Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How much time are players given to complete World 1-1 in the original "Super Mario Bros." (NES)?

Answer: 400 seconds

The iconic first stage of the original "Super Mario Bros." for the NES gave players 400 seconds to complete the level. Most levels in the game have a 400 second limit, while several have only 300. Once the timer reaches 100 seconds, the background music speeds up, giving gamers an adrenaline rush to get to the flag before time expires.

However, even though the screen shows that players have 400 seconds to complete the level, one second in "Super Mario Bros." is equivalent to only 0.4 seconds in real time, meaning the time limit is actually shorter than what is displayed.
2. What item can Solid Snake use in the original "Metal Gear" (MSX2/NES) to increase the time needed to kill Big Boss and escape Outer Heaven at the end of the game?

Answer: cigarette

At the end of the original "Metal Gear", once Solid Snake has successfully destroyed the Metal Gear unit in the MSX2 version (or the main computer in the NES version), a timer will be set for Solid Snake to escape the Outer Heaven facility (The time differs between the MSX2 and NES versions). In both versions the escape is accompanied by some "hurry up" music.

During his escape, Solid Snake is forced to battle his commanding officer Big Boss, who is revealed to be the real mastermind of Metal Gear project at Outer Heaven. After defeating Big Boss, Solid Snake needs to flee the facility before it explodes. If Snake equips his cigarettes after defeating Big Boss, then the timer will be extended.
3. How long does each round last in "Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!" for NES?

Answer: three minutes

One round in "Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!" for the NES is three minutes long and the player is given three rounds to defeat their opponent. If players find it difficult to defeat their opponents with offense, then another way to defeat them is to play well enough to last all three rounds with them.

Some opponents, such as Mike Tyson himself, can be defeated by decision at the end of the bout if the player has accumulated enough points earned by punching, blocking and dodging. There are some fighters though who will always win by decision no matter how well the player does. In those instances the timer is not a friend.
4. What did the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" need to do within two minutes and twenty seconds in their first NES game?

Answer: disarm eight bombs underwater

The original "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" video game for NES has earned a reputation of being a challenging game. One of the game's most infamous stages was the Dam level (Level 2).

The first half of the stage has the turtles making their way through the Dam itself. The second half has the turtles diving underwater in order to locate and disarm eight bombs in two minutes and twenty seconds. The underwater section is filled with electrified seaweed, lasers and instant kill anemone. When the timer hits twenty seconds, the "hurry up" music hits. If players fail to find and disarm all the bombs in time, its instant game over, no matter how many turtles are still alive.
5. In "Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2" for Sega Genesis, how long could Sonic last underwater without air?

Answer: 30 seconds

In the two original "Sonic the Hedgehog" games for the Sega Genesis, each level has a time limit to complete it. However, the level timer is pretty generous, giving players around ten minutes to complete the level.

However, in both games, when Sonic falls into the water, a 30 second timer is set off screen. This timer can be monitored by listening for a ding every five seconds. Within the last ten seconds, a countdown appears above Sonic's head and the "hurry up" music will cue indicating the player needs to get out of the water ASAP. If the player fails to jump out of the water or find an air bubble in time, Sonic will drown.
6. Which of these tradable items in "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" (N64), does NOT have a time limit?

Answer: Pocket Cucco

There are several items in the trading sequence for "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time", where the item has a limited time to be delivered. If those specific items are not delivered in time, they will spoil and Link will have to return to the previous location to get another one.

The Odd Mushroom needs to be transported from the Lost Woods to Kakariko Village within three minutes, the Eyeball Frog must be taken from Zora's Domain to Lake Hylia within three minutes and the World's Finest Eye Drops must be taken from Lake Hylia to the top of Death Mountain within four minutes. By completing the trading sequence, Link will be awarded the Biggoron's Sword.
7. What is the name of the mission in "Grand Theft Auto III" (PS2/XBox/PC) where Claude is given eight minutes to take out nine SPANK kiosks spread across all three islands?

Answer: Espresso 2 Go

"Espresso 2 Go" is one of the later missions in "Grand Theft Auto III". The mission is given to Claude by the Yakuza boss Asuka Kasen. To complete the mission, players need to destroy nine SPANK (drug) kiosks disguised as espresso booths. Two of them are on Portland Island (easternmost island), five are on Staunton Island (center island) and the last two are on Shoreside Vale (westernmost island).

Once one kiosk is destroyed, Claude will be given eight minutes to traverse all three islands to destroy the rest of them. Most first time and novice players found this mission to be hard. However, by scouting the locations out before destroying them, players can better plan their route to destroy them all within the time limit.
8. In "Assassin's Creed II" (PS3/XBox 360/PC), Ezio Auditore is given two minutes to hit sixteen checkpoints at a Carnevale event held in which city?

Answer: Venice

One of Ezio's targets in "Assassin's Creed II" was a man named Marco Barbarigo, the Doge of Venice. The only way for Ezio to get close to Marco was to win a Golden Mask at the Carnevale in Venice. The Golden Mask would allow Ezio to attend a private party at Marco's palace.

One of the events of the Carnavale was a race to hit sixteen checkpoints, located across the city within a two minute time limit. The race is rather difficult as it is intended to test the player's route planning and parkour skills. A "hurry up" sound will cue in the last ten seconds of the mission.
9. A man named Peter Englert places several orders in "Death Stranding" (PS4/PC) for what type of food that must be delivered within a given time limit?

Answer: pizza

In "Death Stranding", the main character Sam Porter Briges is a professional delivery man. The majority of the game's missions has Sam deliver cargo from one location to another. One of the clients is a man named Peter Englert, who resides in the game's Central Region. At several points during the campaign, Peter will request for a pizza to be delivered to his bunker within a specified time limit.

Players must remember to keep the pizza horizontal at all times. If they accidentally place the container on its side, it will spoil and they will have to go back and restart the mission. After completing all the pizza missions, Sam will gain access to Peter's bunker, which reveals that he is really an alias for the game's main antagonist.
10. Cloud is given the choice to set the Mako Reactor bomb to either 20 or 30 minutes in "Final Fantasy VII Remake" (PS4). Was the same option given in the original "Final Fantasy VII" (PS1)?

Answer: No

In "Final Fantasy VII Remake" (PS4), when Cloud Strife plants a bomb in the Mako Reactor in the game's opening act, players are given the choice to set the timer for 30 minutes or 20 minutes. By selecting the shorter time, players can earn better rewards at the end.

This option was not given in the original "Final Fantasy VII" (PS1). In the original game, Cloud was only given ten minutes to escape the Mako Reactor. In both versions, if players failed to escape the Mako Reactor in time, it was instantly "Game Over".
