1. What did teams need to find at the Beihai Street Mall in Beijing (in the second half of Leg 10) to receive their clue?

Picking up where the race was left off, teams were told that their tenth leg of the race would not be finished quite yet. Phil met teams at the North Gate of the Beijing Drum Tower to tell them that Leg 10 was only half-done and he handed them their next clue. This led the tired teams to Beihai Street Mall in Beijing where teams needed to locate their next clue box and then find one of four Travelocity roaming gnomes hidden in the storefronts of the building. Teams found their next clue on the bottom of these and were told to bring their gnomes to the Pit Stop.

Answer: Guilin

In the start of Leg 9, teams departed from the eighth Pit Stop at the Phaya Thai Palace in Bangkok, Thailand and were told to fly several hundred miles to the Guangxi Province of China and the city of Guilin. All five remaining teams departed within a six hour time frame in the morning and needed to make their way to the international airport in Bangkok. From here, most teams connected in the city of Guangzhou before making their way to Guilin though not all of them traveled together.

Teams began Leg 7 departing from Jaigarh Fort in the city of Jaipur, India and were told to fly to Phuket, Thailand. All six teams ended up taking a trip on the same flight through Bangkok, Thailand landing fourteen hours after their departure. Heading into even hotter weather than in India, the six teams hopped into taxis and were led through Phuket with nothing more than a picture for reference.

Heading out from the race's fourth Pit Stop outside the Krasnoyarsk Theater of Musical Comedy in the beginning of Leg 5, teams needed to head to the central train station in Krasnoyarsk to hitch a ride on the Trans-Siberian Railway. All seven remaining teams needed to take a ride over four hundred miles through Siberia to their next destination, the city of Novosibirsk, Russia's third-largest city and the largest in Siberia. Because of departure times, all seven teams rode the train overnight.

In the beginning of Leg 3, teams departed from the Pit Stop at the Schloss Hellbrunn in Salzburg, Austria and needed to take a train to the city of Munich, Germany to catch their next flight. Although Tammy and Victor shot ahead on a good flight, technical difficulties with their plane brought them back to a later flight with some of the other teams. Their destination: seven hundred miles away to Bucharest, Romania.

Teams arrived at the starting line of the race in military helicopters, and upon arriving at Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base, Phil Keoghan sent the eleven teams of two off on their race around the world for one million dollars. At his 'GO!' teams made their way to their first clues laying on their backpacks and were told to fly to Europe to make their way to Locarno, Switzerland. To do this, teams would need to hop into a marked car and get to Los Angeles International Airport where they would need to secure tickets on one of two possible flights to their next destinations.

After an overnight stay in Locarno, Switzerland, teams took an early trip to the Verzasca Dam in Tenero-Contra to complete the first Road Block of the race. for this task, one member of each team needed to perform a seventy story bungee jump over the edge of the dam. Jaime, Jen, Jodi, Kris, Luke, Michael, Mike, Preston, Steve, Victor, and Victoria completed this Road Block before teams made their way to Kleine Rugen Wiese in Interlaken, Switzerland.

Answer: Electric bike

Reading the bottom of their Travelocity roaming gnomes, teams were told to head to Gugong Xibei Jiao, the Northwest Corner of the Forbidden City. Here, teams found a clue telling them to make their way to their next destination atop electric bikes. This trail would lead teams through Tiananmen Square to their next clue box at Dongdan Station. By the time the teams arrived at the bikes, many of them were facing the first rays of daylight having raced through most of the night.

Upon arriving in Guilin, teams needed to travel by taxi into the city to reach the Qingxiu Lu Hair Salon. Because of arrival times, many teams got caught up here waiting for the establishment to open. When Mark and Michael arrived they were met with their Speed Bump task requiring that they stay at the salon to wash and dry the hair of two Chinese women to the satisfaction of a hairdresser to continue on with the race.

Since the beginning of the leg, the only item given to teams as a hint of where to go in Phuket was a picture of a gorilla statue. Teams found this statue holding their clue in the Phuket Zoo where teams were then required to take a picture with a tiger (whose attraction was operated by a one-armed man, no less). While waiting for their picture and subsequent clue to develop, teams needed to participate in an elephant performance in which teams were lightly stepped-on and squatted-on by elephants.

Upon arriving in the city of Novosibirsk, teams were told to take a taxi from the train station to Punkt Tekhnicheskogo Osmotra where they would receive a stick-shift car and their next clue, the Detour for this leg of the race. In the 'Russian Snowplow' task, teams needed to travel through the city to find a marked parking lot. Here, both team members, one at a time, needed to enter a cumbersome Russian snowplow and drive this heavy machinery along a marked course (and turn it around) to receive the next clue. Tammy and Victor, Jaime and Cara, Margie and Luke, and Mark and Michael finished this task.

While six teams flew to Zurich, Switzerland, the other five flew to Milan, Italy. Once at their respective destinations, teams needed to take the train to their clue at Locarno. For some teams, this was a chance to get ahead on the Swiss rails. Upon arriving in Locarno, teams needed to locate the Church of Sant'Antonio where they could sign up for one of three departure times leaving the next morning. Everyone settled in for an overnight stay at a local hotel in the meantime.

Answer: Kisha and Jen

In Leg 3, teams headed by plane to Romania and then by train through the countryside to the town of Brasov in Transylvania. Here, teams located a Detour task at Biserica Neagra requiring the choice between 'Gypsy Move' and 'Vampire Remains'. In the former task, completed by Mike and Mel, Kisha and Jen, Amanda and Kris, and Mark and Michael, teams headed to a gypsy encampment and loaded belongings onto a horse-drawn cart to transport them to a nearby field. In 'Vampire Remains', the other five teams headed to a forest near Bran Castle to open coffins and stake wooden frames hidden inside to find race flags to trade for their next clue. After this, teams headed to the third Pit Stop at Vila Panoramic.

Answer: Tammy and Victor

In Dongdan Station, teams found the Detour for this leg. Tammy and Victor chose 'Chinese Waiter' in which they needed to travel to a Chinese restaurant, take four orders (in Chinese), and relay them to the chef. Then, they needed to deliver the proper items to the proper customers to receive their clue. The other three teams completed 'Beijing Opera' in which they needed to head to a local opera house and paint their faces to match two models. When properly completed, the racers could claim their clue. After the Detour, teams visited Huguang Guild Hall to find the final U-Turn of the race and Tammy and Victor used this to make Kisha and Jen complete 'Chinese Waiter' as well.

Answer: Mark and Michael

After departing from the Phuket Zoo, teams needed to head to Old Phuket to locate the city's oldest herb shop, Nguan Choon Tong Herbs Shop. Here, teams needed to ask the man behind the counter to open the ninety-nine drawers in the room, one at a time, until they located their next clue (in only six drawers). While Jaime and Cara arrived at this task first, they were one of the last to leave. Mark and Michael ended up breezing through this task getting a quick lead.

Answer: An apartment complex

In the 'Russian Bride' option of this leg's Detour, teams needed to drive themselves through Novosibirsk to find a Soviet apartment complex. Then they needed to locate a specific building and room containing their proper bride. Continuing on, teams took their bride along for the ride to deliver her to the proper groom at a church in downtown Novosibirsk, Voznesensky Cathedral. Mel and Mike, Kisha and Jen, and Christie and Jodi completed this task and received their next clue from the happy couple.

After the Road Block, teams were required to make their way to the next clue in the city of Brasov in Transylvania. To do this, all of the teams needed to take a train ride from the city of Bucharest over a hundred and fifty miles away. Upon arriving at Bisemca Niegra, teams found their Detour task. In 'Gypsy Move', teams needed to head to a nearby gypsy encampment, load a number of belongings onto a cart, and move them to another property using a horse-drawn trolley. Mel and Mike, Mark and Michael, Kisha and Jen and Amanda and Kris completed this task.

The following morning, the priest at Church of Sant'Antonio gave teams the image of Verzasca Dam located in the city of Tenero-Contra. Teams made their way there to find a daunting Road Block task. For this task, one member of each team was required to strap into a harness and perform the world's second-highest bungee jump. Once that team member made it back to the top, they would be able to continue on. Jaime, Jen, Jodi, Kris, Luke, Michael, Mike, Preston, Steve, Victor, and Victoria completed this task before carrying on with the leg.

In Leg 4, teams made their way to Siberia, Russia and teams completed a series of tasks relating to the locals' way of life. In the Detour, found at the Church of Saint Innokenty in Ovsyanka, teams chose between 'Stack' and 'Construct'. In 'Stack', teams needed to properly stack a wall of firewood next to a given example. If this wall (or the example) fell over, teams would need to build up both. Christie and Jodi, Kisha and Jen, Margie and Luke, Jaime and Cara, and Tammy and Victor finished 'Stack'. In 'Construct', teams needed to head to a nearby village and construct and mount a set of window shutters. Mike and Mel, Mark and Michael, and Amanda and Kris finished this. After the Detour, Margie and Luke used a 'Blind U-Turn' to anonymously force Amanda and Kris to return and complete the other Detour task causing their elimination.

Answer: Gymnastics

In Leg 3, teams flew to the city of Bucharest, Romania and found their Road Block task waiting at Complexul Sportiv National Lia Manoliu, a gymnast training center in the heart of Romania's capital. Here, one member of each team needed to wear a gymnastic outfit and perform routines on the balance beam, the parallel bars, and on the floor in order to receive their next clue. Amanda, Margie, Mike, Mark, Kisha, Jaime, Jodi, Tammy, and Victoria performed this Road Block task before moving on to Transylvania.

Answer: Cockroach

After the Detour and U-Turn, the teams needed to make their way to Donghuamen Night Market to purchase some items for their Road Block which required that teams choose a member who's adventurous. For this task, completed by Victor, Margie, Cara, and Jen, the selected members had to eat fried grasshopper, scorpion, larva, and starfish in order to receive their next clue. Unsurprisingly, even the locals watching were kind of disturbed.

Answer: 'Calligraphy'

After the Road Block, teams made their way by taxi to an ancient landmark known as the Ancient South Gate. Here, teams found their Detour task, a choice between 'Choreography' and 'Calligraphy', both different ways of expression in Guilin. In 'Calligraphy', Tammy and Victor, Kisha and Jen, and Margie and Luke all needed to collect a pad of paper and transcribe Chinese calligraphy to the approval of a number of different writers in different spots around the nearby lake. Once teams finished with four separate spots, they could receive their next clue. Jaime and Cara and Mark and Michael completed 'Choreography' in which both team members needed to learn a dance routine and perform it for the duration of a song to the approval of two judges.

Answer: Kisha and Jen

After visiting the herb shop, teams received the Detour task for this leg of the race. The required a choice between '100 Barrels' and '2 Miles'. In '100 Barrels' (chosen by Kisha and Jen and Mel and Mike') teams headed to a harbour in Phuket to load a boat with barrels. Over fifty barrels needed to be passed to the top of the boat while just under fifty barrels needed to be filled with freshwater on the bottom. Teams choosing '2 Miles' needed to find a set of rickshaws in Phuket and transport them two miles through the city to their next clue box. One team member needed to pilot the rickshaw while the other needed to sit inside. Teams could not be guided by a taxi in this task. Tammy and Victor, Jaime and Cara, Mark and Michael, and Margie and Luke finished '2 Miles'.

Answer: Team members performed it in their underwear.

After the Detour, teams received a clue leading them to the ridiculously-long-named Gosudarstvennaya Publichnaya Nauchnaya Tekhnicheskaya Biblioteka. This library housed their next task, the Road Block for this leg of the race. Here, one member with enough stamina and no shame was required to strip down to their underwear and perform a mile and a half jog through the city of Novosibirsk in below-freezing weather. Luke, Cara, Tammy, Mike, Mark, Jen, and Christie finished this Road Block.

Answer: Cheese

After the Road Block, teams headed to the train station to catch a ride to the city of Interlaken where they located their next clue box at Kleine Rugen Wiese. Here, both team members needed to strap into traditional cheese-carrying equipment and climb a steep hill to transport four wheels of cheese to the bottom. Each wheel weighed fifty pounds. As soon as teams stacked their wheels at the bottom of the hill, they were able to receive their next clue.

Heading across Russia via the Trans-Siberian Railway, teams found a Detour task at the Punkt Tekhnicheskogo Osmotra in Novosibirsk and chose between 'Russian Bride' and 'Russian Snowplow'. In 'Russian Bride', teams needed to locate the apartment of a Russian bride in a complex in Novosibirsk, then drive her to her groom at a city chapel. Mel and Mike, Kisha and Jen, and Christie and Jodi finished this Detour task. In 'Russian Snowplow', teams needed to go to a city lot and drive a large Russian snowplow along a marked course to receive their clue. Tammy and Victor, Margie and Luke, Jaime and Cara, and Mark and Michael completed this one.

Answer: Kisha and Jen

After the Road Block, teams were told to head to the final Pit Stop of the race, the Bird's Nest (Niao Chao), also known as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Stadium. Tammy and Victor, who led through most of the leg, were the first to arrive at this mat (with their Travelocity roaming gnome) and they won a trip for two to the Galapagos Islands. They were followed by Margie and Luke and Jaime and Cara who would join them in the final leg while Kisha and Jen were unable to make up the time that they lost from the U-Turn.

In the end of Leg 9, teams completed the Detour to receive an image of the vantage point from their next Pit Stop. This spot overlooked the Sun and Moon Pagodas in Guilin, and teams made their way on foot to this location. Although the footrace was a close one, Kisha and Jen stepped on the mat first to claim their first victory of the race. The two of them won a trip for two to Barbados from Travelocity. In the end, Mark and Michael were unable to overcome their Speed Bump and extensive time penalty from the previous leg (a total of four hours) and they were eliminated.

In an eventful final sprint at the end of this leg, teams made their way to the seventh Pit Stop, Wat Thep Nimit Temple in Phuket. Mark and Michael arrived first, but were forced to wait out two thirty minute penalties, the first for intentionally hiding elements of the '2 Miles' Detour and the second for getting their taxi to lead them through the challenge. Tammy and Victor ended up arriving to take the first place position fifty-eight minutes into the penalty and were rewarded with a trip for two to Oahu care of Travelocity. Jaime and Cara also took second place before Mark and Michael checked in. In the end, it was Mel and Mike who were unable to recover from an early setback and they were eliminated from the race.

At the end of the Road Block, team members arrived at the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre where their teammate waited and where they could check into their fifth Pit Stop in the main theater. Here, Margie and Luke placed first (their second time in the race) and won a trip for two to St. Lucia courtesy of Travelocity. Christie and Jodi, who placed first in the previous leg, fell to last place in Novosibirsk and arrived in seventh. Luckily, the two had done so on the first of only two non-elimination legs of the race.
