Although characters in the show call him many different names in the show such as "Dracula man" or magician his official title is necromancer. He has the ability to communicate with spirits from beyond the grave. He often uses his powers to help Dr. Venture and his family when they are in trouble.

He is usually just referred to as Orpheus or Dr. O but his first name is Byron. He mentions his first name in the episode "Eeney, Meeney, Miney... Magic!" and he also mentions it again when he has to testify in The Monarch's trial in the episode "Trial of The Monarch".

Triana is always seen wearing gothic clothing. Despite her father being a necromancer, she did not inherit any type of magical powers and lives her life like any normal teenager. Even though Dr. Orpheus is completely oblivious to what a teenager goes through, the two of them do get along well. Dr. Orpheus is a single father, his wife left her for a younger necromancer.

Dr. Venture only lets Orpheus and his daughter stay if they pay rent which they do. Venture is not very neighborly; he never offers any kind of help even though Orpheus does frequently.

He has one grey cat named Simba. Cats in general do like Dr. Orpheus. In the episode "I Know Why the Caged Bird Kills" all of Myra Brandish's cats approached Orpheus and started to purr. Dr. Orpheus then cheerfully says "they smell my cat!"

Orpheus never speaks to Venture casually enough to call him by his first name, Thaddeus, or his nickname, Rusty. It is unknown as to why Orpheus calls him Mr. Venture instead of Dr. Venture.

Orpheus says he received his doctorate from a "higher power" which would be his master who lives in the Necropolis. Orpheus gets there by going inside his daughter's closet; she has been too scared to actually go in there herself. The Order of the Triad was formed sixteen years prior to the introduction of The Alchemist and Jefferson Twilight in the episode "Fallen Arches". Dr. Orpheus received a video tape from the Guild of Calamitous Intent that says he had been approved for an arch enemy. Orpheus finally had a reason to bring back the Order of the Triad. Both The Alchemist and Jefferson Twilight were excited about this and the triad had been formed again after sixteen years of inactivity.

The Order of the Triad saw many villains that day but could not find the perfect arch enemy until they met Torrid. He was picked because he kidnapped Triana Orpheus.

Dana Snyder, best known for his voice as Master Shake in the cartoon "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" (2000), provides the voice of The Alchemist. Charles Parnell provides the voice of Jefferson Twilight. Brendon Small, creator of both "Home Movies" (1999) and "Metalocalypse" (2006), provides the voice of Sergeant Hatred in the season two finale "Showdown at Cremation Creek Part I". Sergeant Hatred is shown in many season three episodes however, Brendon Small did not provide the voice. "The Venture Brothers" creator Jackson Publick provides the voice for the season three episodes of Sergeant Hatred.
