Weird Pubs: Outside Great Britain Quiz

Questions about pubs outside of Great Britain - the old the weird and the downright freaky! Please forgive the phrase "pub", which is a rather quintessentially British word. Outside my homeland a pub is more likely to be a bar and/or restaurant.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Eagor's Bar and Grill, Hermosa Beach, California USA This pub is uniquely themed by a former Disney set designer to a specific theme. What theme is it?

Answer: Family Horror - including levitating furniture and flying cutlery

Eagor's Bar and Grill is a family horror themed bar and restaurant. Dine from levitating tables and watch cutlery fly past you in this cob-webbed haunted house style premises. Enjoy the many displayed props from famous horror movies too.
2. Cabbages and Condoms, Chiang Rai, Thailand Miles from anywhere this remarkably named bar and restaurant is owned by Khun Mechai Viravaidya. Cabbages are the part of the staple diet in this area but just why did Mr Viravaidya call his pub "Cabbages and Condoms"?

Answer: He was a former Thai Minister of Health who arranged the free issue of condoms to brothels

Mr Viravaidya was indeed a former Minister of Health and avid supporter of family planning. He neither has AIDS nor operates a brothel, but he does arrange for the free distribution of condoms to brothels personally. The place is awash with family planning information and displays. Diners will find they are served a condom rather than an after dinner mint.
3. Red Sea Star, Eilat, Israel This allegedly unique bar and restaurant is unique in which way?

Answer: It is wholly submerged 20 feet beneath the Red Sea

Housed in a trio of steel tanks and anchored by concrete this bar restaurant is submerged 20 feet below the surface of the red sea. 62 panoramic windows afford spectacular views of exotic sea creatures and a coral garden. Access is via a 200 foot walkway to a reception lounge from which one takes an elevator down.
4. The Caveman Restaurant, Richland, Missouri, USA As the name suggests this "pub" is in a cave. The deck area within overlooks a river 100 feet below and the venue even contains it's own natural waterfalls. But how does one access this remarkable venue?

Answer: By elevator upwards

First you have to find the place where a beaten up courtesy van will collect you and haul you along dusty dirt roads to the remote location. You will then have the option of either mounting a 50 foot rickety spiral stairway or take the more convenient elevator up. 160 tons of rock was dug out of the limestone cave using little more than pickaxes and wheelbarrows.

A staggering 35,000 people were served in the first 8 months that it opened. A beautiful and unique venue to which people flock from all around the world.
5. Le Cercueil, Brussels, Belgium This pub simply oozes an aura - but is this aura one of sunshine, gloom, opulence or frugality?

Answer: Gloom - everything is geared to depict death

Gloom - Le Cercueil is French for "coffin" and there are plenty here. The bar is built of coffins as are the tables. One drinks from skull shaped pots. House specialties are "Demon's Sperm" and "Corpse Urine". Background music is Gregorian chants and funeral marches.
6. Absolut Ice Bar, Stockholm, Sweden The name gives a clear clue but what is unusual about this Swedish pub?

Answer: The entire premises and fittings are constructed of ice

Opened in 2002 The Absolut Ice Bar is located off the reception to the Nordic Sea Hotel, and is named after the brand of vodka. It is constructed entirely of ice cut from the Torne river area in northern Sweden. The walls are block ice, all the furniture, the bar and even the glasses are made of ice.

The entrance is sealed by two doors to keep the cold (a steady -5 degrees centigrade) in. You pay a cover charge at the entrance for protective clothing which includes feet protectors. Drink swiftly before it too freezes!
7. Augustinerbrau, Salzburg, Austria Perhaps the best and largest example of a bierkellar so typical of German speaking nations. The Augustinerbrau is now unique in Austria. Why is this so?

Answer: Located in a monastery, it is the only religious establishment in Austria that is still brewing beer

Like Doctor Whos' TARDIS, the small entrance (easily missed) belies the vast interior of this massive beerhall located in a real monastery. Local ales, including those brewed by the monastery, are served in litre steins together with unusual copper devices filled with warm water to keep the ale at the correct drinking temperature.
Incidentally the nunnery in "The Sound of Music" was in fact the Nonnberg Nunnery.
8. Museum HR Giger Bar, Gruyeres, Switzerland This cavernous bar opened in 2003 and is constructed in a complex skeletal style giving the impression of being inside some person or creature's body. A noted Swiss movie set designer created this remarkable visual effect which was inspired by a very famous movie that he had been heavily involved with. What was the movie that had so inspired this creation?

Answer: "Alien"

Swiss H. R. Giger had worked as a set designer on "The Alien". The scene where John Hurt drops into the bowls of an alien spacecraft and where a creature attaches itself to his helmet being his focus of design for this pub. The huge arches of vertebrae, the "biomechanoid" style of furniture and alien figures dotted around the place all bring back visions of this Academy Award winning movie.
9. 1975, Beirut, Lebanon This pub is a sombre place to visit in what is now the centre of vibrant nightlife in Beirut. It is styled to provide an everlasting memory of which events in Lebanese history?

Answer: It is designed to recapture the troubles of the Lebanese civil war

The pub maintains clear reference to the Lebanese civil war of 1975 to 1990, the politics of which are not appropriate to go into here. The waiters wear dogtags, combat uniform and helmets. Tank shells, sandbags, camouflage netting and wartime graffiti are everywhere and a figure of a masked militiaman is climbing up a pillar over the bar.
10. The Ponderosa Bar, Dungiven Co. Down, Ireland Apart from being Ireland's' highest pub at 1,000 feet above sea level this former farmhouse is unique in one other respect. In what other way is it unique?

Answer: It is self sufficient in fuel, electricity and water

The Ponderosa Bar is self sufficient. Fuel is cut from nearby peat bogs to create heating. It has its own deep water well supplying all water and its own electricity generation plant.
