Star Wars - Original Trilogy Trivia Questions

1. The comedic duo of C-3PO and R2-D2 are the first characters we meet in "Star Wars: A New Hope" as they are on a ship under attack from an Imperial Star Destroyer. What does C-3PO say as the ship shudders around him?

From Quiz
"Star Wars" Episodes IV-VI: Their First Lines

Answer: "Did you hear that? They shut down the main reactor. We'll be destroyed for sure. This is madness!"

The movie opens with a small spaceship being chased and attacked by a much larger Imperial Star Destroyer. On the ship, C-3PO, speaking to R2-D2, is quick to portend their impending destruction. Each of the other quotes given are spoken by C-3PO at different points in the movie franchise: "I am not sure this floor is entirely stable." is from "The Phantom Menace" when we first meet the incomplete C-3PO; "What's all this? A battle? There must be some mistake! I'm programmed for etiquette, not destruction!" is from "Attack of the Clones" during the battle on Geonosis when his head is attached to a battle droid; and "I really don't see how that is going to help! Surrender is a perfectly acceptable alternative in extreme circumstances!" is from "The Empire Strikes Back" in response to Han Solo's describing his plan to escape the Imperial fleet in the garbage.

2. Which bad man harnessed the power of lightning or electricity through The Force?

From Quiz Bad Men

Answer: The Emperor

Emperor Palpatine wields no physical weapons (like a light saber) in the original trilogy.

3. In "The Empire Strikes Back", what is the one thing that Lando Calrissian does not call Han Solo?

From Quiz "Star Wars" Nicknames, Insults and Titles

Answer: Scruffy-looking Nerf herder

Lando Calrissian acts mad and calls Han Solo a "slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler" just after Han and company land in Cloud City, and then "old pirate" after Lando drops the charade. He then asks Chewbacca, "And how are you doing, Chewbacca? Still hanging around this loser?" Princess Leia is the one who calls Han a "scruffy-looking Nerf herder".

4. What is the name of the captain aboard the rebel blockade runner in "Star Wars: A New Hope"?

From Quiz "You Rebel Scum!"

Answer: Antilles

Captain Antilles has his neck broken by Darth Vader for refusing to reveal the whereabouts of the technical readout of the Death Star. A younger Captain Antilles appears in "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith", commanding the same ship. The name Antilles recurs throughout the "Star Wars" films. It is the surname of Wedge, the rebel pilot who appears in all three of the original films. It is also given as the surname of the senator from Alderaan who was nominated to succeed Supreme Chancellor Valorum in "The Phantom Menace".

5. Whose lack of faith does Darth Vader find disturbing?

From Quiz "I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing"

Answer: Admiral Motti's

Motti sees the Death Star as a more powerful force than Vader's "sorceror's ways". As punishment for this lack of faith, Vader treats Motti to a telekinetic strangulation, until Grand Moff Tarkin calls a halt. The cast list for "Star Wars" lists the two imperial officers in the conference room scene as General Motti and General Taggi. However, www.starwars.com notes them as Admiral Motti and General Tagge. These latter forms are the ones I have used throughout the quiz. The situation is further confused by the fact that many of the officers are referred to as simply "commander", regardless of rank.

6. 'If this is the consular ship, where is the __________?' - Darth Vader

From Quiz 'Star Wars' Quotes

Answer: ambassador

Asked of Captain Antilles, moments before his death.

7. This bad man likes to choke, by way of The Force, those who disagree with him or fail to produce results.

From Quiz Bad Men

Answer: Darth Vader

Darth Vader loved to choke people, but possibly got soft in his old age; after choking at least four people (Antilles, Needa, Ozzel, and Motti) in "A New Hope" and "The Empire Strikes Back", he choked no one in "Return of the Jedi".

8. Which rebel officer told Leia he had "feared the worst" when he heard about Alderaan?

From Quiz "You Rebel Scum!"

Answer: General Willard

Leia dismisses his fears, being more concerned with getting the technical plans for the Death Star from R2-D2 before it arrives in the Yavin system.

9. Who does Darth Vader execute for being clumsy and stupid?

From Quiz "I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing"

Answer: Admiral Ozzel

Ozzel brought the imperial fleet out of hyperspace too close to Hoth, alerting the rebels to their presence. Viewers of the BBC children's TV series "Grange Hill" will appreciate the true villainy of the Empire - Michael Sheard, who played Admiral Ozzel, also appeared as Mr. Bronson, Grange Hill's evil and bewigged French teacher. In fact, such is Hollywood's love for casting British actors in sinister and villainous roles that many of the imperial officers are played by British actors, including Grand Moff Tarkin, Moff Jerjerrod, General Veers, General Tagge, Admiral Piett and Captain Needa in addition to Admiral Ozzel.

10. 'R2, fire up the _________.' - Luke Skywalker

From Quiz 'Star Wars' Quotes

Answer: convertors

Luke gives this command from the cockpit of his X-Wing.

11. The idea for Chewbacca the Wookiee came from George Lucas's pet what?

From Quiz 'Star Wars' Part 1 of 2

Answer: Dog

The dog's name was Indiana!

12. Who gives the tactical briefing to the rebel pilots on Yavin 4?

From Quiz "You Rebel Scum!"

Answer: General Dodonna

General Dodonna is also on hand to pass the medals to Princess Leia which she then awards to Luke and Han for their efforts in destroying the Death Star. Poor Chewie gets no medal though.

13. What other title does Governor Tarkin hold?

From Quiz "I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing"

Answer: Grand Moff

Grand Moff Tarkin was played by Peter Cushing, famous for playing Van Helsing to Christopher Lee's Dracula in the Hammer horror films. I have absolutely no idea what a moff or a grand moff is.

14. 'He's no good to me _____.' -Boba Fett

From Quiz 'Star Wars' Quotes

Answer: dead

Boba Fett says this to Darth Vader concerning Han Solo's encasement in carbonite.

15. The name R2-D2 came about during the filming of George Lucas's movie 'American Graffiti'. What does R2-D2 stand for?

From Quiz 'Star Wars' Part 1 of 2

Answer: Reel 2 - Dialogue 2

They were filming really late at night one night. Someone on the set was running around looking for Reel 2 Dialogue 2. Then someone shouted. 'R2-D2!' George Lucas liked that name and decided to use it in Star Wars.

16. This character, though he became part of the Rebel Alliance, was portrayed as a "bad man" for being a smuggler and a "scoundrel." He once said, "I'm in it for the money."

From Quiz Bad Men

Answer: Han Solo

Han came into the story as a hired pilot; when the group inadvertently ended up on the Death Star, Luke had to convince Han to help save Princess Leia by convincing him that "she's rich" and that the reward would be "more wealth than you can imagine," to which Han responded, "I don't know, I can imagine quite a bit."

17. Which officer gives the order which means that the Millenium Falcon cannot leave Hoth?

From Quiz "You Rebel Scum!"

Answer: General Rieekan

Han had been planning to leave the rebels to pay his debt to Jabba the Hutt. However, General Rieekan had decreed that no ship should leave the system until the energy shield around Hoth had been activated.

18. Which imperial officer leads the AT-AT attack on Echo Base on Hoth?

From Quiz "I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing"

Answer: General Veers

Veers is very cool and assured during the battle and rightly so, as he successfully destroys the rebels' power generator.

19. 'Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.' - ____

From Quiz 'Star Wars' Quotes

Answer: Yoda

Part of Luke's training on Dagobah when he doubts his power in the Force.

20. What is the number of the trash compactor that Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewbacca are trapped in in 'A New Hope'?

From Quiz 'Star Wars' Part 1 of 2

Answer: 3263827

'Shut down all the garbage mashers on the detention level!'

21. Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi is presented as a 'crazy old man' before we meet him onscreen, but we quickly see him for the wise mentor that he becomes for Luke. What is the first thing we hear from Obi-Wan following the attack on Luke by the Sand People?

From Quiz "Star Wars" Episodes IV-VI: Their First Lines

Answer: "Hello there! Come here my little friend. Don't be afraid."

After Luke and C-3PO are attacked by Sand People, R2-D2 watches from a hiding place as Luke's speeder is being picked through. Along comes Obi-Wan Kenobi, a shadowy figure that scares off the Sand People. When R2 makes a small sound, 'Ben' turns to him and pulls back his hood, then tries to coax him out of hiding. Of the other quotes given, two of them are during the first conversation that Obi-Wan has with Luke; the other one ("In my experience, there's no such thing as luck.") is spoken while training Luke on the Millennium Falcon, in response to Han Solo's scoffing.

22. If this bad man had his way, Obi Wan and Luke would have had to hire another pilot to take them to Alderaan. With the release of the special edition movie, many people have questioned the depiction of who shot first.

From Quiz Bad Men

Answer: Greedo

Many "Star Wars" faithful believe that Han originally shot first, while George Lucas maintains that the original recording was edited in such a way that Greedo can be incorrectly perceived as shooting first.

23. C-3PO, or Threepio, is often the recipient of funny nicknames. Which one was he never called?

From Quiz "Star Wars" Nicknames, Insults and Titles

Answer: Jabberjaw

In "The Empire Strikes Back", Han Solo calls Threepio "goldenrod" when they're racing to escape from Hoth, and "professor" when Threepio says that the asteroid the Falcon is hiding in "may not be entirely stable". R2-D2 calls Threepio a "mindless philosopher" when Artoo is trying to convince Threepio to get in the escape pod at the beginning of "A New Hope". Jabberjaw is the title character from a 1970's cartoon, though considering how much Threepio talks, Jabberjaw would fit him.

24. Major Derlin is played by which actor?

From Quiz "You Rebel Scum!"

Answer: John Ratzenberger

John Ratzenberger later found fame as Cliff in "Cheers" and Hamm the piggy bank in "Toy Story". He had a small role in "The Empire Stikes Back", advising Han Solo that the speeders hadn't yet been adapted for the cold of Hoth. Denis Lawson, the uncle of Ewan McGregor, played Wedge Antilles. Jeremy Bulloch played Boba Fett. To my knowledge, Kelsey Grammer has not appeared in any of the "Star Wars" films.

25. Who is the only Imperial Officer to appear in more than one of the original "Star Wars" films?

From Quiz "I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing"

Answer: Admiral Piett

Captain Piett is promoted to admiral on the death of Admiral Ozzel in "The Empire Strikes Back" and given control of the imperial fleet. He later appears, still commanding the Super Star Destroyer "Executor", in "Return of the Jedi", dying when an errant rebel fighter crashes into the bridge of that ship. General Veers appears in only "The Empire Strikes Back" while Admiral Motti and General Tagge both appear only in "A New Hope". Apparently Moff Jerjerrod, who originally appeared in only "Return of the Jedi", appears in the Special Edition of "The Empire Strikes Back" as that edition utilised archive footage from "Return of the Jedi".

26. 'This deal is getting _____ all the time' - Lando Calrissian

From Quiz 'Star Wars' Quotes

Answer: worse

After Darth Vader commands Calrissian to take Leia and Chewie to Vader's ship.

27. Who is Lando's co-pilot when he flies the Millennium Falcon in the attack on the second Death Star?

From Quiz 'Star Wars' Part 1 of 2

Answer: Nien Nunb

28. Unlike the Sand People, who, according to Obi-Wan Kenobi, "always travel single file to hide their numbers," which bad men were believed to have traveled through Tatooine side by side in search of the Empire's secret plans?

From Quiz Bad Men

Answer: Imperial Storm Troopers

The Empire was trying to track down the droids (C-3PO and R2-D2) that stowed away on an escape pod in the belief that they were carrying secret plans for the Death Star that was still being built. After finding the Jawas' trading post destroyed, Luke realizes that the Storm Troopers must have found out who the droids were sold to; he raced to his home to find it was also destroyed.

29. Who opens the tactical briefing to the rebel troops in "Return of the Jedi", regarding the proposed attack on the second Death Star, with these words: "The Emperor has made a critical error and the time for our attack has come."?

From Quiz "You Rebel Scum!"

Answer: Mon Mothma

Emperor Palpatine had, in fact, allowed the rebels to know the location of the unfinished Death Star and it's shield generator. He intended to lure the rebels into a trap and finally crush the rebellion.

30. Which officer voices concerns about a possible area of weakness on the original Death Star?

From Quiz "I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing"

Answer: General Tagge

His concerns are dismissed by Admiral Motti but, of course, are ultimately proved to be justified.
