"West Wing" Chronology: Part 7 Quiz

For those not familiar with my 'chronology' series, the task is simple. We walk through each episode of a show and ask a question (sometimes 2) on each. This instalment deals with the start of season 4 (episodes 66-75).

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "West Wing" episode 66: "20 Hours in America (Part I)". How do some of the West Wing staff initially get stranded in Indiana?

Answer: The motorcade leaves without them

Josh, Toby and Donna are discussing the President's campaign rally in Indiana, and the motorcade suddenly takes off, obviously thinking they are already on board. This leads to a series of mix ups including their truck running out of diesel and them missing a flight because the county they are in doesn't recognise daylight savings time.
2. "West Wing" episode 67: "20 Hours in America (Part II)". Toby and Sam's conversation with a man in an Indiana hotel prompts them to come up with a way of making what cheaper for families?

Answer: College tuition

They meet a man called Matt, who is making sacrifices to afford college tuition for his daughter. They realise that if fees were tax deductible the system would be a lot fairer. At the end of the episode the trio of staff finally return home after 20 hours stranded in Indiana. They all go to work at the White House of course, despite the late hour.
3. "West Wing" episode 68: "College Kids". As the Qumari situation heats up, what do Leo and the President decide they need to do in this episode?

Answer: Talk to a lawyer

Leo brings in his lawyer, Jordon, to discuss the case. She is very concerned about being involved in such a confidential case, and is also not sure what to do because there is no international precedent for it.
4. "West Wing" episode 69: "The Red Mass". How many Presidential debates are agreed to be scheduled after negotiations between the two sides are completed?

Answer: 1

The Ritchie camp wants as few debates as possible in an obvious sign that they are concerned about Bartlet's public speaking skills. In what turns out to be a very clever move, the West Wing staff negotiate a different format of debate in exchange for only holding a single one. The staff agree they need to go offsite for some dedicated preparation.
5. "West Wing" episode 70: "Debate Camp". The debate camp takes place at Camp David.

Answer: False

The debate preparation is held over the course of a weekend at a conference centre in North Carolina. In an amusing exchange with Leo, the President says "I agreed to be locked up with you people for 48 hours. How much time do I have left?". Leo responds: "47 hours, 41 minutes".
6. "West Wing" episode 71: "Game On". Which piece of clothing does the President consider to be a lucky charm in his debates?

Answer: Tie

In a previous debate, Bartlet wore a tie he borrowed from Josh; however the staff have a problem because that tie had subsequently been destroyed at the dry cleaner's. Abbey Bartlet cuts her husband's tie with scissors just before he goes on stage, to give him an adrenaline rush for the start of the debate. Regardless of all these issues, Bartlet wins the debate hands-down, with Governor Ritchie going as far as saying "it's over" (meaning the election) to Bartlet straight afterwards.
7. "West Wing" episode 72: "Election Night". Bartlet wins the election comfortably, but does he also end up winning his home state of New Hampshire?

Answer: Yes

Much of the polling in the lead-up to the election showed the President was unlikely to win New Hampshire, which clearly upset him. However, he manages to pull off a close victory in the end. In another surprise, the dead candidate in the California 47th, Horton Wilde, also wins.

This creates a dilemma for Sam, who agreed to be the Democratic candidate in the follow-up election, thinking he would never have to go through with it.
8. "West Wing" episode 73: "Process Stories". While the President and First Lady are trying to have a romantic moment, they face several interruptions. Who does NOT contribute to this?

Answer: CJ

Leo arrives to tell the President about a coup developing in Venezuela. Toby has finally decided that this is the night to tell the President about his ex-wife being pregnant with twins (and that he is the father). Sam is dealing with the drama of being the presumptive nominee for the California 47th special election, which he tells the President he is trying to get out of, but later decides to go through with.
9. "West Wing" episode 74: "Swiss Diplomacy". A request for the US to perform an operation on an Iranian leader's son becomes complicated. Why?

Answer: The only available doctor is an Iranian refugee

The Swiss approach the White House to tell them that the Iranian Ayatollah's son, who is 15 years old, needs a heart-lung transplant. This is a rare and risky procedure, and there are only 3 people in the US who can perform it. Adding to this drama, 2 of them are not currently in the country. The remaining man, an Iranian, fears for his family in Iran should something go wrong.
10. "West Wing" episode 75: "Arctic Radar". What does Sam write in a note to Toby that convinces him to try out Will Bailey as a speechwriter?

Answer: "He's one of us"

Will Bailey, after refusing to run Sam's California campaign due to exhaustion, agrees to help out with the President's inaugural speech on his way to leave on a long-awaited holiday. In the end he decides to cancel his trip and join the staff full-time.
