Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To which Chinese city did teams travel in the beginning of Leg 9?

Answer: Guilin

In the start of Leg 9, teams departed from the eighth Pit Stop at the Phaya Thai Palace in Bangkok, Thailand and were told to fly several hundred miles to the Guangxi Province of China and the city of Guilin. All five remaining teams departed within a six hour time frame in the morning and needed to make their way to the international airport in Bangkok. From here, most teams connected in the city of Guangzhou before making their way to Guilin though not all of them traveled together.
2. After placing last in Leg 8, which team needed to complete a Speed Bump task in Leg 9 (in China)?

Answer: Mark and Michael

Upon arriving in Guilin, teams needed to travel by taxi into the city to reach the Qingxiu Lu Hair Salon. Because of arrival times, many teams got caught up here waiting for the establishment to open. When Mark and Michael arrived they were met with their Speed Bump task requiring that they stay at the salon to wash and dry the hair of two Chinese women to the satisfaction of a hairdresser to continue on with the race.
3. In the Road Block task in Leg 9 in China, teams needed to use which of these to catch fish?

Answer: A trained bird

After visiting the hair salon, teams made their way by taxi to the #24 Bridge overlooking the Li River where they found their next clue box, this one containing a Road Block task. In this Road Block, both team members needed to hop into a boat and head to the middle of the lake, but the one participating member needed to use a cormorant to catch fish in the lake (part of a training exercise for cormorants). Once the bird caught ten fish they could return to land for their next clue. Tammy, Jaime, Jen, Luke, and Michael completed this task.
4. Which Detour task in Leg 9 (in China) was completed by more teams?

Answer: 'Calligraphy'

After the Road Block, teams made their way by taxi to an ancient landmark known as the Ancient South Gate. Here, teams found their Detour task, a choice between 'Choreography' and 'Calligraphy', both different ways of expression in Guilin. In 'Calligraphy', Tammy and Victor, Kisha and Jen, and Margie and Luke all needed to collect a pad of paper and transcribe Chinese calligraphy to the approval of a number of different writers in different spots around the nearby lake. Once teams finished with four separate spots, they could receive their next clue. Jaime and Cara and Mark and Michael completed 'Choreography' in which both team members needed to learn a dance routine and perform it for the duration of a song to the approval of two judges.
5. Which team was eliminated in China in Leg 9?

Answer: Mark and Michael

In the end of Leg 9, teams completed the Detour to receive an image of the vantage point from their next Pit Stop. This spot overlooked the Sun and Moon Pagodas in Guilin, and teams made their way on foot to this location. Although the footrace was a close one, Kisha and Jen stepped on the mat first to claim their first victory of the race.

The two of them won a trip for two to Barbados from Travelocity. In the end, Mark and Michael were unable to overcome their Speed Bump and extensive time penalty from the previous leg (a total of four hours) and they were eliminated.
6. To what major city in China were teams told to travel in the first half of Leg 10?

Answer: Beijing

Teams departed from the Pit Stop in Guilin, China in the afternoon and were told to fly over a thousand miles to China's capital city, Beijing, to receive their next clue. All four teams remaining in the race were able to catch the same flight out of Guilin's airport and thus arrived in the late evening at their destination. Teams departed from the Pit Stop within a half-hour of one another and were given forty dollars for this leg.
7. What did team members need to 'endure' during the Road Block task in the first half of Leg 10?

Answer: A foot massage

Teams needed to make their way by taxi to the Liangzi Foot Massage Palace in the Jianguomen region of the city to find their next clue box, and here, one member of each team was informed that they would need to participate in a Road Block task. In possibly the most hilariously-painful Road Block of the season, one member of each team needed to drink herbal tea and participate in a ten minute foot massage.

This would prove to be quite difficult as team members needed to endure awful foot pain to complete the task. If the team member needed to stop the massage for any reason, they would need to start over from the beginning of the ten minutes. Cara, Luke, Tammy, and Kisha endured this task.
8. How many teams completed the 'Sync' Detour task in the first half of Leg 10 (in China)?

Answer: None

After an excruciating Road Block task, teams made their way to the Guangcai Natatorium to find their Detour task for this leg of the race. One of these tasks, 'Sync', was originally chosen by Tammy and Victor and Kisha and Jen. In this task, teams needed to fit into Olympic-style diving outfits and take to the springboards to dive for their next clue. If both members touched the water at the same time, as per two judges, they would be given a score of 5 by both and would receive their clue, otherwise, with any lower core, they would need to keep diving.
9. In the 'Swim' Detour option in the first half of Leg 10 (in China), teams needed to swim a total of how far?

Answer: 400m

In the 'Swim' Detour option, teams needed to wear Speedo outfits and swim a total of 400m in an Olympic pool taking 100m intervals twice each. The time to do this didn't matter for the task although players would be able to compare their time to that of Michael Phelps who won the '400m individual medley' in the 2008 Olympics (amongst other events).

Although all four teams completed this task in the long run, only Margie and Luke and Jaime and Cara originally chose to complete it.
10. Which team was the first to arrive at the mat at the Drum Tower in Leg 10's first half?

Answer: Jaime and Cara

After completing the Detour, teams were told to hurry to the north gate of the Beijing Drum Tower where Phil and the mat would be waiting. What teams didn't know was that this would not be a Pit Stop and that they would be receiving another clue to continue on with the second half of their tenth leg. Jaime and Cara, who were the only team to that point not to win a leg, arrived first and they were followed by Margie and Luke, Tammy and Victor, and Kisha and Jen.
