Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As Mikkel was dying, Thorn swore to look after Mikkel's son and wife. We catch up with Thorn six years later when he has become a drunk and it is Mikkel's wife who is helping him. What triggered his descent into drunkeness?

Answer: He lost his right hand in an accident

During the return voyage from the raid when Mikkel was killed, Thorn lost his hand in an accident. He gave up his place on the wolfship and turned to drink to deal with his loss and life in general. It was Karina Mikkelswife who started Thorn's recovery process by employing him in her eating house.
2. What was revolutionary about Hal's ship the Heron?

Answer: It used two jib-type sails

The traditional Skandian wolfship had a square-rigged sail which allowed it to sail downwind but not upwind. Oarsmen were used when moving upwind. Hal's design used a triangular sail with one point fixed to the bow and another to the mast. The shape of the sail was controlled by hauling in a rope (or 'sheet' to use the correct sailing term) attached to the third corner.

This design allowed the ship to sail much higher into the wind than the square-rigged sail.
3. The first major assessment task involved a mountain run. Although the fastest runners were in the other teams, how did Hal's Herons win?

Answer: The Herons ran as a team whereas the others didn't

The teams had been supplied with a list of tasks that they would be assessed on. Some were individual events (and were marked as such) and some were team events. The other teams had failed to notice that the first task was a team event and so although their individual runners came in before the Herons, they were disqualified.
4. With only eight in the Heron team competing against ten in each of the other teams, how did the Herons win against the Sharks in the tug of war?

Answer: The Herons blew the 'winning' whistle early

Jesper 'borrowed' the whistle from the referee Gort and blew it on Hal's signal which was when the Herons were close to being pulled over the line. Apart from the anchors, they all let go and the Sharks started celebrating because they believed that they had won.

Instead Ingvar, the Heron's anchor man, pulled the Sharks' anchor over the line. Jesper in the meantime had returned the 'borrowed' whistle and Edvin suggested that the whistle noise had come from some jackdaws mimicking Gort's whistle.
5. Tursgud had got Hal pinned by the arms by some of his Sharks crew. How was Tursgud prevented from carrying out a beating?

Answer: Rolland and the Wolves intervened

Tursgud wanted revenge for what he saw as cheating during the tug of war. He chose a moment when most of the Heron team were away or prevented from helping. After Hal broke his nose, Tursgud got the advantage by having his men seize Hal and pin his arms. Rolland and his team stopped the planned beating and sent the Sharks away.
6. Having badly upset Thorn by reminding him of his past, how did Hal manage to get back into Thorn's good books?

Answer: He made an artificial hand for Thorn

Hal went around to Thorn's hut to apologize and to offer the attachments he had made to go on Thorn's arm stump. Thorn was happy to accept the apology, realising that his own pride prevented him starting the reconciliation. The artificial limb attachments made him very happy.
7. Hal's ship the Heron was leading the 'round the buoys' race and looked certain to win. Why did the Heron lose?

Answer: They went to assist the dismasted Lynx

The Heron was building a commanding lead when the Lynx lost its mast during a tack, a risky manoeuver for a square-rigged vessel. The broken mast damaged the hull and it was beginning to sink. The Heron turned around to assist, however the Porpoise, helmed by Tursgud, ignored the Lynx and carried on for the finishing line.
8. During the night attack assessment, how did Hal's team manage to get the plaque into the box in the hut despite being outnumbered?

Answer: Jesper was hidden in the hut before their turn started

As Hal managed to manoeuver Tursgud into attacking first against the Herons as defenders, Jesper was able to hide in the hut under a bed. His absence during the first assault was not noticed. On his turn, Hal's planned massed assault on the hut ended in a confused mass of people at the door. The confusion allowed Jesper to sneak out of the hut after planting the plaque.
9. Having won the brotherband championship, how did Hal and his crew become outcasts?

Answer: Allowing the treasured Andomal relic to be stolen

The Heron brotherband were given the honour of guarding the Andomal relic from midnight on the night of their win until the following dawn. They were exhausted and Hal allowed them to sleep and take turns doing the watch. With a change of wind direction and strengthening winds, Hal went improve the mooring warps on the Heron.

When he returned, he found everyone asleep and the Andomal gone. Erak the Oberjarl furious and stripped them of their championship win, ordered the return of the weapon prizes and seized all their property including Hal's ship, the Heron.
10. Hal and his crew planned to redeem themselves. Who else decided to join the brotherband on their quest?

Answer: Thorn

Thorn was contemplating going into exile when he overheard Hal and his crew deciding to go after the Andomal thieves. One of the things they lacked was money for supplies. Thorn stepped in to offer the money on the condition that he could join their crew. Everyone welcomed him and they set about leaving without drawing attention to themselves.
