Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Louie the Fly" is a promotional character introduced to advertise which type of product?

Answer: Insecticide

"Louie the Fly" was introduced in 1962 as the villainous mascot for Mortein fly-spray. Mortein is an Australian brand fly-spray that was purchased by the British organisation Reckitt. Louie is an animated fly who revels in his lack of cleanliness and his ability to spread disease. And, as he proclaims, he's "afraid of no-one, except the man with the can of Mortein".

The jingle was created by Australian author Bryce Courtney, noted for his novel "The Power of One" (1989).

2. If your friend from Belo Horizonte says "Boa noite" to you, what time is it most likely?

Answer: night

The Brazilian Portuguese way to bid someone a good say is to say "Bom dia." They often use this as part of both saying hello and saying goodbye. "Boa tarde" means good afternoon and is used until dark. "Boa noite" means good evening and is used after sundown.

3. What Italian city, whose name looks more like a type of sausage, boasts one of the oldest universities in the world?

Answer: Bologna

Boloney sausage is a finely ground pork sausage containing cubes of lard. It originated in the Italian city of Bologna, which is also where, according to tradition, the first university was founded in 1088. Increased economic activity in the twelfth century created a need for institutions of higher learning. Due to the scarcity of qualified teachers, students had to move to where their teachers lived. Bologna became the center for the study of law; the association ("universitas") that managed the living arrangements of the students became the model for many universities in southern Europe.

4. In the United States, a charge-off is a declaration by a credit card company or other creditor that a debt is too delinquent and will likely not be paid. Which of the following bodies would be most likely to buy that debt and try to get paid in full?

Answer: a collections agency

Debt buyers are companies or firms (e.g. collections agencies) that purchase a debt that is long past due for a small fraction of the original debt. They then try to collect on that debt in full. In recent years, debt buyers have come under attack for their underhanded business practices as they have absolutely no need to keep a cordial relationship with the debtor. Sometimes these practices can include threatening the debtor with jail, confiscation of personal property, or even just a bad credit rating.

5. Japan's flag consists of a field of white with a red disc representing the sun in its center. What Asian country, the capital of which is Dhaka, has a flag made up of a green field with a red disc at the center?

Answer: Bangladesh

The red disc represents the rising sun in the aftermath of the nation's struggle for independence. It is placed slightly to the left of the field and not in the exact center.

6. What was the maiden name of Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of US president Franklin D. Roosevelt?

Answer: Eleanor Roosevelt

Eleanor was the niece of US president Theodore Roosevelt (her father was his brother) so she was born with the name. She shared an ancestor with her future husband: Eleanor's great-great-great-great-great-grandfather was also Franklin's great-great-great-great-grandfather. That ancestor, the son of a Dutch immigrant, lived in the 17th century.

7. The first Harley Davidson motorcycle was built in 1903, and used a can for a carburetor. The can was originally used for containing what fruit?

Answer: Tomato

In 1887, U.S. tariff laws imposed a duty on vegetables but not on fruits. This meant it had to be decided what the tomato was. The US Supreme Court ruled that it was a vegetable, as it is commonly served with 'dinner and not dessert'. Botanically, a tomato is the ovary, together with its seeds, of a flowering plant: therefore it is a fruit, and classed as a fruit elsewhere.

8. In the 1950s, which international organization attempted to persuade trick-or-treating children in the US to collect money for underprivileged children instead of asking for candy?

Answer: UNICEF

The United Nations created the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund in 1946 to meet the post-war needs of children and women. In 1950, a local group in Philadelphia collected nickels and dimes instead of candy on Hallowe'en which produced a $17 donation to UNICEF. That local effort grew into a widespread programme involving millions of kids in the US, Canada, Ireland, Mexico, and Hong Kong. UNICEF won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965 and is now active in over 190 countries.

9. Jeff Bezos in the 1990s started something that totally refined the shopping scenario in the world. What?

Answer: Amazon.com

Amazon.com was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994. It is interesting to note that the company was originally founded in Bezos's garage in Washington, and has now expanded so much that it is now the largest e-commerce site in this world!

10. Perhaps my better half would know. While doing genealogical research I found my grandfather's name on a land deed, followed by the term "et ux." What does that term mean?

Answer: and wife

While still used on legal documents, "et uxor" and its abbreviated "et ux." are slowly giving way to progress: actually including the wife's name on the deed - how progressive! Et alii (abbreviated et al.) means "...and others." Of the ten or so references I examined, a single source mentions the term "et lux." as the masculine "...and husband."
