Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What stadium hosted Super Bowl XLVIII, its first Super Bowl?

Answer: MetLife Stadium

MetLife Stadium is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The New York Giants and New York Jets play their home games there. Super Bowl XLVIII was the first outdoor Super Bowl to ever be hosted by a "cold-weather" city. The previous Super Bowls had been held in warm climates or in temperature-controlled domes.

Some people thought that it might snow during the Super Bowl, but the kickoff temperature ended up being a pleasant 49 degrees Fahrenheit (about 9 degrees Celsius).
2. Who sang the U.S. National Anthem before the Super Bowl?

Answer: Renee Fleming

Renee made history as the first opera singer to ever sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. She had been an opera singer for over 30 years, acting in numerous operas over her long career. She has won Grammy Awards for Best Classical Vocal Performance in 1999 and 2003 and for Best Classical Solo in 2013.
3. The scoring began early in Super Bowl XLVIII. Within twelve seconds of opening kickoff, a team had scored. What happened?

Answer: Seattle got a safety

On the first play of Denver's first drive, Denver center Manny Ramirez's snap flew over quarterback Peyton Manning's head and into the end zone. Running back Knowshon Moreno recovered the ball in his own end zone where he was tackled for a safety (giving Seattle 2 points).

It was the quickest score in Super Bowl history (the previous record was 14 seconds n Super Bowl XLI, when the Chicago Bears returned the kick-off for a TD -- Indianapolis Colts recovered to win 29-17 in February 2007).
4. Near the end of the first half, Peyton Manning threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown by the Seahawks. What Seahawks linebacker scored this touchdown?

Answer: Malcolm Smith

This score further increased Seattle's lead, making the score 22-0 Seahawks before the half. Later in the game, Smith also recovered a Denver fumble. Although Smith was drafted in the seventh round, he earned a starting spot on the Seahawks' defense and was later named Super Bowl MVP (Most Valuable Player).
5. What acts performed during the Super Bowl halftime show?

Answer: Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers

During the show, Mars performed some of his hits like "Treasure", "Locked Out of Heaven", and "Just The Way You Are". Controversy arose when it was later revealed that the Red Hot Chili Peppers' guitars were not plugged in to any amplifier (they were playing to a pre-recorded track).

The Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show was one of the most-watched in Super Bowl history, drawing about 115.3 million viewers.
6. The second half started with a bang when what player returned a kickoff for a touchdown?

Answer: Percy Harvin

Harvin returned the football 87 yards for a touchdown, making the score 29-0 Seahawks. Harvin joined the Seahawks in 2013, having previously played for the Minnesota Vikings. He was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year by Associated Press and was elected to the Pro Bowl in 2009.
7. What undrafted Seahawks wide receiver caught a touchdown pass from Russell Wilson in the 3rd quarter of the game to further extend Seattle's lead?

Answer: Jermaine Kearse

The score was 36-0 after the Kearse TD (plus PAT). Kearse went to the University of Washington and was signed by the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Prior to the 2013 season, Kearse had LASIK eye surgery to improve his vision and reduce his number of dropped passes.

He scored four touchdowns during the 2013 regular season and had four receptions for a total of 65 yards in the Super Bowl.
8. The score was 36-0 when the Broncos finally scored in the 3rd quarter, when Peyton Manning threw a touchdown pass to what Denver receiver?

Answer: Demaryius Thomas

Thomas went to Georgia Tech University and broke the record for most receptions in a Super Bowl with 13. Thomas was elected to the Pro Bowl in both 2012 and 2013. It was very hard for the Broncos to score any points against Seattle's vaunted defense (nicknamed "The Legion of Boom"). "The Legion of Boom", led by players like cornerback Richard Sherman and safety Earl Thomas, rattled opponents all season and preventing opposing offenses from getting into any rhythm during games.
9. How many yards did Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson throw for during the game?

Answer: 206

Russell was drafted by the Seahawks in the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Wilson originally played for North Carolina State University, but he later transferred to the University of Wisconsin. Wilson also played baseball, getting drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 4th round of the 2010 MLB Draft. He later left professional baseball to pursue a career in the NFL.
10. What was the final score of Super Bowl XLVIII?

Answer: Seattle Seahawks 43-8

Super Bowl XLVIII was one of the biggest blowouts in Super Bowl history, with Seattle winning by 35 points (the record was 55-10 when SF 49ers beat the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV, January 1990). In the end, Seattle's defense was too much for Denver's vaunted offense.

Although Peyton Manning and the Broncos had a magnificent season (earning the #1 seed in the American Football Conference), they fell short against Seattle's "Legion of Boom". It was Seattle's first ever Super Bowl victory.
