"West Wing" Chronology: Part 8 Quiz

This episode takes place two days before Christmas (hence the title). Danny Concannon arrives dressed as Santa Clause, and surprises CJ with a kiss. Things then get serious when he approaches her with a rumor that the US ordered the killing of the Qumari ambassador, which came from someone he met who had been in Bermuda at the time of Sharif's death.

Jean-Paul meets the President and also Zoey's ex-boyfriend Charlie (who is unsurprisingly not happy to meet him). Zoey wants Jean-Paul to spend Christmas with the family and is intending to ask her father. We also meet Toby Zeigler's father in this episode, a man who he has been estranged with for some time due to his criminal past.

The vote is lost because the President refuses Senator Hoebuck's request to include $115,000 for a study into the power of prayer. This episode also has an amusing side story about a photo opportunity with a cow to promote foreign aid, which in the end gets confused and includes a goat instead.

CJ is invited back to her 20th year school reunion in Dayton, Ohio to give a speech. Her father, a former teacher, is struggling to cope with his illness and CJ is very concerned that he no longer has the support of his wife, who has left him. She ends up leaving before she can finish her speech due to an emergency at the White House.

The Khundu situation complicates Bartlet's preparation for his inauguration speech as he and his staff struggle to come up with an appropriate response. In a strange side-story, it is discovered that the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court has been writing some of his summary judgments in poetic verse.

Much to his surprise, Will is offered the Deputy Communications Director job by the President, who is clearly pleased with his work on the inauguration speech. In a very memorable exchange, Bartlet says to Will that he tells everyone to promise to "never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed citizens can change the world".

When prompted why this is the case, Will responds: "it's the only thing that ever has".

Answer: Sam wins the election

The California 47th campaign is in its final week, but isn't going well. Charlie and Toby get into a fight with some hecklers at a bar, and are arrested (but later released) for assault. Donna takes a meeting with a man called Ivan Perez, who later turns out to be a member of the Communist Party. Back at the White House, all of Will's staff have quit except his interns.

Amy's new position as First Lady's Chief of Staff causes immediate tension for Josh when she uses her influence to redirect funding. Also in this episode, a hostage situation develops in Ghana, which ends badly when the US military base is attacked following the rescue.

The First Lady's membership of the Daughters of the American Revolution is at risk due to this relative. Amy dreams up a solution: to give the socialite who is opposing the membership a fake award. They amusingly name the award the "Francis Scott Key key".

On a flight back from Manila, which has already lasted 18 hours, Air Force One's indicator light comes on, which may mean the landing gear has malfunctioned. This causes the plane to stay in the air for the remainder of the episode while everyone in the air (and on the ground) is concerned about it being tampered with. In the end it is resolved as a simple error of the indicator light.

CJ, Toby and Will are in the room at the time, but are not hurt. Josh in is the Roosevelt Room interviewing Joe Quincy, a candidate for a job as a White House counselor. Bartlet is in the Oval Office speaking to the Russian President on the phone, a call which he has to interrupt due to the unfolding drama.

New West Wing staff member Joe Quincy unravels an affair that the VP has been having with a socialite, Helen Baldwin, which starts with a seemingly benign rumor about there being evidence of life on Mars. The story takes place in flashback, with the arrival of the VP's resignation letter at the start.

Charlie and Zoey spend some time together at the arboretum after drinking the champagne, but she ends up going to her party with Jean-Paul. In a dramatic end to the episode, Zoey goes missing from the nightclub when one of her agents is killed.

They name them Huck and Molly, the latter being after the agent who was killed while protecting Zoey. Toby's love for his new kids convinces him that Bartlet should not be making presidential decisions while he is dealing with a kidnapped child.

In the unfolding drama, Bartlet decides it is best to invoke Article 25 of the Constitution to replace himself as President while the search for his daughter continues. Republican Speaker Glenallen Walken is sworn in because the Vice President has resigned and has not yet been replaced.
