Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Millwall were formed on the Isle of Dogs in 1885 by workers of which nationality?

Answer: Scottish

Dundee-born workers at the J.T. Morton cannery, based at Millwall Dock on the Isle of Dogs, formed the Millwall Rovers in 1885. They changed their name briefly to Millwall Athletic in 1889 before becoming just plain Millwall later that same year.
2. Millwall were founding members of which league in 1894?

Answer: Southern League

The Southern Football League, which still exists, was one of the most important leagues in the early days of English professional soccer (besides the national Football League). Some of the most famous names in English football, such as Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Southampton, were also members in its early days. Millwall were champions of this league in both 1895 and 1896.
3. After moving between various grounds on the Isle of Dogs, Millwall relocated permanently south of the River Thames in 1910. What was the name of their new stadium, which would be their home for more than 80 years?

Answer: The Den

The Den was an apt name for a club nicknamed "The Lions". Situated in the alluringly named Cold Blow Lane, it would become one of the most intimidating venues for opposing teams and fans in the decades to come.
4. Millwall twice reached the semi-final of the FA Cup in the first decade of the 20th century. Which two teams thwarted them in their bid to reach the final?

Answer: Southampton & Derby County

Millwall and Southampton fought out a goalless draw at Crystal Palace in March 1900, with the Hampshire team winning the replay, 3-0, at Reading. In 1903, Derby would triumph over the Lions at Villa Park by a 3-0 scoreline. By strange coincidence, both Southampton and Derby would lose in the final to the same team, Bury.
5. In 1920, Millwall would finally join the (national) Football League, as a foundation member of Division Three. They celebrated their baptism with a 2-0 home win over which team from the west of England?

Answer: Bristol Rovers

On 28th August 1920, Millwall defeated Bristol Rovers 2-0 at The Den. They would go on to finish in a respectable seventh positon in Division Three in that debut season.
Division Three became Division Three (South) after one seaosn, when the Football League expanded by the creation of Division Three (north).
6. Millwall were promoted to the second flight of English football for the first time in 1928. They scored an amazing 127 league goals in 1927-28, including 9-1 victories over which two unfortunate teams?

Answer: Torquay United & Coventry City

Torquay were thrashed 9-1 on August 29th, with Coventry being put to the sword by an identical score on November 19th. Millwall finished the season as champions of Division Three (South), ten points ahead of runners-up Northampton Town.
7. Millwall's fortunes plumetted for a while after World War 2, but the appointment in 1982 of which manager, who would go on to achieve fame elsewhere in London, saw the beginning of a revival for the Lions?

Answer: George Graham

Former Arsenal player Graham arrived at Millwall for his first managerial role in 1982, and won them promotion to Division Two in 1985. He would return to Arsenal as manager the following year and guide them to numerous trophies.
8. John Docherty was appointed Millwall manager in 1986, and he guided them to the top flight of English football for the first time ever. They began that debut Division One season, 1988-89, in remarkable style, and actually led the table in the opening weeks. Which future England striker played a big part in the club's fortunes during this period?

Answer: Teddy Sheringham

Sheringham formed a potent partnership with Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino during the late 1980s, their goals playing a big part in winning Millwall promotion to the top flight, and keeping them there. A dismal second top flight season, in 1989-90, saw them relegated, and Sheringham and Cacarino soon departed for pastures new.
9. Millwall made the short journey across the borough line fron Lewisham to Southwark in 1993. What was the name of their new all-seater stadium?

Answer: The Den

Not very original really! The club decided that the name of the new ground would be the same as the old one. Although referred to in the media at the time as "The New Den", to distinguish the stadium from its predecessor, the home of Millwall since 1993 is officially known simply as The Den.
10. Millwall reached their first-ever FA Cup Final in 2004, losing to Manchester United. Where did this game take place?

Answer: Millennium Stadium

Wembley Stadium was in the process of being rebuilt in 2004, so the final took place at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. There would be no happy ending for the Lions though, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud Van Nistelrooy (2) scoring the goals in a 3-0 Manchester United win.
