In fact, when the fifteen designers met with Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn for champagne in Bryant Park at the commencement of the competition, they were informed that their materials would be thousands of dollars of fabrics supplied by Mood; all they needed to do was rush over, get what they wanted, and make a garment that they felt fit their personality and vision as a designer. Rami Kashou ended up taking the first victory of the season by creating a draped outfit for his model, showing technical flair. Simone LeBlanc became the first eliminated designer when she failed to show anything original.

In week two the designers were surprised to meet with Sarah Jessica Parker who arrived to inform them that they would be working in teams of two to design affordable outfits for her 'Bitten' line which would need to be made on $15 or less but sell for $40. Victorya Hong's simple design was deemed simplistic and versatile and she ended up winning (with partner Kevin Christiana).

Her outfit was added to the line. Marion Lee's outfit, which looked more like a burlap sack, ended up getting him eliminated.

His partner, Steven Rosengard, was spared.

In week three, the designers were thrown a curveball when they were told to create an outfit to be worn on-air by "Today Show" sportscaster Tiki Barber based on his recommendations. Having never done menswear before, many contestants struggled and some did not finish. Carmen Webber, who neither finished nor made a working outfit, was ousted. The next week, the designers worked in groups of three to design outfits with selected fashion faux pas.

The winning team combined overalls, 1970s flares, and poodle skirts effectively to make a modern design while the losing team failed to unite shoulder pads, baggy sweaters, and dancewear. Chris March, the team leader, allegedly did not bring shoulder pads to the present day.

He was sent home for his decisions.

In week five, the designers met with temporary, new models, all women who, over the past year, had lost significant amounts of weight. They were then tasked with redesigning that woman's favourite past outfit, reconstructing it for their new looks. During the task, contestant Jack Mackenroth withdrew for health reasons stemming from tests needed to treat MRSA.

As a result, the previously eliminated contestant, Chris March, was re-added to the competition. When the designers hit the runway, Steven Rosengard was eliminated for utterly mutilating his client's wedding dress, barely incorporating it into his final design.

In week six, the designers took a field trip to the Times Square Hershey Store to begin their next task, collecting as much as they could in five minutes and creating an outfit out of it in a single day. While most of the designers took inedible merchandise, Jillian Lewis used Twizzlers to make a design.

She was, however, beaten by Rami Kashou, whose elegant, stylish skirt wowed the judges. The eccentric Elisa Jimenez went home. The following week, the designers were told to make prom dresses for clients from a local high school, creating the gown of their dreams while infusing their own style into it. Victorya Hong won this challenge by making her design personal for both herself and the client while Kevin Christiana went home for doing the opposite, actually aging his teenage model according to the judges.

In week eight, the designers split into four teams of two to create avant-garde looks for their models to suit their unique hairstyles. They were given two days and $300 to do so. Midway through the challenge, Tim Gunn informed them that they would need to create a second look to accompany the first, only more modern and cost-effective (at $50).

Although this threw a wrench into most designers' schedules, Christian Siriano and Chris March excited the judges with both an edgy haute couture garment and a chic accompanying design. Kit Pistol was deemed 'out'. The next week, the designers were sent to a New Jersey warehouse to collect their fabrics, several washes of denim and white cotton with which they would need to reconstruct and create a new outfit. Ricky Lizalde had the best design while Victorya Hong was eliminated.

Heading to the runway in week ten, the final six met with Tim Gunn and six WWE Divas, each of whom needed a new, spandex outfit to match their wrestling personalities. Ultimately, Chris March's design got the top billing, partially because of his strong portfolio in costume design and the outlandish nature of the challenge.

Although Sweet P's outfit was considered gaudy and unnecessarily bad (even by herself), Ricky Lizalde, who won in the previous week, went from first to worst. He was the one who was out.

Heading to the Met, the final five designers were each given a digital camera and led by Tim Gunn through several exhibits in a little over half an hour. They were then told to take any inspiration they wanted and use that image to create a garment. On the runway, Christian Siriano won for emulating "Don Andrés de Andrade y la Cal"; he was granted access to the Bryant Park show. Likewise, Jillian Lewis was given the go-ahead for her outfit based on "The Story of the Argonauts".

This week, Sweet P went home in fifth place.

In week eleven, the designers were told that two would be eliminated and only three would go to Fashion Week. Despite this, they landed in a deadlock between Rami and Chris, opting to have them both design twelve-piece collections for the Bryant Park Fashion Week in New York City. Before the show, however, they would return to the runway at Parsons for a judging ceremony and only one would actually get the chance to exhibit the collection at the final show.

The judges ultimately decided that Rami would advance to the finals, eliminating Chris.

With five months and $8,000 after the competition, the final four were sent out to create their lines for the Bryant Park Fashion Show. After Chris March's elimination, three designers took to the runway. Jillian Lewis' collection 15th century-inspired collection slotted her into third place overall while Rami Kashou's Joan of Arc-themed outfits netted him second place.

In the end it was the young fashion prodigy, Christian Siriano, who won the season's grand prize for his couture collection. He was rewarded with $100,000, a fashion spread in "Elle" magazine for himself and his model, a Saturn Astra, and a deal with online fashion distributor Bluefly.

After the show, Siriano became a major success, selling millions of dollars-worth of garments in the fashion industry and perpetuating a brand.
