of the Juventus players at the time had a friend in Nottingham who sent over the now infamous black and white shirts. The rest, as they say, is history.
5. Kevin Pilkington was signed by Notts County from which team in 2005?

Answer: Mansfield Town

Pilkington began his goalkeeping career with Manchester United in 1992. His first team appearances were very limited, however, as he managed just six League games in six seasons. During the Man United period, Pilkington went out on loan to Rochdale United, Rotherham United, and Glasgow Celtic. Pilkington signed for Port Vale between 1998-2000, and had a very brief stay at Wigan after that. Five years with Mansfield ensued, before Pilkington signed for Notts County in June, 2005.
6. Which of these played the most League games for the club?

Answer: Albert Iremonger

Iremonger played 564 League games for Notts County between 1904-26. Lawton played 166 games for the club. Masson made a total of 463 appearances, and Stubbs played 487 times for the club.

County beat Blackburn 1-0 in the semi-final, and won the cup by beating Bolton 4-1 at Goodison Park.

County's team that day was: George Toone, Theo Harper, John Hendry, Charles Bramley, David Calderhead, Alfred Shelton, Arthur Watson, Sam Donnelly, James Logan, Daniel Bruce, and Harry Daft. Logan scored an hat-trick in the game, with Watson scoring the other goal for County. Jim Cassidy notched a consolation goal for Bolton with three minutes remaining.

Answer: Newport County

9. As founder members of the Football League, who did Notts County play in their opening fixture of the 1888-89 season?

Answer: Everton

Preston North End dominated the first ever season of the Football League, by going unbeaten throughout the season.
