Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The designers received a package at home the week before the show began, which contained the materials they needed to create their garment for the first challenge. What was in the box?

Answer: Muslin

In addition to the six yards of unbleached cotton fabric, each designer received $20 for whatever other supplies they might need. Heidi and John were both eliminated, as their designs were judged to be "too simple".
2. Ah, the trickery of the producers! The contestants were lured to a festive evening of drinking and dancing, never realizing that the next challenge had begun. What were the designers asked to use to create garment number two?

Answer: The clothes they were wearing

Some of the designers wore their favorite items to this fabulous party, and were forced to disassemble them to compete in this challenge - ouch! Chloe's win was made more impressive by the fact that she was wearing only a very short dress to the party - luckily, she was allowed to use her overcoat, too.
3. During the runway interrogation for the second challenge, one designer had an emotional meltdown involving an incomprehensible rant, wild tears, and maniacal laughter. Who freaked out and embarrassed the judges?

Answer: Andrae

Andrae was trying to explain that the clothes he ripped apart were from his recently failed shop, and represented the end of his old life and the beginning of this new one. Though why he couldn't have just SAID that is beyond me. The rant went over eight minutes before editing.
4. Challenge three entailed designing an outfit for one of fashion's icons. What famous fashionista was to be considered for this garment?

Answer: Barbie

Not only did each designer have to create an outfit for the "My Scene Barbie", they were asked halfway through the challenge to replicate their garment for the DOLL, as well! Nick, the winner of this challenge, also won the right to have his outfit produced and sold with a special edition (impossible to find) Barbie doll.
5. Kara had an accident and fell behind the others as they were leaving the fashion icon field trip. She almost missed the excursion to get supplies for the challenge, which would have spelled disaster. What had happened to her?

Answer: She lost something in the escalator

In the most ridiculous scene ever, Kara almost self-destructs when she loses her Barbie doll's hat in the escalator. It takes a team of store employees half an hour to free the toy; meanwhile, Kara missed all of the sketch time and almost disqualified herself from the challenge.
6. Lingerie was the project for the fourth challenge; four teams of three designers were to execute a themed collection for the runway. Which was NOT the name of a collection created for this challenge?

Answer: Hidden

The missing fourth collection was Santino's concept - "Heidi's Homeland" - a Black Forest theme that strayed too far into costumery for the judges' taste.
7. Episode five brought the challenge to design a red-carpet look for a socialite. Who is this famous woman?

Answer: Nicky Hilton

Santino won this challenge with his grey asymmetrical-hem gown. Nicky chose his dress to wear on the red carpet, and the judges particularly loved the braided bodice.
8. The designers were given a photo of the socialite in challenge 5 to assist them in their endeavors. Marla's gown was almost a complete knockoff of the dress in the photo. What famous designer was the socialite wearing?

Answer: Chloe

Tim Gunn repeatedly tried to save Marla from making this kind of mistake, but she insisted on going forward with her plans. Even Nicky Hilton commented that Marla's dress looked just like a Chloe dress she had just worn recently to an event! Luckily for Marla, the judges found Guadeloupe's dress too hideous to ignore, and SHE got the boot instead.
9. Challenge six was to create what kind of look for the Banana Republic customer?

Answer: Day into evening

There was an additional incentive - the winning garment was to be put into production and sold at Banana Republic stores. Andrae and Daniel took this one with their drop-waisted dress under a small cropped jacket.
10. Challenge six also required the designers to test their strength at another facet of the fashion industry. What additional challenge was given to the designers after the garments had been produced?

Answer: Visual Merchandising

The Banana Republic customers were asked to vote that day for the best window display. Emmett was amazing, sketching the day-to-evening theme in paint in under sixty minutes. Nick and Santino completely failed this part of the challenge, simply writing "Banana Republic Art Gallery" on brown paper (embarassing to watch).
