Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This game marks the first appearance of what famous 'Mario' series character?

Answer: Yoshi

With "Super Mario Land" actually taking place in Dinosaur Land, it's a fitting debut for the jolly, green dinosaur that would become a key figure in Nintendo branding for decades to follow. Though the aim of this game is still to save Princess Toadstool from Bowser's clutches, helping Yoshi is one of the early goals of the game; you actually start on Yoshi's Island, discovering that Yoshi has also been captured and hidden away. You'll be able to get him for the first time in the Yoshi's Island 2 level.
2. "Super Mario World" introduces Super Mario's cape. Which of these items must be collect to use it?

Answer: Feather

As soon as Mario leaves Yoshi's Island and emerges into Donut Plains 1 he'll come across Super Koopas, enemies which can fly through the air using capes. The catch is that Mario can jump on the flashing ones to collect a feather (and some of these can be found in item boxes as well). Wearing the cape allows Mario to spin attack foes, but more importantly it can give him the power of flight, allowing him to rise into the air-- even with Yoshi-- and flutter with proper technique.
3. How many Switch Palaces can Mario find throughout the game?

Answer: Four

One thing you might realize as you travel around the map is that certain blocks seem to be missing, outlined in the levels by dotted lines. This is because Mario needs to unlock them by jumping on top of the switches found in four locations on the map, each of which will activate a certain colour of block.

The Yellow Switch Palace is in Yoshi's Island, the Green Switch Palace is in Donut Plains, the Red Switch Palace is in the Vanilla Dome, and the Blue Switch Palace is in the Forest of Illusion. Yellow blocks will always contain mushrooms while green ones contain feathers.
4. Mario will generally encounter Boos of various sizes in which of these types of locations?

Answer: Ghost Houses

Starting as early as Donut Plains, Mario will encounter Ghost Houses that almost act as mid-zone fortresses (not unlike the fortresses in "Super Mario Bros. 3"), only instead of facing a mini-boss at the end, Mario will need to survive the Boos inside to locate a normal exit gate, generally located out the back door of the building. On the map, these levels are immediately identifiable as they'll have a Boo floating around outside. Because it's similar to a castle, Mario can not bring Yoshi inside either.

Not that it'd matter-- it's hard to eat a ghost!
5. Four Fortresses can be found throughout the game. What boss waits at the end of each?

Answer: Reznor

The four Fortresses are non-essential for the player to encounter; you could get to Bowser without finding a single one of them since they're only accessible by accessing 'secret' labelled stages via unique means. Completing them, however, is to your benefit as they'll often lead to secret routes and shortcuts that allow you to find new levels and faster back alleys. Fortresses function similarly to Koopa castles. Mario has to get to the end and fight a small boss.

In each Fortress, that small boss is actually four bosses-- Reznor. Reznors will sit on four rotating platforms, and all Mario needs to do is strike them from below, knocking them off their perches.
6. Mario faces Koopalings in a castle located in each major world. There are seven of them, but which is the only one not to have the same battle style as one of their siblings?

Answer: Ludwig Von Koopa

The seven Koopalings, faced in order, are Iggy, Morton, Lemmy, Ludwig, Roy, Wendy, and Larry, and most of them match up to one another in different ways (Iggy's battle is like Larry's, Morton's is like Roy's, and Lemmy's is like Wendy's). The outlier is Ludwig, who's fought midway through the game and has an expansive stage to jump around in.

In all cases, Mario's goal is to jump on their heads either destroying them in three hits or knocking them into lava to their doom. In all cases except Larry's (since he's near the end of the game), finishing the castle generally means completing that area of the map.
7. There are no enemies in the Top Secret Area.

Answer: True

If you're interested in uncovering secrets that can work in your favour, then a visit to the Donut Ghost House, likely your first in the game, can end up fruitful. By flying up and over the stage (from a hole in the ceiling at the start of the level) you can cross over to a secret door that leads to an alternative exit for the stage.

This will unlock a small stage called the Top Secret Area which contains five item blocks, one of which will contain a Yoshi egg (or a 1-Up if you have a Yoshi already) and a series of mushrooms, flowers, and feathers. You can revisit it as much as you want.
8. Using Mechakoopas, how many hits must Mario make on Bowser to defeat him?

Answer: Six

After heading into the Front or Back Door of Bowser's Castle at the end of the valley of Bowser, Mario will get the chance to go one-on-one against the bad guy himself, taking to the castle tower while Bowser flies around in his Koopa clown car. The final battle will take place across three rounds during which Mario will need to do the same thing under different circumstances, hitting Bowser directly with the Mechakoopas he tosses onto the stage as hazards.

If Mario wins, then he, Princess Toadstool, and Yoshi will head off on a vacation, bringing them back to Yoshi's House while the credits roll.
9. If he can find the way, Mario can find access points to the Star World. In each of the levels he finds there, he must do which of the following?

Answer: Find a secret exit

Mario can find separate Star Road entrances in Donut Plains, Vanilla Dome, the Twin Bridges, and the Forest of Illusion, and the Valley of Bowser, and each of these will link Mario to a map in the stars with five points and five difficult levels. Completing each of these levels the traditional way, by crossing the exit gate, is nice, but it won't get you anywhere.

Instead, you need to find the key and keyhole in each so that you can connect the different paths to form a full star. This will allow you to travel between the star access points, but it'll also open the entryway to the Special Zone.
10. Completion of the Special Zone will transform the world map. To what season will it change?

Answer: Autumn

Getting through all the secret exits of the Star World will allow you to take one more star transporter to a unique Special Zone, a series of eight difficult stages (the hardest in the game) to test your Mario mettle. There are no secret exits in any of these levels, so it's just a matter for getting through what the game designers could cook up until you reach one last star at the end of the trail. Passing through this will send you to back into Dinosaur Land, but the world will take on a new colour scheme and enough time will have passed for the leaves to change colour. Certain enemies, you may find, have also changed to suit the season.
