Castiel, Sam and Dean rescued the angel from Crowley and Viggo, who were totruring the angel. Naomi directed Castiel to rescue Samandriel, but made him think it was his own idea. Then, once Castiel had gotten the angel out, she directed him to kill the angel. Castiel did so.

He also followed her instructions to tell the Winchesters that Samandriel was compromised and he had killed him in self defense. Sam and Dean knew something was wrong, though.

Answer: The littlest angel

Castiel popped in on Dean while he was asleep on the couch at Rufus' cabin, waking him up and leading Dean to remind the angel that it is creepy when he watches people sleep. When Castiel told Dean he needed help rescuing Samandriel, Dean did not know who that was, at first.

Then he remembered the angel who was dressed in a wiener hut fast food uniform when they met during "What's Up, Tiger Mommy?". Dean then asked, "The wiener on a stick kid?" Castiel confirmed his identity. Dean then asked, "So who snatched heaven's most adorable angel?" He also called the angel "Alfie", since that was the name sewn on the fast food uniform.

Answer: Fizzles' Folly

Dean and Castiel went to Garth's boat to speak to Kevin during "Torn and Frayed". "Fizzles' Folly" was clearly visible on the boat. This was not the first time "Fizzles" was associated with Garth. In "Party On, Garth", Garth used a sock puppet to speak to a traumatized child. Much to Dean's exasperation, he called the puppet "Mr. Fizzles".

Answer: Taggert and Rosewood

The brothers introduced themselves as agents Taggert and Rosewood. While they often used rock music icons for their aliases, this time they used the names of the two officers from "Beverly Hills Cop", a movie starring Eddie Murphy, released in 1984. This episode also marked the first time that they were caught with fake FBI badges. After showing the badges to a LARPer, the player pointed out that the ID numbers should have had ten digits with two letters mixed in, and that the seals were from the previous month. The brothers quietly pocketed the badges.

LARP stood for Live Action Role Play. This was the third time the brothers encountered the term. The first time was during "The Monster at the End of this Book" when they were mistaken for LARPers. The second time was during "The Real Ghostbusters", when the "Supernatural" convention participants were all LARPing, pretending to be Sam and Dean.

Answer: My handmaiden

Charlie panicked and called Dean her handmaiden. Boltar the Furious, otherwise known as Gerry, continued to refer to Dean as a handmaiden later in the episode when he and Dean searched for the missing Charlie. Gerry turned out to be the killer, having used magic to capture a fairy and force her to kill for him.

Answer: John Winchester's father

Henry Winchester was John's father. He time travelled from 1958 to 2013, appearing in Sam and Dean's hotel room, in "As Time Goes By". He was followed through time by Abaddon, a demon from Hell.

Henry Winchester was appalled to hear the brothers were hunters, who he considered to be "apes". He explained that the Winchesters had always been "men of letters", and Sam and Dean were "legacies". He further explained that men of letters were chroniclers of all that man does not understand, and they shared those findings with a few elite, trusted hunters. Dean had learned that his Campbell ancestors were hunters in "In the Beginning" during season 4, and the Winchester brothers spent time hunting with Campbells during part of season 6.

Answer: H.G. Wells

Dean called Henry H. G. Wells. Wells wrote "The Time Machine". Henry used his own version of a time machine, a blood sigil, to travel through time to his next of kin in "As Time Goes By".

Answer: The bat cave

Using the coordinates and key they obtained in "As Time Goes By", the brothers found the secret location left by the Men of Letters in Lebanon, Kansas. The opulent and extravagant nerve center contained an extensive library of knowledge about the supernatural, as gathered by the Men of Letters. Viewing it for the first time, Dean said, "Sammy, I think we found the bat cave." "The bat cave" is a reference to the hidden nerve center used by Batman in the comic books, television show, and movies.

Answer: "I have something stuck to my shoe"

Sam told Dean that he had "something stuck to my shoe" and Dean knew that meant he was being followed. Dean then told Sam that he had thought he was being followed too, but it "turned out to be a gay thing." That was because when Dean confronted Aaron for following him, Aaron pretended he was gay and pursuing Dean. Dean became flustered and made an exit.

He later discovered Aaron had been following him about the case, and it was not "a gay thing." Dean's embarrassment, and later disappointment to learn he had not been hit on after all, was charming throughout.

Answer: oh no

Sam raised the issue of how they would stop the Golem. The Golem was a giant man made of clay that was owned by a rabbi and protected the Jewish people. This particular Golem had destroyed some members of the Thule Society, Nazi necromancers during World War II, and was left to Aaron after his rabbi grandfather was killed by the Thule in 2013. Dean's response to Sam was a shout out to "Saturday Night Live". "SNL" had a recurring sketch where a clay figure named Mr. Bill would get crushed. Each time it happened, the audience would hear, "Oh no!"

Kevin told Sam and Dean that a person would have to complete each trial, and after each one, say an Enochian spell. He told them the first trial was to kill a hellhound and bathe in its blood.

When Dean was told about the trial, he said, "I got no problem icing some devil dog and letting Calgon take me away." When Kevin asked where he would find one, Dean replied that since the hellhounds come for those who made a crossroad pact, "All we gotta do is find some loser who signed away his special sauce ten years ago, get between him and Clifford, the big dead dog." Later, when Sam asked Dean what the plan would be if they found the person targeted by a hellhound, Dean replied, "You get him clear, I spike Fido, the crowd goes wild." He used a few other terms for the hellhounds, as well, including "Huckleberry Hound" and "Land Shark".

Answer: "J.R. and the Gang" and "The Beverly Hillbillies" only

When Sam explained that he thought the farming family had made a demon deal since they struck oil where there was not supposed to be any oil and got rich, Dean replied, "Let's go visit the Beverly Hillbillies." He later told Sam not to let "J.R. and gang out of your sight."

In "Trial and Error", Dean insisted he would complete the trials. He made a heartbreaking speech, asserting that each time the brothers had attempted something like this, one of them ended up dead or worse, and since he expected to die fighting and Sam could see a future, he would rather his brother have a future.

However, the hellhound clawed Dean, and Sam killed the hound and saved his brother. He then told his brother that he had faith in Dean, that he was the best hunter (even better than their father), and Dean had plenty to live for, including friends and family.

He told him that he would get his brother to a future too if he would have faith in him. Sam then read the spell and completed the first trial.
