Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who had sacked Debbie from her previous job at the White House?

Answer: Donald McKittridge

Donald McKittridge, Director of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, had fired Debbie for recommending Charlie to Josh. McKittridge had wanted the Presidential Aide job to go to David Dweck who was the son of a major contributor to his brother Mark, a Representative in the House.
2. What prestigious award did Israeli Foreign Minister Ben Yosef give to Leo?

Answer: Medal of David

As well as the Medal of David, Ben Yosef also gave Leo a yarmulke. Leo's meeting with Ben Yosef was mainly to discuss the fact that Qumari was about to blame Israel for downing the plane in which Qumari Foreign Minister Abdul Shareef was travelling. Ben Yosef agreed to take Leo's proposition (about holding off an Israeli attack on two Qumari terrorist camps) to his Prime Minister. Later it was learnt that Ben Yosef's plane was reported missing over Lebanon.
3. Where did Donna's predecessor tell her that there was a nuclear warhead?

Answer: Under Eisenhower's putting green

In a flashback to the Bartlet administration's first days at the White House, Donna's predecessor Jeff Johnson told her about the nuclear warhead. He then asked Donna if she would agree to be interviewed for a teen magazine by his girlfriend. When the interview appeared in the magazine, Josh laughed at Donna for being so naïve and not realising she was being set up with the story about the warhead. Donna got her own back by getting a friend to pretend to be from the NSA and Josh fell for it.
4. Who did Anthony, Charlie's protégé, bring to the White House?

Answer: Orlando Kettles

Anthony brought Orlando with him because he wanted Charlie to put in a good word for Orlando, who had been caught driving with a can of beer in his hand and banned from taking part in a football game. The most memorable scene was when Josh, rushing through a door, crashed into the very large Orlando and fell backward on to the floor. Charlie also took Orlando to vote for the first time and Orlando was so pleased he wanted to go back and vote again!
5. For which country did the Swiss Ambassador act as an intermediary on a life and death issue?

Answer: Iran

The Swiss Ambassador, von Rutte, approached Leo on behalf of the Ayatollah, whose teenage son needed a heart and lung transplant. This was a procedure that had only been done successfully by America and it was agreed that the boy should be brought to America.

However the only available surgeon was an Iranian whose father had been killed by fundamentalists and who still had family in Iran. Bartlet had to persuade him to perform the operation and promised to do all everything in the power of the office to protect the surgeon's family.
6. In which state had Karen Kroft been defeated after promoting a bill for a higher gas tax?

Answer: Michigan

The Administration had asked Karen Kroft to introduce the bill for a higher gas tax and as a result she had lost the election by 127 votes. When Toby told her that they were going to nominate her as Director of the National Parks Service, Karen was thrilled.

However, Toby then had to back-track when they realised that the nomination was Senate-confirmable and that there was no way the Senate would confirm Karen. Toby felt very guilty about raising Karen's hopes, but she was very philosophical about it.
7. What was the name of Toby's father?

Answer: Jules

Toby was estranged from his father Jules (or "Juley" as he called himself) who had been a mobster in Brooklyn and had been sent to jail when Toby was young. On Toby's birthday his father turned up at the White House. Toby was very cool with him, despite the old man's efforts to breach the gap between them and explain his actions in the past.

It was only when Josh said that he wished that he had a living father even if he was a felon that Toby finally thawed. He told his father that he could stay overnight with him.
8. How much did Senator Hoebuck want for a special project in return for his vote for a foreign-aid bill?

Answer: $115,000

Hoebuck met with Toby, asking for $115,000 for a special study into the power of prayer in return for his vote. As this was an incredibly small amount in return for a vote, Josh insisted on taking the information to the President, because he was desperate to get the votes for the bill.

Despite his arguments, Hoebuck's request was turned down. Josh later said to Donna, "I recommended to the President that he buy a yea vote for $115,000 and the Bill of Rights".
9. What subject did CJ's father teach in high school?

Answer: Math

CJ's father Tal had Alzheimer's but was refusing to accept any help. Although he was trying to write a book about the teaching of mathematics, he still made a mistake in a simple calculation which alerted CJ to his deterioration. Eventually she managed to persuade him that he needed professional help. She also persuaded his second wife (who had left when unable to cope with him) to return and give him the support that he needed.
10. Who was Sam's campaign manager in Orange County?

Answer: Scott Holcomb

Scott tried to persuade Sam to come out against the Administration's new tax proposal which would adversely affect the affluent residents of Orange County. Sam realised that the White House had held back the announcement of their tax plan so as not to damage his campaign in Orange County.

As a result they were missing a good media opportunity following the announcement of the Republicans' tax plans. Scott was furious when Sam publicly announced his support for the Democrats' tax plan, and he was then fired by the President.
11. Whose son was taken hostage in Kundu?

Answer: Martha Rowe

Leo met with the relatives of three Marines who had been taken hostage while on a routine patrol of Bitanga Airport. Martha Rowe, the mother of Lance Corporal Raymond Rowe, commented rather sarcastically that the "Bartlet people" were not the ones to serve in the armed forces.

However, when Leo said that he had been a pilot in the Vietnam War, Mrs Rowe had the grace to apologise to him.
12. Whose name made CJ break into uncontrollable giggles?

Answer: Marion Cotesworth Haye

Mrs Cotesworth Haye challenged Abby Bartlet's membership of the Daughters of the American Revolution because it seemed that Abby's ancestor had been a pirate not a patriot. She was threatening to boycott the reception for the DAR and CJ was supposed to persuade her to change her mind.

However, CJ totally lost her composure when confronted by the overpowering woman. Instead Amy and Will had to take over, hinting that Abby intended to present her with a special award at the reception.
13. Who was Toby's college room-mate who wanted to blow the whistle on a lawbreaking chemical company?

Answer: Burt Ganz

Burt said that he wanted federal whistleblower protection when he blew the whistle on his company which had been concealing the amount of highly carcinogenic toxins at their waste-disposal sites. However, when he admitted that he had initialed the reports, the White House Counsel told him that he actually needed immunity from criminal prosecution. Counsel also told Toby and Josh that they had to hand him over otherwise they could go to jail as co-conspirators. Toby managed to get immunity for Burt but then accused him of manipulating him right from the start.
14. Who first alerted the White House to a press leak about a report that contained evidence of the possibility of life on Mars?

Answer: Ralph Gish

Ralph Gish, the Science Editor of the Washington Post, asked whether the White House was concealing a report containing two pieces of evidence about water modules on Mars. As this report had been classified, Joe Quincy investigated the source of the leak.

This led first to a gossip columnist, then to socialite Helen Baldwin and ultimately to Vice President John Hoynes who admitted that he had been having an affair with her and had told her things in order to impress her.
15. What was the name of the Secret Service agent who was killed when Zoey was abducted?

Answer: Molly O'Connor

Molly O'Connor was one of the team assigned to Zoey for her impending visit to France with her boyfriend Jean-Paul. At an introductory meeting with the President, she impressed him by throwing another agent to the floor. However, when Zoey was abducted at the night club, Molly was found dead in the alley behind the club.

As a tribute to the agent, Toby named his new-born daughter Molly.
