Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time", the horse Epona is named after a goddess from what sort of mythology?

Answer: Celtic

Epona is the Irish Celtic goddess of horses, mules and cavalrymen. Among the Gaulish Celts themselves, she was worshipped as goddess of horses, mules, oxen, and springs and rivers (to an extent). She was the Celtic goddess whose authority extended even beyond death, accompanying the soul on its final journey. Epona is depicted sitting sidesaddle, lying on a horse, or standing with multiple horses around her.
2. The plotline of "The King of Fighters" fighting game series is based off of a Japanese myth about the eight-headed demon Orochi. In the manga series, we see a character named Yuki being used as the final Kushinada sacrifice for Orochi. Yuki is the girlfriend of the game's main character: Kyo Kusanagi. In the Japanese myth, what is the name of the eighth Kushinada's lover?

Answer: Susano-Wo

Long ago, an eight-headed serpent named Orochi demanded that one a year, one beautiful maiden be sacrified to him every year for eight years. The maiden to be sacrificed was known as the Kushinada. Finally, on the eighth and final year, a maiden was chosen who happened to be the lover of the former god Susano-Wo. Unwilling to allow his lover to be sacrificed for Orochi, Susano-Wo called upon the protector of the Kushinada: a powerful man named Kusanagi. Kusanagi and Susano-Wo together sealed Orochi in a 1,000 year sleep.

In "The King of Fighters", Kusanagi and Hakkeshu fight the demon Orochi. This tale is also played out in the anime series "Blue Seed", though Susano-Wo is depicted as being evil.
3. Sephiroth is a character from "Final Fantasy VII". According to Kabbalistic mythology, Sephiroth are are also the spheres which compose the Tree of Life. How many spheres are in the Sephiroth?

Answer: Ten

The Tree is composed of ten spheres that represent the qualities of God plus 22 life paths that link the spheres themselves. There is also another sphere, not a Sephira properly, which represents "Daath" (Knowledge) as an ultimate target of living beings.

They consist of, in descending order, Keter (The Crown, Reason), Chokhmah (Wisdom), Binah (Intuition, Understanding), Chesed (Mercy), Geburah (Strength), Tiferet (Beauty), Netzach (Victory), Hod (Majesty, Glory), Yesod (Foundation) and Malkuth (Sovereignty).
4. From "Chrono Trigger", the sword known as the Masamune is actually from a Japanese legend. By what nickname was this katana known?

Answer: "The Divine Katana"

It happened one day in feudal Japan that a blacksmith created a katana that could not be broken. It was composed made up of little scales of iron braided together: this way, even if some scales would have been broken, the others under them would have resisted, unlike a standard blade. That katana was called "Masamune", which means "The Essence of Justice". All the warriors who wielded it never lost a battle, for the Masamune could cut into pieces the strongest armor and destroy the most powerful weapons. All the samurai who gained its possession were considered "protected by the gods", and therefore the Masamune was called "The Divine Katana".

The name "Masamune" has appeared in several other games, such as "Breath of Fire II".
5. From "Marvel Super Heroes" is a character named Thanos. His name is derived from the Greek god of death, named Thanatos. According to Greek mythology, who is Thanatos' brother?

Answer: Hypnos

Thanatos was death personified and is the Greek equivalent of the Grim Reaper. His twin brother, Hypnos, is the god of sleep. Thanos, however, has nothing to do with the Greek myth aside from his name. Thanos was enamored with the being known as Death.

He devoted all of his energies to pleasing her, and eventually became her servant. Desiring to be her equal, he sought the Infinity Gems, six stones of great power that would give him control over the universe.
6. Quetzalcoatl from "Final Fantasy VIII" is named after an Aztec god. Over what element did the god Quetzalcoatl rule?

Answer: Wind

Quetzalcoatl was the god of wind, water, and fertility. He was seen as a feathered, flying snake. One of his forms was known as Ehecatl, god of the winds. As Ehecatl, he could bring life to the lifeless. In "Final Fantasy VIII", he is of the Lightning element and looks nothing like his Aztec namesake. Perhaps the creators of "Final Fantasy VIII" just liked the name.

Incidentally, Quetzalcoatl is also the name of a prehistoric feathered lizard.
7. Also from "Final Fantasy VIII" is a character named Raijin. He was named after a Japanese thunder god, but he was mistranslated. What should his name have been?

Answer: Raiden

Raiden is a god of thunder and lightning. He is pictured as a red demon with sharp claws and carrying a large drum. His brother is Fujin, a god of wind. He is also pictured as a demon, but with leopard skins and a bag of winds over his shoulder. According to legend, the two fought against Buddha and ultimately lost after a long and fierce battle. Raiden is also a character from "Fatal Fury", though he's probably better known through "Capcom vs SNK". Though I may not like the "Final Fantasy" series, there is a great deal of mythology mentioned in the names of their characters.
8. In games, a "Basilisk" has taken on many forms, from a ostrich-lizard ("Breath of Fire II"), to a serpent, and so on. It's truest form, however, is an animal with the head, torso and legs of a rooster, the tongue of a snake and the wings of a bat. Which animal is immune to its deadly gaze?

Answer: Weasel

Basically the creature can burn everything it approaches, and can kill every living thing with a mere glance. However the moment the creature sees its own reflection, it will die of fright. Yet even the Basilisk has natural enemies. The weasel is immune to its glance and if the Basilisk gets bitten, it withdraws from the fight to eat some rue (which is the only plant that does not wither) and returns with renewed strength.

The carcass of a basilisk was often hung in houses to keep spiders away.

It was also used in the temples of Apollo and Diana, where no swallow ever dared to enter. In Egypt, it was called Ouraion.
9. The ultimate dragon transformations in the "Breath of Fire" series are Agni and Rudra. These are also the names of gods from what sort of mythology?

Answer: Hindu

Agni is the Vedic god of the divine fire, both of real fire (in the hearth) and the fire that consumes the soul and the food in the belly. He is the spark of life, and so a part of him is in every living thing. He is red in color, with black eyes and wild, black hair.

He has two faces smeared with butter, seven firey tongues and gold sharpened teeth, seven arms, three legs and seven rays of light that emanate from his body. He either rides on a ram, or on a chariot, pulled by goats or sometimes parrots. Rudra is the god of storms, winds and death.

He is the personification of the uncultured force, causing destruction and disarray. Gradually became seen as a gentle protector of hunters and animals, and eventually his name changed to Shiva.
10. From "Darkstalkers" is the character Morrigan, whose name is derived from a Celtic goddess. In "Marvel vs Capcom", what is the name of the secret character that looks a lot like her?

Answer: Lilith

Morrigan is the goddess of battles, war, death, strife, and fertility. She appears as either a single goddess or a trio. The other deities who form the trio are Badb ("Crow"), and either Macha (also means "Crow") or Nemain ("Frenzy"). She can take on the form of a crow or raven. If seen by a warrior before a battle, that warrior is sure to die.

In "Darkstalkers", Morrigan is the queen of the Underworld and appears as a beautiful girl with green hair and wings both on her back and coming out of her head.
