Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Fight or Flight" opens with Ensign Sato in sickbay, observing a lifeform that she found on a planet they explored. What kind of creature is it?

Answer: A slug

Hoshi is very concerned about the slug, as 'she' is not doing well. Dr. Phlox believes that it is only a matter of time until the slug dies, and recommends that they feed it to his Pyrithian bat.

In two weeks of exploration, the Enterprise has not discovered anything of any real interest, least of all contact with any new species. Everyone on board (except, perhaps, for T'Pol) is feeling a little antsy, hoping for something of significance to happen.

Ensign Hoshi Sato was played by Linda Park, while Dr. Phlox was portrayed by John Billingsley.
2. Both Sub-Commander T'Pol and Ensign Sato visit Captain Archer in his quarters to discuss various matters, but Archer is distracted by something. What is it that is bothering him?

Answer: A squeak under the deck plating

It is the classic situation - he hears a squeaking sound, but when he tries to pinpoint its location, it stops happening. Even while he is speaking with T'Pol, he gets down on his knees and puts his ear to the deck plating.

When Hoshi arrives, she is also finding 'little' things that are bothering her. Specifically, she wants to move to move to quarters on the port side of the Enterprise, as her starboard-side room has the stars going 'the wrong way'.

Scott Bakula played Captain Jonathan Archer, while Jolene Blalock was Sub-Commander T'Pol.
3. Lieutenant Reed and Ensign Mayweather are working to calibrate the targeting sensors, but the simulations are not successful. Captain Archer agrees to stop to allow them some target practice. What do they shoot at?

Answer: Asteroids

Lieutenant Reed only gets to fire two torpedoes in his practice session. The first one misses the (rather large) asteroid entirely, then detonates at a safe distance. The second torpedo, however, clips the edge of the asteroid and turns to head straight back towards the Enterprise. Reed manages to detonate it, albeit uncomfortably close to the ship.

After the near miss, Reed estimates that it will take upwards around 24 hours to effect the adjustments needed.

Lieutenant Malcolm Reed was played by Dominic Keating, while Ensign Travis Mayweather was played by Anthony Montgomery.
4. A little further along their trajectory, the Enterprise sensors pick up a damaged ship in deep space, three light years away from the nearest star system. Does anyone respond to their hails?

Answer: No

Itching to make first contact, and without any set protocols to follow, Captain Archer ignores T'Pol's recommendations to leave the ship alone (after receiving no response to their hails). First, he conducts a scan of the ship's interior, and when the results are inconclusive, he decides to take a shuttle over to board the vessel.
5. A team of three crew members goes over to the alien ship in the shuttle. Of these, who did not go on the away mission?

Answer: Commander Tucker

Commander Tucker begs the Captain to be included on the away team, but Archer insists that Tucker is needed on the Enterprise. As the weapons specialist (Tactical Officer), Lieutenant Reed comes along in case of a hostile encounter, while Ensign Sato is needed to potentially communicate with whomever might be aboard.
6. What kind of atmosphere did the away team find on the alien ship?

Answer: Nitrogen-methane

Upon entering the ship they find it dark and with minimal power. Their scans don't tell them much more than the type of atmosphere, but the lack of any life signs is not promising. Soon enough, they find 15 crew dead and hanging from hooks with some kind of pump harvesting fluids from their bodies.
7. After returning from the alien ship, Sub-Commander T'Pol argues that there is no further reason to stay, and recommends that the Enterprise continue on its course. Does Captain Archer give the order to carry on?

Answer: Yes

Captain Archer is obviously conflicted about the decision to continue on their mission. Leaving behind the ship with the murdered aliens on it without doing anything about it bothers him. Over dinner with T'Pol and Tucker, he asks them what they would have done if it had been a ship of Vulcans or of humans.

Realizing that he had let T'Pol's 'logic' sway his compassionate judgment, Archer orders Ensign Mayweather to reverse course and return to the alien ship.
8. Hoshi manages to set a distress call from the alien ship, hoping that it will draw others from the same species to find it. It does, but not before another ship arrives - the one that had disabled it in the first place. What happens next?

Answer: The 'new' alien ship attacks the Enterprise.

The new, hostile ship ignores any attempts to communicate from the Enterprise, and attacks as soon as it is in range, disabling the port nacelle. The Enterprise tries to return fire, but the two torpedo attempts are ineffective. The first torpedo detonates against the enemy's shielding, and the second one is destroyed by a beam weapon.

The hostiles scan the Enterprise and proceed to attach themselves to the hull. Seeing what they had done to the bodies on the other ship, Dr. Phlox surmises that the hostiles plan to do the same to the humans on the Enterprise.
9. The Enterprise destroys the hostile alien ship.

Answer: False

After Ensign Sato manages to communicate with the 'friendly' aliens and convince their captain that the humans were not the ones who had killed their kin, the rescuing aliens fire on the hostiles, forcing them to detach from the Enterprise.

Lieutenant Reed manages to get the targeting sensors working correctly (after their initial attempts failed) and he fires of an accurate shot that causes some damage to the hostile ship. The more effective firepower of the 'friendly' alien ship, however, is what destroys the hostile.
10. What is the name of the species with which the crew of the Enterprise makes first contact?

Answer: Axanar

The Axanar are a long-lived species, averaging a 400-year lifespan. When the away teams were on the Axanar ship, they observed that the Axanar had green blood (it was spattered on the walls) and that their zymuth gland produces a substance called triglobulin, valued for its medicinal and aphrodisiac properties.

It was for this that the hostile aliens had attacked the Axanar ship - they were harvesting the triglobulin.
