After the barrier became transparent at the end of the previous book, many children throughout the FAYZ set-up a small camp where the highway met the barrier. They all wanted to see their parents. But, because they refused to leave the area, they were slowly starving. Caine was in charge of Perdido Beach, but no one would listen to what he said, and he didn't try to help. Edilio and Sam came down from the lake and formed a truce with Caine. Edilio took over the care of the town while Sam and Caine went out to find and kill Gaia. Caine also wanted to rescue Diana.

2. What was happening to the barrier throughout the book?

Answer: It was turning completely black.

Normally the barrier was gray at the bottom and seemed to turn transparent as it went up. Many people began to notice a black stain that was spreading up from the ground. By the end of the novel, the entire dome is black, obscuring all light.

Lana earns Astrid's respect when she heals Sam, who was dying from a wound.

She worked for Caine for awhile spying on Sam.

Quinn, who was extremely upset about the sentencing, saved Cigar from Penny and brought him to Lana. Lana tried to regrow his eyes, but they came back very small, and he could see strange things.
