Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Sleeping Dogs" opens with the armory officer Lieutenant Reed training another officer on the phase pistol. Which one?

Answer: Ensign Hoshi Sato

Malcolm is training Hoshi with the new phase pistol, specifically working on her accuracy. When firing the older model EM-33, one needed to compensate for particle drift, which is not longer required with the new pistols.

Despite achieving a less than 50% accuracy, they decide to postpone further training when they feel the Enterprise drop out of warp - something that shouldn't be happening for days.

Lieutenant Reed was played by Dominic Keating, while Linda Park played the part of Ensign Sato.
2. Captain Archer decides to divert from their current heading to investigate a class 9 gas giant. Upon sending a probe into the atmosphere, what does it 'hear'?

Answer: Siren calls

The images from the probe are distorted, which Ensign Sato attributes to electromagnetic interference. Sub-Commander T'Pol adds that such EM interference often produces unique wave forms.

When Captain Archer asks to hear them, Ensign Mayweather proclaims them to be 'siren calls' - something that he heard often as a child travelling on a space freighter. His father would put the sounds on the ship's speakers whenever they passed gas giants.

Captain Archer was played by Scott Bakula, Ensign Mayweather was played by Anthony Montgomery, and the role of Sub-Commander T'Pol was acted by Jolene Blalock.
3. A damaged ship with biosigns is discovered sinking into the gas giant's lower atmosphere, and an away team is sent over in a shuttlepod to give aid to the survivors. Who does NOT join the away team?

Answer: Ensign Mayweather

Before joining the away team, Ensign Sato visits Captain Archer to ask to join the team - something that she has been previously reluctant to do. Archer agrees, noting that she has definitely developed her 'space legs' in the past few months. He also says that T'Pol specifically requested Ensign Sato for this mission, due to her linguistic skills.

Those skills are found immediately useful when she is able to recognize markings that show the vessel to be of Klingon origin.
4. The damaged ship turns out to be a Klingon vessel. How many crew members are found to be conscious by the away team?

Answer: One

Despite Vulcan knowledge of Klingons as a species, Sub-Commander T'Pol didn't recognize the configuration of the starship as being Klingon before boarding it.

The away team finds three unconscious Klingons on the bridge, plus their scanners indicate at least another nine biosigns on board. Evidence shows that they succumbed to a carbon dioxide-based neurotoxin.

One female Klingon crew member was still conscious when the away team boarded; she assaults Reed and escapes the ship in the team's shuttlepod.
5. The away team is trapped on the Klingon ship, sinking down into the gas giant's atmosphere. What type of weapons system do they discover while searching the display panels for information?

Answer: Photon torpedoes

While photon torpedoes are in common use by the time of "Star Trek: The Original Series" (approximately 110 years later), they have not been 'discovered' yet by humans in 2151. Lieutenant Reed comments that he has never heard of such a weapon, and is very intrigued.
6. A search through the Vulcan database reveals that the Klingon ship is what class of starship?

Answer: Raptor-class scout vessel

With the Klingon ship sinking fast, Captain Archer needs to know how much pressure it can withstand in the gas giant's atmosphere. Discovering that the Raptor-class scout ship has a coherent molecular alloy-reinforced hull gives Commander Tucker an idea on how to reinforce a shuttlepod to reach the ship and rescue the away team.

Commander Charles "Trip" Tucker III was played by Connor Trinneer.
7. What live animals are discovered in the Klingon ship's galley when the away team members go looking for water?

Answer: Targs

Hoshi and T'Pol go to the galley to find water for the dehydrated Malcolm (working hard trying to repair the ship) and Hoshi is amazed and disgusted at everything they find there (while T'Pol is nonchalant about it all). When a noise attracts their attention, they open a door to discover a number of chained up Targs (very aggressive dog-like creatures with huge fangs). T'Pol comments that Klingons like their meat freshly killed.
8. What does the away team do to slow down their descent into the gas giant?

Answer: Detonates torpedoes

The first couple of detonations of the photon torpedoes has little effect on slowing their descent. After firing off two at once (closer to the ship), they are able to briefly gain a measly 200 metres of altitude.

In spite of the risk of exacerbating the effects of the pressure on the hull, the away team members agree to detonate the remaining six torpedoes at a distance of only 500 metres from the ship. They survive the blast and get enough altitude to allow Captain Archer (and his Klingon guest) to reach them in the reinforced shuttlepod.
9. What is the name of the Klingon officer who completes the repairs to the Klingon ship?

Answer: Bu'kaH

Officer Bu'kaH stranded the away team (earlier in the episode), stealing the shuttlepod and radioing for help in fighting the humans who (she claims) attacked them. She is grappled and brought onboard the Enterprise, where she is captured and subdued.

In the sickbay, Dr. Phlox determines that the neurotoxin that incapacitated the Klingons came from Xarantine ale. Bu'kaH admits that they raided a Xarantine outpost, and amongst the spoils was a quantity of ale, which the crew consumed in their victory celebration.

Captain Archer gets Bu'kaH to help them by appealing to the Klingon sense of honour... would she really let her crew die such a dishonourable death (by refusing to help the humans) when she could save them?

John Billingsley played the part of Dr. Phlox, while Officer Bu'kaH was played by Michelle Bonilla.
10. After being saved by the crew of the Enterprise NX-01, the Klingon captain expresses his thanks before departing.

Answer: False

Not only does the Klingon captain neglect to acknowledge the efforts of the Enterprise crew, he complains that their boarding of the IKS Somraw was a violation, and then he demands that Captain Archer surrender and prepare to be boarded.

Captain Archer calmly calls the Klingon captain's bluff, and in turn threatens to blast them away if they fire even one shot at the Enterprise. The fact that the Raptor-class scout ship is fresh out of photon torpedoes is a big help in Captain Archer's posturing.

Vaughn Armstrong played the part of the Klingon captain.
