1. In which year was FC United of Manchester founded?

Answer: 2005

The club was formed in June 2005 by Manchester United supporters, in response to the takeover of Mancheser United FC by Malcolm Glazer (completed in May 2005). He also owned the NFL club Tampa Bay Buccaneers. FCUM became a member of the Football Association (Mancheser County FA) on 14th June 2005.

Answer: Leigh Railway Mechanics Institute

Leigh RMI were in financial difficulties in mid-2005, and asked if FC United would take them over. This was decided against as one of the main reasons the club was formed was in protest to Glazer's takeover of Manchester United (they felt that taking over another club wasn't appropriate).

The friendly against Leigh RMI was played on 16th July 2005, and finshed 0-0. The second game in the club's history was a 0-1 loss against AFC Wimbledon on 23rd July 2005.
3. Upon their formation, where did FC United play their home games?

Answer: Gigg Lane

The club shared Gigg Lane with Bury FC. All of FC United's home games in their first two deasons were played there, apart from one fixture in February 2006 against Holker Old Boys, which was played at Moss Lane, Altrincham.
4. Who was the first manager of FC United?

Answer: Karl Marginson

He was appointed as manager on 22nd June 2005 (one of the players, Joz Mitten, recommended him to the board). During his playing days Maginson had played for clubs such as Blackpool, Rotherham United and Macclesfield Town.

Answer: North West Counties Division Two

North West Counties Division Two is nine steps below the FA Premier League. The league had four spare places at the time, so no other club was denied promotion as a result of the admission of FC United.

Answer: Those who pledged money to the club had a vote

The club's founders originally chose the name FC United, but the Football Association rejected it as a team name as it was "too generic". Everyone who had a vote was asked to choose between FC United of Manchester, FC Manchester Central, AFC Manchester 1878 and Newton Heath United FC. The name FC United of Manchester won, with 44% of the vote at a meeting on 14th June 2005.

Mancheser United was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR. Manchester Central was one of the names considered in 1902, when Newton Heath became Mancheser United.
7. How did the club find its players?

Answer: The club held trials

The trials were held on 26th June 2005. Of the 900 players who applied to take part in the trials, 200 were asked to do so, and 17 were chosen to play for FC United.
8. Against which team did FC United play its first league match?

Answer: Leek CSOB

It was arranged for FC United to play their first game away to the team with the biggest home ground in the NOrth West Counties League, to see if other teams would be able to host FC United at their grounds. It took place on 13th August 2005, and was the first ever all ticket game in the history of the league.

The attendance for this game was 2,590 which was a new record for the NWCFL. It was larger than the total attendance for all of Leek CSOB's home games for the previous season. FC United won their first league game 5-2.
9. Which player scored from the half way line against Silsden on 16th September 2006, straight from the kick off?

Answer: Rory Patterson

Patterson is Irish and plays as a striker. FC United won 4-2 with Patterson getting two of the goals - 3,381 people were there to see the wonder goal.
10. Football Club United of Manchester gained promotion after their first season.

Answer: True

The trophy was awarded at the home game against Great Harwood Town FC on Saturday 22nd April 2006, in front of a crowd of 6,023 (a record attendance for the NWCFL).
