Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Shadows of P'Jem" opens on Earth with Vulcan Ambassador Soval confronting Admiral Forrest regarding the recent destruction of the monastery (and spy station) P'Jem at the hands of the Andorians. Since it was Captain Archer who revealed the existence of the spy station to the Andorians in the first place, what does Ambassador Soval do?

Answer: Suspend joint Earth-Vulcan fleet operations

What does the suspension of joint Earth-Vulcan fleet operations mean for the Enterprise? It means that a ship is dispatched by the Vulcans to retrieve Sub-Commander T'Pol. And this 'transfer' won't be a promotion, either, given that she allowed - even aided - Captain Archer in revealing the existence of the spy station at P'Jem to the Andorians.

Ambassador Soval and Admiral Forrest were played by Gary Graham and Vaughn Armstrong, respectively.

Scott Bakula played the role of Captain Jonathan Archer, while Jolene Blalock was Sub-Commander T'Pol.
2. What planet of three billion inhabitants does Captain Archer decide to visit after finding reference to it in the Vulcan database?

Answer: Coridan

While sitting down to dinner, Captain Archer describes the planet to his chief engineer, Commander Tucker. He then proceeds to tell Trip that he only plans on taking Ensign Sato to make contact, citing the Chancellor's request to limit the number of people that he brings down until they get to know the humans better. When Archer begins teasing Trip about being unable to see the renowned starship technology of the Coridans (as fast as Warp 7?), Tucker realizes that the captain is pulling his leg about leaving him behind.

Barbara Tarbuck played Coridan Chancellor Kalev.

Commander Charles "Trip" Tucker III was played by Connor Trinneer and the part of Ensign Hoshi Sato was acted by Linda Park.
3. After receiving news about P'Jem and that a Vulcan ship would be coming to collect T'Pol, Captain Archer decides to visit the planet with just T'Pol. What happens during their descent?

Answer: They are shot down

As they are on approach to the Coridan capital city, a fixed-wing aircraft approaches and fires on them, demanding that they reduce speed and change their heading. Captain Archer attempts evasive maneuvers and tries to return fire, but to no avail as they are shot down.

It turns out that there are radical factions on Coridan that believe that their government is being propped up by the Vulcans, a fact that Archer (and Tucker on the Enterprise) wish they had been informed of before approaching the capital.
4. On the planet, Archer and T'Pol find themselves bound and locked in a darkened room. When their captors interrogate them, what position does T'Pol say that Archer holds on the Enterprise?

Answer: Steward

The rebel leader Traeg is surprised to find that one of his captives is a Vulcan, and he assumes that she must be in command, since he's never known a Vulcan to take orders from anyone. T'Pol and Archer don't disabuse him of his assumption.

Traeg demands to know about their phase pistols, and then he asks Archer about the capabilities of the humans' starship. Archer responds with, "Our protein resequencer can make chicken sandwiches." T'Pol uses this to claim that Archer is merely the ship's steward and that they were coming to Coridan to prepare a banquet for the chancellor.

Traeg was played by Jeff Kober.
5. What does Lieutenant Reed detect on the planet's surface that indicates a possible location of Archer and T'Pol?

Answer: A ditanium signature

With the exceedingly large population, the Enterprise's scanners are unable to pick out a single Vulcan or Human biosign, and with the systems on the shuttlepod shut down, it also proves nigh impossible to find. What Lt. Reed does detect is the material ditanium, a metal composite in the shuttlepod's hull.

Although not 100% certain, Reed is sure that the signature must be the shuttlepod, and they begin to plan a rescue mission.
6. At this most inopportune time, the Vulcans arrive to take Sub-Commander T'Pol back to the Vulcan High Command. What is the name of the Vulcan captain and his ship?

Answer: Sopek, captain of the Ni'Var

Sopek is the senior Vulcan officer in the Coridan sector, and as such was tasked with transferring T'Pol off of the Enterprise and take her back to Vulcan. As with other Vulcans starship captains encountered by the Enterprise to date, Sopek comes across as arrogant and peremptory. Learning of Archer and T'Pol's abduction, he summarily takes over the investigation.

Commander Tucker decides that Sopek doesn't need to know about the possible discovery of the shuttlepod's location, deciding to take care of things without their 'help'.

Captain Sopek was played by Gregory Itzen.
7. The radicals contact the Enterprise and demand a ransom for the safe return of T'Pol and Archer. What do they want?

Answer: 40 phase pistols

Hoshi is unable to trace the rebels' signal, but they do learn of the ruse by Archer and T'Pol to disguise their identities when Traeg refers to his captives as "your captain and your steward", and when Trip demands to speak to the captain, Traeg replies, "I'm sure you wouldn't want any harm to come to her. We'll rely on your full compliance."

But even if they wanted to comply with the demands, Lieutenant Reed notes that they only have eleven more phase pistols on the ship.
8. Tucker and Reed go to the planet surface and begin searching the area where they believe Archer and T'Pol are secured. Before they get too far, they are apprehended... by whom?

Answer: Andorian commandos

Commander Shran and his subordinate Tholos, both previously met at P'Jem in "The Andorian Incident", capture Tucker and Reed. They admit that they are on Coridan to foment trouble between the rebels and the Vulcan-supported Coridan government, all as part of their ongoing campaign against the Vulcans. Even so, Shran admits that he owes Captain Archer a debt, and he agrees to help rescue the captives.

And it just so happens that he has an operative within the ranks of the rebels who is able to help from the inside, including getting a communication device to Captain Archer.

Commander Shran was played by Jeffrey Combs, while the part of Tholos was played by Steven Dennis.
9. The assault on the rebel compound is successful, with Humans, Andorians and Vulcans all involved. As the proverbial dust is settling, the rebel leader gets a shot off at the Vulcan captain. Who leaps in the way to save his life?

Answer: T'Pol

The Andorians work together with Tucker and Reed to save Archer and T'Pol, but just as they are in the middle of their assault on the compound, a Vulcan commando team led by Captain Sopek arrives to complicate things. Even with the rescue complete, the tensions between the Vulcans and the Andorians almost sets off a new firefight.

It is at that moment that Traeg tries to shoot Sopek, with T'Pol leaping in the way of the plasma bullet.
10. With the rescue complete, the Vulcans depart, taking Sub-Commander T'Pol with them to face the Vulan High Command.

Answer: False

Captain Sopek tries to demand that T'Pol be taken aboard the Ni'Var for medical attention, but Archer insists that Dr. Phlox tend to her, as she is an Enterprise crew member. After treating her, Phlox tells Captain Sopek that her injuries are much too extensive for her to be moved at this time.

Captain Archer convinces Sopek to return to the Vulcan High Command without T'Pol, and furthermore to advocate on her behalf, given how she saved his life.

After the Vulcans leave, Phlox revives T'Pol, who is not actually as badly injured as he had claimed. Given the option to go with the Vulcans, T'Pol chooses to remain on the Enterprise.
