Answer: 1932

Wigan Athletic didn't gain entry into the Football League until the 1978-79 season, where they went on to finish 6th in the old Fourth Division.
2. Where did the club first play their home games?

Answer: Springfield Park

Springfield Park was used by Wigan between 1931-98, before they moved into the brand new purpose-built JJB Stadium. Central Road and Bolton Lane do not exist.
3. Who was the club's first manager in their history?

Answer: Charlie Spencer

Spencer was Wigan's manager between 1932-37, with Milne taking over for a year after World War II. Pryde was in charge during 1949-52, and Goodier, 1952-54. Other Wigan managers have included John Deehan, Bruce Rioch, Paul Jewell, and, briefly, Sir Bobby Charlton.
4. Wigan were promoted to the Premiership for the first time in their history in the 2004-05 season, largely due to their rock-solid defence. How many goals did they concede?

Answer: 35

Wigan conceded the fewest goals in the Championship that season. Eventual champions, Sunderland, were the 2nd meanest defence with 41 goals against, and Reading, who finished out of the play-off places were 3rd with 44 goals against.

Answer: Gary Pallister

Pallister played for Middlesbrough, Darlington, and most famously, Manchester United. Former Liverpool great Kennedy, played 22 League games for the Latics during the 1987-88 season. Gemmill played just 11 times for the club in the 1982-83 season, and Beasant became the oldest player ever to play for the club at the age of 43 in 2002.

Langley played 317 League games for Wigan between 1981-94. Carroll made 136 appearances for the club between 1997-2001. Jones played 104 times in the League for Wigan, and Jarrett pulled on the Wigan shirt 95 times in the League.
7. Where did Wigan sign Per Frandsen from in 2004?

Answer: Bolton Wanderers

A Danish international, Frandsen began his career with B1903 Copenhagen in 1990. After 25 League games for the club, he signed for Lille in France, and played there between 1990-94. A move back to Denmark with FC Copenhagen followed, and Frandsen stayed for a further two seasons before taking a shot at English football. Frandsen played for Bolton twice between 1996-99, and 200-04. Blackburn had one season out of him in 1999-2000. Frandsen signed for Wigan in June, 2004.
8. Who took over as Wigan chairman in 1995?

Answer: Dave Whelan

A former footballer himself, Whelan was famously stretchered off with a broken leg in the 1960 FA Cup final while playing for Blackburn Rovers against Wolverhampton Wanderers. By the turn of the 21st century, Whelan had amassed a fortune through sports stores throughout the United Kingdom.
9. In 1997, Wigan set the record for their biggest League win. Who did they beat 7-1 that season?

Answer: Scarborough

On 11th March, 1997, Wigan beat Scarborough 7-1 in a League Division Two game at Springfield Park. David Lowe and Isidro Diaz each scored twice, with Roberto Martinez, Graham Lancashire, and Wayne Biggins also on the scoresheet.
10. Who did Wigan face in the 1985 Freight Rover Trophy final?

Answer: Brentford

The Freight Rover Trophy consisted of 24 teams from the then Third and Fourth Divisions, which were separated into North and South. Wigan's results in that competition that season were: 2-2 and 3-1 with Wrexham, 1-0 against Bury, 3-1 against Tranmere Rovers, 3-1 against Lincoln City, and 1-1 with Mansfield Town in the Northern Area Finals, which Wigan won on penalties. Wigan beat Brentford 3-1 in the final.
