Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which African country did teams depart in the start of Leg 5?

Answer: Namibia

Having flown from South Africa to Namibia via charter flight in the beginning of Leg 4, teams departed from the Amani Lodge outside the capital city of Windhoek and flew to South Africa to catch a connecting flight to Bangkok, Thailand. Once in Bangkok, teams needed to take a variety of transportation methods to find their next clue. Beginning with a bus ride, teams had to find a SkyTrain station, then ride the monorail to the Erawan Shrine to find the Detour clue. Gary and Dave and Chris and Alex were both penalized at the Pit Stop for not following a clue regarding speed limits, but the airport equalized the teams.

Although all seven teams were not on the same flight to Johannesburg, all of them flew to Bangkok on the same plane.
2. In the Detour of Leg 5, the option 'Confusion Now' required that teams find which of these locations?

Answer: A bird market

Arriving at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, teams found the Detour clue for this leg of the race. The first option, 'Confusion Now', required that teams find a specific water taxi station and take a certain water taxi to a bird market somewhere in the city. Once teams reached their dock, signs would direct them straight to the bird market where they would need to release a cage of sparrows for good luck and obtain their clue. Tara and Wil, Chris and Alex, Mary and Peach, and Cyndi and Russell all participated in this Detour task, demonstrating a little less confusion throughout.

The other Detour task was entitled 'Confusion Later'.
3. In the 'Confusion Later' task of Leg 5, what item made of paper did teams need to purchase and burn?

Answer: A car

'Confusion Later', the second Detour choice for this leg of the race, was completed by Blake and Paige, Oswald and Danny, and Gary and Dave. In this task, teams needed to head to Bangkok's Chinatown center. Once there, they had to purchase a car from a specific shop (realizing that it was actually made of paper) and navigate the city streets to find the Wat Leng Nei Yi Shrine. Once there, teams had to burn the car as an offering to their ancestors. Ironically, more than one team had to purchase more than one car, having burnt the offering at locations that were nowhere near the temple. Once the Detour task was completed by all teams, they were instructed to go to Wat Khao Chong Phran Temple in Ratchaburi, Thailand for further instructions.
4. Which team member did not complete the Road Block task in Ratchaburi, Thailand in Leg 5?

Answer: Paige

Arriving in Ratchaburi on buses, teams made their way by taxi and/or tuk-tuk to Wat Khao Chong Phran Temple, a location known for its thousands of bats, and found their Road Block clue there. This Road Block required that participants don a flashlight and face mask, and enter a bat cave to find their next clue deep within.

In addition to the constant battering of bats, participants also had to brave the darkness, odor, and presence of large bugs. Chris, Dave, Blake, Peach, Wil, Oswald, and Cyndi all completed this task to receive their final clue. Taking their various modes of transportation, teams departed for the Pit Stop.
5. Which team was eliminated in Thailand in Leg 5?

Answer: Cyndi and Russell

Following the Road Block, teams were instructed to find a specific dock at Ban Plai Pong Pang and take a longboat to a house situated on the river. Once there, teams could check in at the fifth Pit Stop of the race. Being first to leave the Road Block task in Ratchaburi, Chris and Alex were first to arrive at the Pit Stop (this being their first time to do so).

They were closely followed by other teams who were much lower in standing previously in the leg as the sun set. Cyndi and Russell who, unfortunately, took too much time in finding their Detour option, were the last to arrive and became the fifth team to be eliminated from the race.
6. Beginning Leg 6, teams needed to find a vendor of which product?

Answer: Flowers

Departing from Plai Pong Pang, teams needed to head back to Bangkok, Thailand and make their way to a specific flower vendor at the Pak Kong Talad Flower Market. Departing in the early hours of the morning, teams first had to find the town of Ampawa, then take a taxi to Bangkok before they could search for their clue. Though teams were told a specific intersection, they needed to determine which, of hundreds of flower vendors, their clue would be at.

Although many teams had trouble with the task, Chris and Alex, who departed the earliest, found the clue first and were instructed to find the old bridge near Chiang Mai.

Here, they would find the next set of instructions. Regardless though, teams needed to travel by train for five hundred miles the entire way.
7. How many teams chose to complete the 'Beast' Detour task of Leg 6?

Answer: None

Arriving in Chiang Mai, teams made their way by hired van to the town of Mueng Kut to find the old bridge specified in the clue. Here, they found the Detour task for this leg of the race. This Detour consisted of the tasks 'Boat' and 'Beast'. 'Beast', which was inevitably chosen by none of the teams, consisted of riding an elephant down a riverside path to the next clue.

Although the task would be relatively simple, teams didn't attempt it because it would take up too much of their time and there would be little control over the speed of their 'vehicle'.

Instead, all six teams chose to complete 'Boat'.
8. Which team was the first to finish the 'Boat' Detour task of Leg 6?

Answer: Mary and Peach

In 'Boat', teams needed to choose a bamboo raft along the beach and navigate the river with a bamboo pole. After taking the one and a half mile track to the end, they would find their next clue waiting on a marked car. All six teams participating completed this task, and teams who easily mastered the skill of pushing the boat downstream made it much quicker than others. Mary and Peach, who began the boat race in second, pushed ahead of Gary and Dave after perfecting the maneuvering of the boat. Once at the end, their clue informed them that they needed to take their vans to Mae Ping Village to receive more info.
9. What did teams do at the Road Block in Thailand in Leg 6?

Answer: Clean elephants

Departing from the Detour, teams needed to drive off-road in Thailand. Once at Mae Ping Village, teams needed to find religiously-painted elephants and choose one member that enjoys getting wet. This member would then need to wash off their respective elephant, covered in colourful markings, to receive their next clue from their handlers. Mary, Gary, Oswald, Blake, Wil, and Chris all completed this task for the next Route Info which, in this case, told teams to drive directly to the race's sixth Pit Stop.
10. Which team arrived last at the Pit Stop in Leg 6?

Answer: None of these

Racing neck and neck to the Pit Stop, Mary and Peach narrowly beat out Gary and Dave for first place. In order to arrive at the sixth Pit Stop of the race, Karen Village, teams needed to take their vehicles to an enclosed destination and race on foot the rest of the way. Chris and Alex and Tara and Wil, realizing that the clue didn't specify an elimination point, soon realized that no one would be removed from the race in this leg and attempted to step on the Pit Stop mat at the same time. Because Wil stepped on earliest though, Chris and Alex were denoted the sixth place team and no one was eliminated.
