Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The series begins in the year 2001 with Jess's father, Rafael, stealing an Aztec relic. In what type of building does he find the relic?

Answer: Church

The first episode explains that there were three relics, one each for the Aztec, Maya and Inca civilizations that were lost. These relics contain clues as to the location of Montezuma's treasure. A man named Rafael is shown dressed up as a nun in a church and he finds/steals the Aztec relic from it. Tragically, Rafael is presumed dead after his house burns down when the men attack him. Luckily his wife, Manuela, and his daughter, Jess, are able to escape.
2. The next scene takes place in Baton Rouge, LA, in 2022. What type of escape room are Jess and her friends in?

Answer: Prison Break

Jess, Tasha, Ethan and Oren are in an escape room set up as if they are prisoners. They eventually get out of their cells by tying a blanket around a screwdriver and swinging it to open the doors. Jess then solves a numeric puzzle to enter on a digital pad to escape.

The group is elated that they are the first ones to beat the Prison Break escape room only to be disqualified because Oren was on his cell phone at the end.
3. Jess is upset because she thinks she has lost her mom's special recipe for a certain dish. What is this dish that comes from the Spanish word for 'breaded'?

Answer: Empandas

Jess searches all over their apartment for her mother's recipe for empanadas but can't find it. Her mom died the year before and told Jess to never lose the recipe. Luckily, her friend Ethan had the recipe and he brings it back to her. Empanadas are delicious fried or baked turnovers that can be filled with cheese, corn, tomato, meat or other ingredients.
4. At what location does Jess work where she gains access to items owned by someone under the alias Iam Phasma?

Answer: Almighty Storage

Jess works at Almighty Storage and she tells her boss that she wants a raise and to be promoted to assistant manager. He tells her if she can collect the unpaid rent of the storage unit owned by 'Iam Phasma' then she has a deal. Jess realizes that the name is simply an alias meaning 'I'm a ghost' and she goes through the belongings in the unit to find clues about the owner.
5. What item does Jess bring to Peter Sadusky that makes him engage in conversation with her?

Answer: Burial flag

The burial flag was located in Peter's storage unit at Almighty Storage where Jess works. Jess tracked down Peter through researching his connections with the Freemasons, having a deceased military family member and him likely living near Baton Rouge.

When Jess puts the burial flag given to Peter in recognition of the military service of his deceased son, Jack, he starts to take Jess seriously and eventually they talk about clues leading to treasure.
6. A few times in the episode Jess comments that she wants to work for the FBI but does not qualify. What is holding her back from applying to the FBI?

Answer: She is not a U.S. citizen.

Jess Valenzuela was born in Mexico and moved to the United States when she was a child. Her residency status is undocumented and she is a 'dreamer' who is trying to obtain legal status through DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). She comments to several people that it is strange that U.S. citizenship is required to work for the FBI and it bothers her that Texas used to be a part of Mexico and people born there are citizens of the USA from birth.
7. After Jess gets a letter from Peter Sadusky she is confronted by fake FBI agents and then her place is raided. How did Jess know these individuals were not real FBI agents?

Answer: Their badges were signed by the President of the United States.

Jess tells her friend Tasha that the individuals that questioned her about Peter Sadusky were not real FBI agents because their badges were signed by the President of the United States. She explains that FBI agents have their badges signed by the Attorney General, not the President. Tasha is amazed and tells Jess that she recognizes details that pretty much everyone else would miss.
8. Jess figures out that the Masonic Lodge of which Peter Sadusky was a member likely holds clues to find the treasure. How does she get the man at the door to let her in?

Answer: Doing a secret handshake

At first Jess tries to tell the man at the door of the Masonic Lodge that she is the cleaning crew and he knows she's lying and tries to close the door. Just before he is able to do so Jess puts her hand in the secret handshake position that she had seen in the picture that Peter Sadusky gave to her.

After she is inside Jess is able to find the Aztec relic that had symbols that matched the ones on her necklace.
9. What is the name of the man who is shown in a prison in Mexico City at the end of the episode and who was mentioned as being double crossed by Rafael, Jess's father?

Answer: Salazar

In the beginning of the episode when Rafael takes the Aztec relic from the church in Mexico City, two of Salazar's men attack him. They tell Rafael that no one turns their back on Salazar and that Rafael double crossing him will have consequences. The end of the episode takes place 21 years later and Salazar is shown in a prison cell with hundreds of drawings on his wall and another prisoner telling him that he wants to be involved in his escape plan.
10. A ruthless treasure hunter named Billie ominously calls Jess and demands that she give her the Aztec relic. What actress who was born in Wales plays the part of Billie?

Answer: Catherine Zeta-Jones

Catherine Zeta-Jones was born in Swansea, Wales in 1969. She has had a stellar career as an actress starring in films like "The Mask of Zorro" (1998), "Entrapment" (1999) and "Chicago" (2002). Zeta-Jones married the actor Michael Douglas in 2000 and when she won an Academy Award for "Chicago" a few years later the couple became just the second married couple living at the time to have both won acting Academy Awards (Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were the others).

In the pilot episode of "National Treasure: Edge of History", Zeta-Jones plays the role of Billie who tells Jess that if she doesn't hand over the obsidian Aztec artifact she will kill her friend Oren.
