Ty Olsson played Benny, a vampire who formed an alliance with Dean in Purgatory. Shown in flashbacks starting with "We Need to Talk About Kevin", the vampire helped Dean survive and led him to the way out, in exchange for Dean carrying his soul back to earth. Once back on earth, though, Benny had difficulty fitting in, shown in "Blood Brother" and "Citizen Fang".

In "Taxi Driver", the vampire allowed Dean to kill him in order to return to Purgatory and lead Sam out the same way he led Dean out.

However, Benny ended up staying behind after leading Sam to the door.

Crowley's ultimatum and killings occurred in "Clip Show". He first killed Tommy Collins, played by Graham Wardle, who the brothers saved in season 1's "Wendigo". He next killed Jenny Klein, played by Cindy Busby, who the brothers saved in season 7's "Shut Up, Dr. Phil". And, third, he killed Sarah Blake, played by Taylor Cole, who the brothers saved in season 1's "Provenance". Nico McEown played Lucas Barr in season 1's "Dead in the Water".

He was not included in "Clip Show".

Gil McKinney played Henry Winchester, John's father and Sam and Dean's grandfather. Henry was a Man of Letters, a secret society of scholars that recorded information about evil and how to stop it. The Winchesters were part of these elite scholars, and the brothers' maternal family, the Campbells, were elite hunters.

The brothers discovered all this when Henry appeared in their hotel room through a time portal, looking for their father in "As Time Goes By". After he died, they also realized this was why John never knew about this legacy, but thought his biological father had abandoned him.

Not knowing about the Men of Letters, John had become a hunter after hs wife was killed. Sam told his brother he understood why the angels had worked to get their parents together - combining the brains and the brawn, so their children would be elite in both skills.

Answer: Jared Padalecki

Jared Padalecki played Sam Winchester. While his brother Dean wanted to take on the trials, it was Sam that performed the first one while saving his brother from a hellhound in "Trial and Error" and therefore needed to complete the others. While performing the trials, Sam became very ill, but told his brother the trials were purifying him.

As a baby, Sam had been fed demon blood by Azazel. Since he spent months during the trials coughing up blood, many fans speculated that the "purifying" Sam referred to was a purging of the demon blood from his body.

He did not complete the final trial, since Dean discovered it would kill his brother, so stopped him just in time. However, Sam remained very ill as the season ended in "Sacrifice".

Answer: Amanda Tapping

Amanda Tapping played Naomi. She controlled Castiel's actions and thoughts for much of season 8, forcing him to lie to the Winchesters and kill Samandriel after the Winchesters rescued the angel in "Torn and Frayed". She also tried to brainwash Castiel to kill Dean, but when Castiel was about to do so, Dean was able to reach him by reminding him all that they had been through and that they were family. Castiel then started remembering Naomi and told Dean what she had done.

He then touched the angel tablet, which broke his connection to Naomi completely.

In "Sacrifice", Naomi told Dean that the final trial would kill Sam, and told Castiel she would listen if he wanted to return to heaven. However, she was killed by Metatron shortly thereafter.

Answer: DJ Qualls

DJ Qualls played Garth, a rather unconventional hunter who was a friend and ally of the Winchesters. Garth protected Kevin on his houseboat, checked in on people at the request of the Winchesters, and kept track of the hunter network that Bobby had handled before his death. Garth worked with the Winchesters in "Southern Comfort", assisting them in finding the penny and stopping the spectre, while also trying to help the brothers get past their issues.

Answer: Mark Sheppard

Mark Sheppard played Crowley. Crowley spent the season attempting to consolidate his power as the King of Hell, including trying to beat the Winchesters to the tablets and to the prophet. In "What's Up, Tiger Mommy?" Crowley possessed Linda Tran in order to steal the demon tablet. And, in "The Great Escapist", Crowley temporarily took Castiel prisoner, and ripped the tablet out of the angel's body, where he had hidden it.

Answer: Tyler Johnston

Tyler Johnston played Samandriel. The angel first appeared in "What's Up, Tiger Mommy?" when he attempted bid on the demon tablet. He was later kidnapped and tortured by Crowley in "A Little Slice of Kevin", and he revealed the names of the prophets. Castiel and the Winchesters rescued him in "Torn and Frayed", but Castiel then killed the angel at the direction of Naomi.

Answer: Jensen Ackles

Jensen Ackles played Dean Winchester. He and the vampire Benny fought together in Purgatory and became friends. They then escaped together. In "Taxi Driver", Sam was performing the second trial to close the Gates of Hell and he was trapped in Purgatry. Dean asked his friend to let him kill him, so Benny could go back to Purgatory and rescue Dean's brother. Benny agreed. Dean beheaded Benny, killing him and sending him back to Purgatory.

The plan was for Sam to carry Benny out the same way Dean had done, but once Benny had led Sam to the door, several vampires showed up, and he decided to remain in Purgatory and hold them off so Sam could escape.

Curtis Armstrong played Metatron, the angel who memorialized God's word on the tablets. The brothers found him in "The Great Escapist" and Metatron rescued Kevin from Crowley. Metatron then sought out Castiel in "Clip Show" and tricked him into helping with the elements for a spell to expel all the angels from heaven. Metatron performed the last part of the spell in "Sacrifice", stealing Castiel's grace and sending him to earth with no powers.

Answer: Misha Collins

Misha Collins played Castiel. In "Clip Show", Metatron tricked Castiel into believing that they were performing trials to close the gates of heaven. The first trial was to kill a nephilim, a creature that is half human and half angel. When Castiel made a move to attack the nephilim, who appeared to be a harmless young waitress, she attacked them back. Castiel killed her, saving Metatron.

It was not until "Sacrifice" that Castiel realized he had not been performing trials, but was instead helping Metatron with a spell to expel all the angels from heaven, sending them to earth. Metatron cut out Castiel's grace, making him human, as the last part of the spell. Castiel was then sent to earth without hs powers, just in time to watch all his angel brothers and sisters falling.

Answer: Felicia Day

Felicia Day played Charlie, the computer genius and fan of LARPing, "Lord of the Rings", and video games. The brothers met up with her in "Larp and the Real Girl", where she was LARPing as the Queen of Moons, and where players were being killed by a fairy controlled by another player.

She also joined the Winchesters in "Pac Man Fever" when she brought them a case in which a djinn was killing people.

Answer: Rachel Miner

Rachel Miner played Meg, a demon who had been both enemy and uneasy ally to the brothers over the years. In "Goodbye Stranger", Castiel and the brothers rescued Meg from Crowley's demons. The King of Hell had tortured her for a year, trying to get her to reveal the locations of Lucifer's crypts.

She revealed the location of one that held the angel tablet to the brothers and Castiel. Castiel and Dean dscovered the tablet, but Crowley showed up. Meg sent Sam to help his brother and Castiel while she dealt with Crowley. Castiel took off with the tablet, and as the brothers drove off, it appeared that Crowley killed Meg.

Answer: Osric Chau

Osric Chau played Kevin Tran. After rescuing Kevin from Crowley in "A Little Slice of Kevin", Sam and Dean hid the young prophet on Garth's boat to protect him while he translated the demon tablet. The boat was warded against demons, but not angels.

Unfortunately, one of Naomi's angels was working for Crowley, and he revealed Kevin's location to the King of Hell. Crowley kidnapped Kevin again in "Taxi Driver", setting up an elaborate copy of the boat, to try to get the demon tablet from him. Kevin figured out that the demons posing as Sam and Dean were not the real Winchesters, though, and did not reveal the tablet to Crowley.

As Crowley was killing the boy in "The Great Escapist", the brothers got Metatron to rescue him.

Answer: Alaina Huffman

Alaina Huffman played Abaddon, a Knight of Hell, that possessed Josie, and followed Henry Winchester through a time portal from 1958 into 2013 in "As Time Goes By". Abaddon killed most of the Men of Letters, before Henry escaped, and then killed Henry in 2013, as Henry and Dean worked to rescue Sam.

In the process, the three Winchesters trapped the demon, and neutralized her by cutting her up and burying her in cement. The brothers later dug her up and reassembled the body in an attempt to complete the third demon trial in "Clip Show".

The demon escaped and Sam burned Josie's body to force the demon to leave during "Sacrifice".
