Sam is known as School Bus Sam because when he was younger he saved everyone on a field trip when their bus driver had a heart attack and he drove the bus to safety. Sam is one of the main characters in the series and he is the leader of the townies.

Howard came up with the name, FAYZ. The "Fallout Alley" part refers to Perdido Beach's nickname, Fallout Alley. Everyone calls it the FAYZ after awhile.

Panda and Cookie both started off on Orc's side. Panda then worked for Caine, mostly as a driver or a guard. Cookie was hurt by Caine at the beginning of the book and spent most of his time in the make-shift hospital in the church's basement. Later, Cookie was healed by Lana and helped Dahra. Bug was a freak who worked for Caine. He could camouflage himself.

No one is sure what causes people to get powers, but it may be because of radiation. The powers are usually used through the hands. Some other powers are the ability to shot light, transporting, healing, and reading power strength.

Coates is a school for rich and troubled kids. Most of the antagonists from the book, including Caine, came from Coates. Some of the students from Coates aren't bad though.

Mary eats until she throws up. She and her brother, John, care for the preschoolers in the day care. The preschoolers are called prees. Mary is known as Mother Mary and John is known as Brother John.

Little Pete, or Little Petey, is autistic. He doesn't relate to his surroundings or the people around him. He has the power to teleport him self and others and once he tried to choke Sam with his mind. He is the most powerful character in the book. The term "window seat" refers to the seat in Astrid's bedroom.

McDonald's had a delivery the day of the FAYZ. Albert liked cooking so he decided to take over the McDonald's. He made food for everyone in town. Albert stuck to the McDonald's manual for all of the rules. The food was originally correct, but later changed due to lack of buns. They had French toast burgers, English muffin burgers, and waffle burgers.

Quinn does work for Caine for a short while. He tells Caine that Sam is going to go shopping with Astrid and they kidnap them. Later that day, Quinn rescues him from the weight room. Things are weird between them for awhile after that.

The coyotes lived in the desert. They first attacked and kidnapped Lana. The coyotes, like many other animals, mutated. They are much larger than they should be, having been described as being as large as Great Danes. Pack Leader, the leader of the coyotes, could also speak English. The coyotes worked for Caine, Drake, and the Darkness.

Patrick is Lana's dog. He almost always stays with Lana. The only time he left Lana was when she went down the mine to the darkness. Patrick was threatened both by Drake and Pack Leader at times so that Lana would do what they wanted. Lana first used her healing powers on him when he was badly hurt driving off a mountain lion.

Drake Merwin is one of the worst characters. He is a sadist and carries a gun with him for most of the book. He is very dangerous and is used by Caine to chase people down. At one point, Sam used his power on his arm and Diana had to saw it off. Later, though, the Darkness gave him a snake and whip-like arm.

Diana Ladris works for Caine and gets away with lots of remarks because of his crush. Her power is the ability to read other people's power strength. She and Drake do not get along at all and Drake wants to kill her. Although Caine likes her, she does not feel the same way.

Answer: Little Pete

Little Pete used his teleporting power to make everyone fifteen years old and older disappear. He also stopped a meltdown at the power plant and saved them all. It is not apparent if he caused the barrier though.

Answer: Thanksgiving

Albert was in charge of making the meal. They had a lot of the traditional food of Thanksgiving, including turkey, cranberry sauce and pies. Before they began to eat, Sam gave them all a moving speech.
