Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which U.S. state did teams depart on their race in this installation of the show?

Answer: Nevada

Phil began the first episode in the Nevadan desert sending eleven teams on their race around the world. As Phil dropped his hand and yelled 'Go', teams rushed to their luggage to discover that they'd be flying to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Once they arrived at this destination, teams needed to locate 'the big man located at Corcovado.' To get there, however, teams needed to reach the Las Vegas Airport, and take one of three pre-scheduled flights to Brazil. One of these, however, would give a distinct advantage, arriving a fair bit earlier than the other flights. Teams left their starting points with $200 for the first leg of the race.

The first flight leaving Las Vegas consisted of seven teams: Tara and Wil, Blake and Paige, Hope and Norm, Cyndi and Russell, Chris and Alex, Mary and Peach, and Shola and Doyin.

The final American Airlines flight contained the remaining four teams, and arrived in Rio de Janeiro approximately two hours later.
2. What is the name of the tree that teams had to kiss in the first leg of the race?

Answer: Fat Maria

Landing in Brazil, teams realized that they needed to visit the Christ statue on the top of Corcovado Mountain overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro. Driving up the mountain, then running up the steep stairways, Mary and Peach were the first to find their clue at the top.

This clue led told teams to make their way to Paqueta Island in order to kiss "Fat Maria"; both team members had to kiss "Maria" to claim their clue. Until they reached the area, teams were unaware of the fact that "Fat Maria" was actually a rather large tree. To reach Paqueta Island, teams needed to board a ferry to cross the nearby bay, then walk on foot to participate in the local custom of kissing "Fat Maria" for good luck. Cyndi and Russell, unknowingly taking a faster ferry, were the first to arrive, and getting directions from locals, they were quick to arrive at "Fat Maria" for their next clue, instructing them to find their reservations for Ilha Tours at the Lido Hotel. Once arriving at the hotel, teams would need to sign up for seats on boats leaving the following morning; first come, first serve.
3. Which team was not on the first boat to leave for the Ilha Tours in Leg 1?

Answer: Tara and Wil

Arriving at the Lido Hotel, many teams opted to save their money by sleeping on the beach while others purchased rooms. Regardless, it was an early start for all. The first boat departing from Paqueta Island carried the first three teams to arrive at the Lido Hotel, while the remaining four boats split teams up and left forty-five minutes, one after the other, in order to separate the teams.

These boats took teams back over the bay to Rio de Janeiro where teams would need to travel to Sugarloaf Mountain, take a gondola to the top, and find their clue overlooking the city. Boat #1 carried Shola and Doyin, Cyndi and Russell, and Blake and Paige, and it departed at 8:00am. When teams arrived at their next clue, they found the race's first Detour challenge. For this Detour, teams needed to choose either 'Mountain' or 'Beach', two prominent features in Rio de Janeiro's landscape.
4. Which Detour task of the first leg of the race was completed by the most teams?

Answer: Mountain

In 'Mountain', teams would head a short distance across Sugarloaf Mountain to their launching point for the challenge. In this task, teams had to take a 590-foot rappel down the side of Sugarloaf Mountain to receive their clue at the very bottom. Although the task would be a bit quicker, teams would have to push themselves physically and face any fear of heights.

In 'Beach', teams needed to take the gondola back down Sugarloaf Mountain, make their way to Impanema Beach, and use a sole picture to locate the woman who was the inspiration for the song "The Girl from Impanema".

Although this task was far less physical in a sense, teams would have to cover more ground in their search. Although many of the teams opted to complete the 'Mountain' task, 'Gutsy Grannies' Peggy and Claire instead decided to take their chances at the 'Beach' task.
5. Which team was first to be eliminated from "The Amazing Race 2"?

Answer: Deidre and Hillary

Following the Detour task, teams received their final clue for the first leg of the race, directing them to the first Pit Stop, the Tocorime Yacht situated in the bay, and visible from Urca Beach. Teams would need to first locate the correct ship, flying the red and yellow route marking flag, then find a boat to take them to the ship.

The final team to arrive would be eliminated. Arriving in first place was Tara and Wil who both excelled in the 'Mountain' task and were able to catch a quick ride to the yacht. Both of them won a trip to Hawaii for placing first. Following them were numerous teams, some of which hit the Pit Stop in groups in order to save money on their water taxis.

Despite the fact that they were the only ones to take the second Detour, Peggy and Claire narrowly beat out Deidre and Hillary who were ultimately the final team to step on the Pit Stop mat, thus becoming the first team eliminated from the race.
6. Throughout the course of Leg 2, did teams remain in Brazil?

Answer: Yes

Having arrived at the first Pit Stop on the Tocorime Yacht in the middle of the bay, teams departed twelve hours later in the middle of the night. Tara and Wil departed first and were the first to discover that they needed to make their way back to Urca Beach, take one of the waiting taxis, and travel to a specific samba club in Rio de Janeiro to obtain their next clue. Once they arrive at this location, they will need to match a feather contained within their clue information to a feather found on a dancer's headdress. That dancer will give them the info they need. Teams receiving this clue were directed to Sao Conrado Beach where Pedra Bonita would be waiting to give them their next cluebox.

This clue contained the race's second Detour task.
7. In the Detour task for Leg 2, teams chose between 'Freak Out' and what other task?

Answer: Seek Out

In 'Freak Out', teams needed to select an instructor and take a hanglider from the top of a nearby cliff back down to Sao Conrado Beach. This task, although quite unnerving, would be a faster choice for those who completed it. In 'Seek Out', teams needed to head to Sao Conrado Beach by taxi and use a metal detector along a 1.5 mile stretch of sandy beach to find their clue.

The task isn't scary, but time-consuming. Cyndi and Russell, Tara and Wil, Mary and Peach, Hope and Norm, Chris and Alex, Oswald and Danny, Peggy and Claire, and Blake and Paige all opted for 'Freak Out'. Gary and Dave initially attempted to complete the metal-detecting 'Seek Out' challenge, but both backed out and reverted to hanggliding, fearing that it would cost too much time. Completing the Detour, teams were instructed to travel from Rio de Janeiro to Foz do Iguacu, more than 900 miles away, by bus. Once at the bus terminal, teams would find their clue on a Jeep waiting outside.
8. Which team completed the Fast Forward task for the second Leg of the race?

Answer: Shola and Doyin

Although teams departed from the samba club with Route Info, they also left with the game's first Fast Forward clue, which would allow them to skip all tasks for that leg of the race and proceed directly to the Pit Stop. For this Fast Forward, participating teams would need to play a game of Volleyball at Copacabana Beach against a professional Brazilian couple.

Although the Brazilians had to play with out using their hands, the players could use any methods they wanted in order to score ten points to claim the clue. Peggy and Claire, Shola and Doyin, and Gary and Dave all arrived at the beach for a game of volleyball, but Peggy and Claire departed early, knowing that they could not compete against the pros. Shola and Doyin emerged from the game victorious and claimed their Fast Forward directing them to the second Pit Stop at a jungle camp near Iguacu Falls.
9. Which player did not participate in the Road Block task of Leg 2?

Answer: Blake

Arriving at Foz do Iguacu after a twenty-two hour bus ride, teams found their clues and cars and made their way to the Macuco Safari Dock in Iguacu National Forest. Once there, teams found the race's first Road Block task. In this Road Block, teams needed to choose one member who had keen eyes and a good sense of direction.

The selected member had to take a guided speedboat and a map upriver to Iguacu Falls, spot a red and yellow route maker, and take the marked path found there to their clue overlooking the river. Tara, Alex, Russell, Mary, Danny, Dave, Claire, Norm, and Paige completed this Road Block and returned the clues to their partner left waiting on the dock.
10. Which team was the second to be eliminated from the race?

Answer: Hope and Norm

When players returned to the dock, they discovered that they needed to head back to their cars and drive, then hike to a remote jungle camp nearby in order to arrive at the Pit Stop. The last team to check in would be eliminated from the race. Shola and Doyin, having claimed the Fast Forward, were first to arrive. Shortly after, Chris and Alex and Tara and Wil checked in as a group.

In the meantime, the remaining teams arrived and departed from the bus terminal in Foz do Iguacu, attempting to make up for lost time.

In the end, the final footrace came down to Hope and Norm and Blake and Paige. Ultimately, Blake and Paige barely snuck ahead, forcing the southern married couple to be the second team eliminated from "The Amazing Race".
