Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The host of the show is a famous supermodel. What is her name?

Answer: Heidi Klum

Tyra Banks IS the host of a model-related fashion show - "America's Next Top Model." Liz Hurley actually hosts the British version of "Project Runway", which is called "Project Catwalk".
2. During the first challenge, the designers were told to create a garment for judging with components bought at a grocery store. Which of these materials was not used by one of the designers?

Answer: Plastic wrap

Designer Austin Scarlett gained the prize in this challenge with his woven cornhusk dress - despite the fact that, left out overnight, the husks dried and separated from each other! Yikes! Luckily, the judges saw the merit in his design and gave him the win.
3. The second episode involved using a simple fabric to express a complex emotion. What mood were the designers challenged to evoke with this garment?

Answer: Envy

This challenge resulted in a wide range of results - from Starr having to explain a "tumor" on her dress (?) to Jay's "Come to Jesus" submission. Vanessa actually designed a maternity dress, which went over far better than anyone expected it to.
4. The winner of the Banana Republic challenge earned the right to have their garment produced and sold to the public. Though not the winner, Jay's dress was amazing. What building inspired his creation?

Answer: The Chrysler Building

His dress was a marvel of craftsmanship and sheer beauty; unfortunately, it was seen as too complex for mass production. Wendy Pepper won instead with a (what many said) bland, staid dress with a capelet.
5. Kara tried to help Wendy, who had been the target of the judges' disdain throughout most of the challenges. What did Kara do to try and reverse Wendy's fortunes?

Answer: Gave her a makeover

This makeover gave Wendy the confidence to triumph in the Banana Republic challenge. As we saw later in the season, Kara had reason to regret her kindness!
6. What famous line is uttered as each failed contestant leaves the runway for the last time?

Answer: Auf Wiedersehen

Hard to spell, so easy to say - each designer receives Heidi's German goodbye and a kiss on each cheek just before they take the walk of shame.
7. The fourth project was a team challenge - design a garment for rocker Sarah Hudson (relative of Kate). Which designer had a meltdown during the execution of this challenge?

Answer: Nora

Already on the edge after working under Kevin's lackluster leadership, Nora reached the breaking point after a pattern piece went missing. She accused everyone of stealing it before it was eventually found, merely misplaced. PS: Has anyone ever heard from that "rocker" Ms. Hudson since this show?
8. What did Vanessa do during the runway interrogation that led to her dismissal?

Answer: Admitted she couldn't sew

Everyone was asked to name the least valuable member of their teams. Vanessa voted for herself since she said she couldn't sew - the judges took the easy out and gave Vanessa her walking papers.
9. The fifth episode involved making a garment for their new "clients" - their own models! What were the designers to produce for the runway?

Answer: Wedding dresses

Nora's model, who was only sixteen at the time, demanded roses and a poofy dress - Nora couldn't bring enough of her own style to the project, and was eliminated. Several of the models brought their boyfriends by to see the dresses - can you say HINT?
10. The next challenge took a social turn - each model was to wear their garment out to an "Elle" magazine party. Schmoozing and self-promotion were the name of the game on this one - the winner was the one who appeared afterwards as the subject of a famous gossip column. Who won this challenge?

Answer: Austin

The designers were asked to create swimsuits that could be worn both in the pool and out on the town. Austin's very young model (16) was an expert networker, charming her way into the reporter's article and taking Austin along with her. The swimsuit was gorgeous, and inspired by pool goddess Esther Williams.
