Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ensign Mayweather opens this episode by complaining to Ensign Sato about the choice of movie the previous evening. What was played?

Answer: Night of the Killer Androids

They both commiserate over the poor choice of movie, and Lt. Reed also joins in on the conversation. It is noted that there are more than 50,000 movies in the database to choose from, and surely *something* better could have been picked.

Ensign Travis Mayweather was played by Anthony Montgomery, Ensign Hoshi Sato was portrayed by Linda Park, and Lt. Malcolm Reed was played by Dominic Keating.
2. What spatial phenomenon draws the interest of the Enterprise crew?

Answer: A stellar nursery

A stellar nursery is a nebula wherein a number of stars are in the process of being created. Not only did the incredible sight draw the attention of the Enterprise crew, but there also happened to be a number of spaceships in the vicinity, piquing the curiosity of Captain Archer.

Scott Bakula played the role of Capt. Jonathan Archer.
3. The Enterprise encounters a number of spaceships within the spatial phenomenon, and one responds to their hails. It turns out to be a transport ship carrying a group of Borothans on a pilgrimage. What have they come to witness?

Answer: The Great Plume of Agosoria

According to the beliefs of the pilgrims, this stellar nursery is where the universe began. The Plume of Agosoria is a neutron blast from a protostar that happens every 11 years. What perfect timing that the Enterprise could be there to witness it!
4. While giving the pilgrims a tour of the Enterprise, one of them seemingly commits an act of sabotage, disconnecting an antimatter junction. What does this result in?

Answer: It saves the ship from an antimatter cascade.

While hosting the pilgrims, the ship encounters a plasma storm. The Enterprise (along with the transport ship) maneuvers around the edge of the storm, but it still manages to catch them. A blast from a plasma bolt causes power outages throughout the ship, and more critically, an antimatter cascade. Amazingly, the cascade stops on its own, instead of blowing the ship to smithereens.

After investigating, Commander Tucker discovers that someone had disconnected the antimatter junction; the seeming act of sabotage that actually saved the ship from destruction.

Commander Charles Tucker III (Trip) was played by Connor Trinneer.
5. Which Enterprise crew member accompanies the pilgrims back to their ship to experience their religious rituals?

Answer: Dr. Phlox

Following the excitement of the near-catastrophe, Dr. Phlox accompanies a number of the pilgrims back to their transport vessel (some also stay behind). Dr. Phlox demonstrates a keen interest in the religion of the pilgrims, participating in their preparation rituals (unseen in the episode), and returning with the ability to speak the rite when the Plume happens.

Phlox mentions to Capt. Archer that during a visit to Earth that lasted many months, he had the opportunity to participate in a variety of Earth's religions.

Dr. Phlox was portrayed by John Billingsley.
6. What is the name of the Enterprise crewman who turns out to be an operative from the future fighting a Temporal Cold War?

Answer: Crewman Daniels

Crewman Daniels is seen early in the episode when he takes the place of the crewman who usually acts as Capt. Archer's steward.

After the near catastrophe, Daniels reveals himself to Capt. Archer. Taking the captain to his quarters, Daniels shows him a device called a 'Temporal Observatory', which is supposedly his people's way of policing the timeline and preventing other groups with time travel capabilities from changing it. He claims to be from approximately 900 years in the future (the 31st century).

He also reveals to Capt. Archer that Silik (the Suliban that Archer fought during the events of the two-part "Broken Bow" storyline) was the one who disconnected the antimatter junction and that he was here to capture him (Daniels). Daniels wants Archer's help in finding Silik in order to learn who (from the future) is directing the Suliban's actions.

Crewman Daniels was played by Matt Winston, while John Fleck portrayed Silik.
7. Which Enterprise crew member is 'brought into the loop' about the time operative, yet expresses disbelief in his story, saying that time travel is impossible?

Answer: Sub-Commander T'Pol

Sub-Commander T'Pol is highly skeptical of Agent Daniels' story, citing extensive study by the Vulcan Science Institute that found no basis for the possibility of time travel. Commander Tucker argues the opposite position, and Daniels' obvious technical knowledge (he ties his equipment into the ship's systems in an effort to locate Silik) and advanced tools seem to support Tucker's opinion.

Sub-Commander T'Pol was played by Jolene Blalock.
8. The time operative uses a futuristic device that lends credence to his story. With it, he is able to walk through walls.

Answer: True

While T'Pol and Trip argue over the validity of Daniels' story, he proceeds to don a glove-like device that enables him to phase through solid materials. He uses it to repair the J37 power relay, which has gone offline.
9. The Suliban agent (Silik) vaporizes the time operative and steals his 'Temporal Observatory' device. Captain Archer tracks him down to Launch Bay Two and they fight. What is the outcome?

Answer: Silik opens the Launch Bay door and escapes to a waiting Suliban ship.

Before Daniels can use the sensors to locate Silik, he shows up in Captain Archer's quarters and tries to convince the captain that Daniels is not what he seems. Silik's actions, however, show that he is not a 'good guy' as he shoots Archer and then makes his way to Engineering, where he vaporizes Agent Daniels.

Archer uses the phasing device to track Silik through the ship's bulkheads to Launch Bay Two, and they fight. Archer doesn't manage to kill or capture Silik, but he *does* manage to shoot and destroy the Temporal Observatory before Silik can escape with it. After Silik opens the Launch Bay door and jumps out (to the waiting Suliban ship), Archer manages to lose the phasing device while trying to prevent also being sucked out of the ship.
10. "Cold Front" was directed by another "Star Trek" actor. You may remember him from the helm of the USS Voyager. Who is he?

Answer: Robert Duncan McNeill

Robert Duncan McNeill played Lt. Tom Paris on "Star Trek: Voyager", although that was not his first appearance in a "Star Trek" show. He also played the role of Starfleet Academy cadet Nick Locarno in the 1992 episode "The First Duty". He turned his hand to directing on "Voyager" in 1996 with the third season episode "Sacred Ground".
