Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode opens with the super-villainous Monarch storming a high-rise building. For once, the leotard-wearing lepidopteron's henchmen pull off a crack entrance, taking the occupants completely by surprise and totally seizing control of the facility. What resource has the Monarch conquered in this effort?

Answer: His accountant's office - the henchmen had confused its address with the top secret Venture compound

Having utterly wasted his 'best entrance ever', the Monarch consoles himself in that he can at least have a Quicktime of his "minty-fresh" entrance on his webpage by the next day.
2. After the opening credits sequence, Dr. T. S. Venture pays a visit to the mystical maestro Dr. Orpheus. Having just returned from Japan, Dr. Venture has brought something that he feels might interest the transcendent sorcerer supreme. What is it?

Answer: An Oni - a Japanese demon that has attached itself to Dr. Venture for some unknown reason

So far, Orpheus is the only person besides Venture to be able to see the Oni. Orpheus attempts a demon extraction, but succeeds only in angering the Oni. The Oni drags Venture around the room like Linda Blair in 'The Exorcist', albeit without the feminine charm.
3. Meanwhile, back at the Monarch's cocoon, the goateed scoundrel of the winged insect world is brainstorming new strategies to eliminate the embarrassing pratfalls that characterize his exploits. Initially, he delegates this task to his trusty (and zaftig) henchman #21, who comes up with the idea of using figure skates as deadly slashing weapons. This upgrade in weaponry, however, is forestalled by the arrival of a mysterious advisor and his retinue of blackguard troops. Who is this man who would be mentor to the Monarch?

Answer: Dr. Henry Killinger

An intriguing combination of Henry Kissinger, Mary Poppins, and Dr. Strangelove, Dr. Killinger offers his services as strategist to the Monarch's organization. The butterfly of badmen gratefully accepts - a decision his top henchmen will regret as Killinger comes to dominate the organization.
4. For protesting the new strategist's methods, Henchman #24 is sentenced to the Monarch's Chamber of 1,000 torments - though that sentence is then belayed by the strategist himself. In an effort to free his friend, what ploy does Henchman #21 use to get past the blackguards?

Answer: He needs to give #24 his medication - in a rather intimate manner

Initially, the blackguards demur, volunteering to administer the medication themselves. However, when #21 explains that the medication must be given in suppository form, the blackguards reconsider and let him pass. To #21's chagrin, #24 has become fond of Killinger, comparing him to Mr. Belvedere - even though, in #21's opinion, 'he knows nothing of honor or living by the sword'.
5. Finding that Hank and Dean have been kidnapped, the Ventures' nigh-superhuman bodyguard sets off to rescue them, with robot HELPER in tow. Uncharacteristically, Brock ends up in an argument with the incomprehensible android about the merits of Led Zeppelin, whom the mulletted warrior loves dearly. What is HELPER's main gripe with Led Zep?

Answer: Their music is 'jock rock'

In the band's defense, Brock asserts that Zeppelin's music is about love and longing - and also, he sheepishly admits, Hobbits, though this is 'a metaphor'. HELPER seems unmoved. It is revealed later that he prefers Maya Angelou when he recites a long portion of her poetry in 'HELPER-speak'.

The more erudite among you will note that Angelou's text 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' is the source for this episode's title.
6. As Brock finds out in a harsh physical way, the Venture Brothers have been abducted by their 'mother', Myra. Which of these pop culture sources does the seemingly deranged Myra quote when explaining her plight to the boys?

Answer: All of these

Dean protests that Myra is not their mother - 'You just can't be!'

'On account of the crazy,' adds Hank.

Myra retorts: 'Search your feelings, boys, you know it to be true, so true. Funny, how it seems, always in time, but never in line for dreams. I've bought a ticket to the world, but now I've come back again!' She also paraphrases both Jesus and the prophet Isaiah: 'Rusty! Why have you forsaken me?'
7. How did Myra and Dr. Venture meet (according to Myra)?

Answer: She was his bodyguard before Brock

As Myra laments, she forgot the prime rules of being a bodyguard: 'Never let your guard down, never let them out of your sight, never fall in love.' Of course, since this is a verbatim quote from the poster to the Kevin Costner/Whitney Houston film 'The Bodyguard', it is debatable how much of what she says is fact and how much is manic-phase bipolar delusion. Still, she does have the martial skills that an OSI operative would possess, though this could be, as Brock claims, from her days as PowerKat on a "physical challenge" show from the 1980s that funtrivia.com has been legally enjoined from mentioning by name. (I am NOT making this up, folks!)
8. Distressed over the new strategist's Svengali-like control over the Monarch, Henchman #21 finally calls in the big guns for help. Who accompanies him to storm the cocoon?

Answer: Dr. Girlfriend

Dr. Girlfriend proves to be very martially adept, taking out a half-dozen Monarch henchmen and blackguards single-handedly. Henchman #21 contributes little to this cause, claiming to be more a 'weapons man'. This after attacking Dr. Killinger with silly string and attempting arguably the worst example of hypnosis in television history.
9. Unwittingly, Doctors Orpheus and Venture have also been on the trail of Hank and Dean, though their search has been led by the mystical force they have been investigating. In the denouement of the story, Myra neutralizes Dr. Orpheus (with both martial arts and the love of her numerous cats) and restrains Dr. Venture, only to be subdued by Brock with a crushing bodypress whose placid grace defies description in prose. To whom does Myra compare herself afterwards?

Answer: Catherine the Great

The legend of Catherine the Great was referred to earlier in the episode as Dr. Orpheus contacted his 'master', who played out the specious history of the Empress' death by being crushed as an allegory. This demonstration launched the Doctors on a vision quest of sorts, though it would prove rather unenlightening due to Dr. Venture's homophobic response to Dr. Orpheus' refined manner.

Incidentally, that story about Catherine the Great? Not true. Trust me on this one.
10. A surprising epilogue to this story links two unlikely antagonists with an unlikely common goal. Who were these two characters and what was their aim?

Answer: Dr. Killinger and the Oni, trying to bring The Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend - as well as Dr. Venture and Myra - back together

It is unclear whether or not Venture and Myra ever had more than a one-night-stand in the very car to which the Oni was so strongly attracted, but Dr. Venture does admit that they were intimate for a time, though in far from delicate terms. Both Brock and Venture downplay Myra's importance, but never explicitly deny that she is the boys' mother. Will the two couples ever reunite? Only time will tell.

As always, I'd love to hear any comments you might have, especially those that will make this a better quiz. Thanks for playing.
