Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Brianna
Answer: Super speed
Brianna nicknames herself "Breeze" for her fast running. Not only can she run fast, but she can use her quickness to write as fast as she talks, or to beat up someone by punching them many times before they can react. Because of the name similarity, I kept confusing Brianna with Brittney, who is immortal and fuses with Drake in "Lies".
2. Caine
Answer: Telekinesis
Caine, Sam's twin brother, has one of the most powerful mutations: telekinesis. He doesn't have to physically touch anyone to hit them. He's one of the villains of the series. At the end of "Light", we find out that his mother named him David, but his adopted family renamed him Caine.
3. Dekka
Answer: Gravity manipulation
Dekka can cancel gravity within a certain distance of herself. She uses it in "Plague" to carry a missile car to Perdido Beach to fight the bugs. When bugs get into her, she asks Sam to kill her. Instead, he's able to burn them out of her, taking out a chunk of her shoulder in the process.
4. Duck
Answer: Density alteration
Duck discovers his mutation in "Hunger" when his pool is "invaded" by bullies. He falls through the pool floor after being pushed underwater. After experimentation, he finds that he can change his density to rise or fall: negative thoughts usually send him plummeting through the earth while happy ones make him float.
He uses his power to try to kill the Gaiaphage at the end of the book. He dies while the Gaiaphage survives.
5. Hunter
Answer: Microwaves
Hunter uses his microwave powers to heat up something from the inside. He finds it very useful in hunting. After being exiled from Perdido Beach for accidentally killing Harry with his power, he continues using his microwaves to hunt animals and leave them for the others. He asks Sam to mercy kill him in "Plague" after being infected by the bugs. Hunter's real name is Samuel.
6. Lana
Answer: Healing
It's a good thing Lana can heal: the FAYZ barrier goes up while she rides in a truck with her grandfather. Suddenly without a driver, the truck careens off the road, giving Lana multiple series injuries. She discovers her mutant powers afterwards, letting her heal her gruesome wounds.
However, strange things happen when she tries to regrow lost limbs. Everyone respects her for her healing, but some think she's stuck-up.
7. Penny
Answer: Illusions
While Penny can create any kind of illusion, she becomes sadistic and starts to specialize in torturous ones, like making people think maggots are eating them or that they're on fire. After Caine declares himself King, he uses Penny and her powers as punishment for extreme wrongdoers, like when Cigar accidentally kills someone.
The illusions she uses on him are so powerful that Cigar claws his eyes out. Drake crushes Penny's head with a rock in "Fear".
8. Sam
Answer: Light
Not all the mutations come after the FAYZ barrier goes up: Sam discovered his power before the FAYZ existed when he burned off his stepfather's hand. Sam's power is one of the strongest in the FAYZ. He can create both light for illumination and concentrated laser beams.
9. Taylor
Answer: Teleportation
Taylor likes her ability better than Brianna's: she'd rather instantly be somewhere else than run fast to get there. Unfortunately, when Pete messes with her DNA in "Fear", her skin turns gold, and her subsequent teleportations put her in the middle of objects, severing her left hand and both legs. Pete's alterations make her a sexless, reptilian, plant...thing. No absence of nightmare fuel, body horror, and gruesome deaths in these books.
10. Toto
Answer: Truth detection
Toto, introduced in "Plague", has lived on his own in a military base since the FAYZ went up. He can tell when others are truthful, which other kids start using to their advantage. For example, when the kids are gathered to decide who will lead at the end of "Plague", Caine hopes that dancing on the edge of truth while in Toto's presence will get the others to accept him as king, though this tactic somewhat backfires on him.
However, the other kids mostly see his penchant for saying who's telling the truth as an annoyance.
