Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which pitcher led the Majors in 2008 by hitting the most batters?

Answer: Daniel Cabrera (Orioles)

Cabrera was the runner-up in 2007 after hitting 15. Unfortunately, he went the wrong way in stats and hit 18 in 2008 to lead the league.
2. Which of the following did not have the nickname "Hawk"?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

It was Dodger pitcher Ralph Branca who dished up Bobby Thomson's historical home run in 1951. Dawson played for 21 seasons, mostly with the Expos and Cubs, and hit 438 career home runs. Harrelson played with four teams in nine seasons, and all in the American League from 1963-1971. Ryan's nickname was the Ryan Express.

He retired with a Major League leading 5714 strikeouts and seven no-hitters.
3. From 1949-1958, the New York Yankees won the American League pennant in every season except one. Which team won it when they didn't?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

What a 10-season run that the Yankees had. From 1949-1953, they won all five World Series. In 1954, the 111-43 Indians took the American League crown, but lost in the promised land to the Giants. Beginning in 1955, the Yankees ran another 10 seasons of greatness, winning the American League pennant eight more times.
4. Ty Cobb set an American League record for stealing second base, then third, then home, all in one at-bat. He did this in four different games. Who was the first National Leaguer to do this four different times also?

Answer: Honus Wagner

Wagner did it with the Louisville Colonels in 1899, then three times with the Pirates. While Cobb stole 892 bases in 24 seasons, Wagner stole 722 in 21 seasons. Both players were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
5. The 1967 World Series between the Cardinals and Red Sox came down to the deciding game seven. Both Bob Gibson and Jim Lonborg were shooting for their third win of the series. The Cardinals won the game and the series, and Bob Gibson was the series MVP. Which Cardinal batted .414 and stole a record seven bases in the series also?

Answer: Lou Brock

Gibson not only won three games for the Cardinals, but struck out 26 Red Sox batters in the process. Brock had eight singles, two doubles, a triple, and a home run in the series. Carl Yastrzemski hit three home runs for the Red Sox also.
6. Bobby Lowe of the Boston Beaneaters was the first National League player to belt four home runs in one game. Which American Leaguer in the 1930s was the first to do it?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

In June 1932, Gehrig of the Yankees popped for these four in the game. By 1932, Babe Ruth had hit 652 home runs, but never four in a game, and never did. The next American Leaguer to hit four was Pat Seerey of the Chicago White Sox. In July 1948, the outfielder hit four of his season's 19.
7. Which slugger in 2008 hit his 400th career home run?

Answer: Chipper Jones

The others were all retired and never reached the 400-plateau. Chipper was in his 15th season with the Braves in 2008. His 22 in the season brought him to number 408. In those 15 seasons, Chipper had also hit 449 doubles.
8. Who was the first manager inducted into the Hall of Fame that never played the game?

Answer: Joe McCarthy

McCarthy's first job was with the Chicago Cubs from 1926-1930. With one NL pennant under his belt, he took his services to the Yankees for 16 seasons. Joe had his Yankees in the World Series eight times, winning seven of them. He retired after the 1946 season, then was coaxed back by the Red Sox in 1948. Robinson played for 17 seasons, Comiskey for 13, and Mack in 11.
9. Three American League players pulled off an unassisted triple-play before a National Leaguer was able to do it. Neal Ball was the first player in the AL in 1909. Who was the first in the National Leaguer to do this?

Answer: Ernie Padgett

Padgett was a Boston Braves rookie shortstop in 1923 when he pulled this off. He played in only four games in the entire season. His triple-play was accomplished in the last game of the season in October.
10. Which Major League team won the most games in 2008?

Answer: Angels

The others didn't reach the 80-win mark. The Angels were the only team to reach the century mark while losing 62 games. The Cubs and Rays were the runner-up teams, both winning 97. The Washington Nationals brought up the rear with the worst record in the season. They went 59-102.
