Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team won the coin toss?

Answer: New England Patriots

The Eagles, wearing their green uniforms, got to call the coin toss. They called tails, and the toss came up heads. New England won the toss and elected defer getting the ball until the second half. This meant Philadelphia got the first possession of the game.
2. Which team scored first?

Answer: Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles got the ball first. they returned the opening kickoff from the 1-yard line to the 25. Their first play was a 5-yard pass, with Kyle Van Noy making the tackle. Their second play was also a pass, and then on 3rd down and 4-yards to go, they picked up the first down with a 17-yard pass.

The next set of downs included a rush for a loss of 2 yards, an incomplete pass, and a 15-yard completion. The third set of downs, inside Patriots territory, included an 8-yard pass, and a rush to set up another first down at the New England 28-yard line.

A rush for 6 yards and a long pass play set up the Eagles for a first and goal to go situation on the Patriots 5-yard line. The drive ended with a 4-yard rush, a false start penalty to push the Eagles back to the 6-yard line, and a pair of incomplete passes before the Eagles kicked a field goal for the early 3-0 lead.
3. Which player was responsible for scoring the first points?

Answer: Jake Elliott

Elliott, a rookie kicker for the Eagles, nailed a 25-yard field goal with 7:55 to play in the opening quarter. The drive was 14 plays long. Elliott was signed after a week one injury to the regular Eagles kicker.

Both Elliott and Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski played their college football at the University of Memphis, just 11 years apart. Gostkowski kicked a 26-yard field goal to tie the score with 4:17 left in the opening quarter.
4. Who scored the first touchdown of the game?

Answer: Alshon Jeffrey

Jeffrey caught a 34-yard touchdown pass with 2:34 to play in the opening quarter. After the failed extra point, the Eagles lead was 9-3. The pass came from Eagles quarterback Nick Foles. Foles was starting in place of the injured Carson Wentz.
5. What was the halftime score?

Answer: 22-12 Philadelphia

After three missed kicks (a field goal and two extra points), the Eagles took the halftime lead at 22-12. The Eagles took a 9-3 lead after the first quarter, and expanded it in the second quarter.

Eagles QB Nick Foles went 13/22 for 215 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also caught a 1-yard TD pass on a trick play. Tom Brady of the Patriots went 12/23 for 276 yards in the first half. He had no touchdowns or interceptions. According to the television commentators during the game, it was the first game in NFL history to have that exact halftime score.
6. Which team scored the first points in the second half?

Answer: New England Patriots

Justin Timberlake performed the halftime show. He performed a medley of several of the hit songs from his career across multiple stages.

The Patriots got the ball to start the second half. Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski came out on fire in the second half, after connecting for just a single completion in the first half, they hooked up four times on a 75-yard scoring drive. It was capped off by a 5-yard Gronkowski scoring catch to pull the Patriots to within 22-19 after the extra point. The Eagles led 29-26 after the third quarter.
7. Tom Brady was ejected from the game for deflating balls. The low-pressured balls were discovered at half-time.

Answer: False

That was during an AFC Championship game several years earlier. Though Brady wasn't ejected from the game that day either. He was suspended for several regular season games instead, as it couldn't be proven he had directly been involved. This was Brady and the Patriots' second Superbowl appearance since "Deflategate" in 2015.

They won Super Bowl LI, and played in Super Bowl LII after the controversy.
8. Trey Burton threw a touchdown pass to (usual) quarterback Nick Foles. Who was the official quarterback for the play?

Answer: Corey Clement

Kelce was the center, he snapped the ball to (normal) running back Clement. Clement then handed the ball off to Burton, who threw the ball to Foles for the 1-yard touchdown catch. Foles himself is normally a backup QB. He started all three Eagles playoff games after Carson Wentz got injured. Earlier in the game New England quarterback Tom Brady acted as a receiver on a similar play, but failed to catch the pass.

When Foles caught his touchdown, that made the score 22-12 at the time in the second quarter. The catch made him the first player to throw and catch a touchdown pass in the same Super Bowl game.
9. Who won the game?

Answer: Philadelphia Eagles

Trailing most of the way, the Patriots took the lead for the first time in the game during the fourth quarter. The Patriots took their first lead at 33-32 with about 9:22 to play in the game. The Eagles went down and scored a touchdown with 2:21 to play. They failed on the 2-point conversion attempt, putting their lead at 38-33.

After an 8-yard pass to Rob Gronkowski, Tom Brady was sacked for the first time and fumbled the ball. The Eagles recovered and ended up scoring a field goal to go up 41-33 with 1:05 to play. A Hail Mary pass went incomplete at the end of the game and the Eagles won.

It was the first Super Bowl championship for the Eagles.
It set a new record for highest score for the losing side in the Super Bowl in NFL history.
The two teams racked up 1,152 yards of total offense, another new record in NFL history for any regular or post-season game.
10. Who was named MVP?

Answer: Nick Foles

Foles became the MVP, making it the 29th time a quarterback had won the award in 52 Super Bowls. Foles went 28/43 for 373 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception. He also caught a touchdown pass.

Blount, who played for the Patriots last season, won his second straight Super Bowl, had 14 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown. Brady and Gronkowski both played for the Patriots. Brady went 28/48 for 505 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions, but he lost a fumble. Gronkowski caught 9 passes for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Ironically, the last time a backup QB (defined as not the announced starter at the beginning of a season for his team) won the Super Bowl, it was Tom Brady with his first championship in 2001. Overall Foles was the 8th QB to be classified as a backup at the start of the season and start (and win) the Super Bowl.
