Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Pac-Man Fever", how did Dean find himself in 1951?

Answer: He was in Charlie's dream

After Charlie was poisoned by the djinn, the brothers could not bring her back. To save her life, Dean took dream root and entered her dream to help her come back before the poison killed her. This was the third time the brothers used dream root. They used it in "Dream a Little Dream of Me" to enter Bobby's dream and save him. Sam then used it to enter Dean's dream and stop the killer in the same episode.
2. What happened that caused Dean to tell Sam, "That's why we don't have nice things, Sam" in "Pac-Man Fever"?

Answer: Sam failed to catch the beer Dean threw to him

Suffering from the effects of the trials, Sam slept a whole day. Entering the library of the bunker with serious "bed head," his brother teased him saying, "give me five minutes with some clippers." He then tossed Sam a beer, but Sam was unable to catch it, and it smashed when it hit the floor. Clearly worried about his brother, Dean tried to make a joke of it, saying, "That's why we don't have nice things, Sam."
3. In "Pac-Man Fever", what research source led the Winchesters to determine that they were hunting a djinn?

Answer: John's journal

The information about the different strain of djinn was in John Winchester's journal. This djinn fed on people that were frightened. The poison from this strain of djinn would send the victim into a nightmare state, rather than the dream state Dean experienced in "What Is and What Should Never Be," and would liquefy the victim's insides, killing them.

In researching the blue handprint that was on the victim, Sam went through MOL books, Charlie used her app, and Dean searched John's journal. Dean found the answer first, in his father's journal.
4. In "The Great Escapist", how did Kevin determine that the Sam and Dean he was dealing with were imposters?

Answer: Sam and Dean were too polite

Crowley scrubbed Kevin's mind and put him on a "set" exactly like Garth's boat, and then had two demons play the parts of Sam and Dean, in an effort to get Kevin's half of the demon tablet and to have Kevin decipher his half. While Kevin sprayed the "Winchesters" with his water guns, it had no effect since Crowley replaced the holy water with regular water.

However, Kevin began to get suspicious when the brothers did not use the secret knock. Then, as Crowley pointed out, fake Sam was talking like Dean. Kevin then tested them by asking them to bring him several kinds of food from town.

When the brothers did so, even though there were still burritos in the refrigerator, he knew it could not be them. When he told Crowley how he had figured it out, Crowley asked, "My demons were too polite?" Kevin confirmed that it was the thing that convinced him that they could not be the real Sam and Dean.
5. Sam referred to the hotel manager in "The Great Escapist" as "Dr. Scowly Scowl," and said he was "like a villain from ______" what?

Answer: Scooby Doo

When Dean said he was going to check out the Two Rivers Tribal Museum and Trading Post, Sam said he was going to follow the hotel manager. Dean suggested he rest instead. Sam did so for a bit, but then followed the manager, and saw him leaving books for someone. This led the brothers to find the scribe of God.
6. The brothers encountered the scribe of God in "The Great Escapist". What was the name of the scribe?

Answer: Metatron

In "The Great Escapist", the brothers tracked down Metatron after Sam remembered the symbol he used on the tablet from a Native American art class. Metatron explained that he had hidden out from the angels for so long, just reading books. Sam and Dean told him what had happened, and after hearing about Kevin, Metatron saved Kevin from Crowley just as Crowley was killing the young prophet.
7. What was the third trial to close the gates of Hell?

Answer: Curing a demon

At the end of "The Great Escapist", the brothers were told by Kevin and Metatron that the third trial required that they cure a demon. They did not know what that meant, but were committed to the task. Crowley ended up being the demon the brothers attempted to cure during "Sacrifice".
8. In "The Great Escapist", the scribe of God told Dean that "mankind's storytelling was the ______" what?

Answer: true flower of free will

Metatron told the brothers that he was an average angel who worked in the secretarial pool before God chose him as his scribe. Further, he said, "when you create stories, you become Gods of tiny, intricate dimensions unto themselves." He also told Dean that he should consider what it would take to close the gates, and what the world would be after it was done.

This was the first allusion to possible unintended consequences of closing the gates of Hell, even though the brothers and Kevin had been working on it all season.
9. In "Clip Show", Castiel attempted to make amends with Dean by shopping for him. What did he seek to purchase from the market because he knew Dean liked it?

Answer: All of these

Dean planned to go on a supply run, but he and Sam got a lead on the third trial and left to follow it. Angry with Castiel for not trusting Dean and stealing and losing the angel tablet, Dean refused to let Castiel join them. He told him to stay behind and get better (since Castiel was still not recovered from the injuries inflicted by Crowley and Naomi). Castiel decided to do the shopping for them, and clearly worked to select items he knew Dean liked, including the girlie magazine, beer, and pie - although the store was out of pie. Metatron then appeared in the store and Cas joined him. Once again, Dean did not get his pie, a long-running joke for the series.
10. In "Clip Show", with what did Father Max Thompson inject the demon?

Answer: His own purified blood

The priest injected the demon with his own purified blood. Sam told Dean that the blood was purified when the priest went to confession. After each time the priest injected him, he asked the demon how he felt killing the children. Eventually, the demon began to feel regret, and finally regained his humanity.
11. Crowley called Sam's cell phone during "Clip Show". What caller ID popped up on Sam's phone?

Answer: 666

666 popped up on Sam's phone in that episode. Crowley was calling to tell the brothers that he was killing people they had saved. In "The Great Escapist", Crowley received a call on his own cell phone. He answered the call with, "The King."
12. Castiel killed a nephilim in "Clip Show", and cut out a Cupid's bow in "Sacrifice". These two actions turned out to be what?

Answer: Part of a spell to cast angels out of heaven

In "Clip Show", Metatron told Castiel that he was giving him the trials to close the Gates of Heaven, so that the angels would stop fighting and Heaven would be fixed. Once Naomi caught up with Metatron and discovered his actual plan was to break Heaven, she tried to stop Castiel.

Unfortunately, Castiel did not believe her. By the time Castiel went to heaven to get answers, Metatron had killed her. Metatron admitted the first two items were part of a spell to cast the angels out of Heaven. He then took Castiel's grace, the third item needed for the spell, and cast him to earth.
13. In "Sacrifice", Castiel asked Dean, "Do you think it's wise to be drinking on the job?" What was Dean's reply?

Answer: "What show have you been watching?"

Dean's response could be taken as another way to ask Castiel if he has paid any attention for the past five years, since Dean has always drunk on the job. It can also be taken as a little meta fun, with a wink to the fans, acknowledging the series. The show went meta numerous times over its first eight seasons.

This was a small wink. The biggest meta episode was "The French Mistake" during season 6.
14. What did Abaddon say was the most shocking about time traveling through a closet and landing in the year 2013?

Answer: Somebody thought it was a good idea to make Crowley the king of Hell

The brothers had chopped up Abaddon, a Knight of Hell, and buried the parts in cement in "As Time Goes By". They dug her up and reassembled her in "Clip Show", intending to cure her for the third trial to close the gates of Hell. The Knight of Hell was appalled to hear that "the salesman" was the King of Hell.

She escaped and showed up at the church where Sam was attempting to cure Crowley during "Sacrifice". After flinging Sam through a window, she told Crowley this, and then said they were going to discuss "regime change." Before that could happen, Sam torched her body, and the demon escaped.
15. Why did Dean stop Sam from completing the third trial to close the gates of Hell?

Answer: It would have killed Sam

Naomi told Dean that she found out from probing Metatron's mind that the third trial would kill Sam - "the ultimate sacrifice." Dean asked Kevin to confirm. Kevin could not confirm, but he was not able to find Metatron's "trials" on the angel tablet. Dean had Castiel zap him back to Sam, and he stopped Sam from completing the trial at the last minute. Sam was willing to die to complete the trials, since he did not want to let his brother down. Dean convinced Sam to stop, telling him that Sam meant more to him than closing Hell.
