Arriving in Iquique, Chile in the first leg, teams were surprised to select a Road Block participant with a clever twist. The person selected needed to be good at 'follow the leader', taking a cab to where their partner, paragliding over the beach, was expected to land. Nicole, Ephraim, Ashley, Jamal, Nicki, Shane, Marie, Adam, Amy, Naina, and Danny completed this one while the paragliding companion took on the second Road Block at Muelle Prat, a task requiring them to hop into a rowboat and collect five fish from boats in the harbour to hand off to a fishmonger. Travis, Chester, Ally, Leo, Kim, Rowan, Tim, Brandon, Jason, Hoskote, and Tim completed this one.

Answer: Tokyo

In Leg 11, the four remaining teams were told to fly from Bandung on the island of Java in Indonesia to Tokyo, the capital city of Japan. Although not all of the teams ended up in Tokyo at the same time, everyone had to find their first clue waiting on the grounds of the Gotokuji Temple in the Setagaya district of Tokyo, a sacred place home to thousands of Maneki Neko figurines. This would be their Detour-- the last one of the race.

Answer: Bandung

Heading out from the eighth Pit Stop at the Mercure Grand Hotel atop Jebel Hafeet, teams were told to head to the airport in Abu Dhabi and to fly their way to the city of Bandung, Indonesia on the island of Java (which was done via Singapore). Leo and Jamal, who overslept at the Pit Stop in Leg 8, left for Leg 9 with Ally and Ashley, later than their regularly-scheduled departure time. Nonetheless, all five teams were on the same flight to Southeast Asia.

Answer: Abu Dhabi

Teams departed from the Gloriette of Vienna, Austria's Schönbrunn Palace in the order which they arrived and, upon opening their clues, they were told to fly from Central Europe to the Middle East, specifically the city of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Upon arriving in this city, teams were told to take a taxi to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque where they would have to observe local customs to head inside and receive their next piece of Route Info.

Answer: Gdañsk

Continuing immediately from their non-Pit Stop at the end of Leg 4 in a Viking Longhouse in Vestvåg¸y, Norway, teams were told to fly to Gdañsk, Poland. Because of this (and perhaps despite the level playing field at the start of Leg 4), all eight teams were once again equalized heading to this port city in Poland. Upon their arrival, teams needed to take a cab to Solidarity Square, a site of importance to the fall of communism, in the Gdañsk Shipyard. After this, teams continued on to the Golden Gate in Gdañsk's marketplace.

Answer: Lisbon

Departing from Cascada de las Animas outside Santiago, Chile in Leg 3, teams were told to head to a travel agent (and the airport) to get to Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, as fast as possible. This proved more difficult than it let on from the clue as many teams had to deal with difficult and multiple connections, often landing at vastly different times from other teams. Nonetheless, all teams eventually made it and, upon their arrival, had to find a tram at Martim Moniz Square which would take them to their next destination.

Answer: California

In this twenty-third race, eleven teams reached the starting line for a race around the world by carriage on an old west street in the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio in Santa Clarita, California. When they were given the go-ahead, the teams were told to hop into their Ford C-Max Energi hybrid vehicles, listen to their clue on the onboard console, and drive to LAX to catch one of two flights to the Pacific Coast of South America; seven teams caught the first flight and four caught the second.

Answer: Ballista

Visiting Clube Português de Tiro a Chumbo outside of Lisbon, team members needed to 'have a hand for slings and arrows' as they donned a knight's suit of armor and used a ballista to aim and hit a shield posted on a wall 150 feet away. If they struck the shield, they could claim it and read a clue on the back directing them to their next Pit Stop. This task was completed by Jason, Travis, Kim, Danny, Adam, Ally, Jamal, and Tim. Neither Chester nor Ephraim completed the task since they were eliminated before arriving there.

Answer: 'Tiles'

Reaching the Museu Nacional Dos Coches in Lisbon, Portugal, teams located a clue containing their Detour options. In 'Tiles', completed by Nicky and Kim, Brandon and Adam, Ally and Ashley, Leo and Jamal, and Tim and Marie, teams had to assemble a life-size ceramic tile puzzle of a historical figure to get their clue. In 'Miles' Nicole and Travis, Jason and Amy, and Tim and Danny headed to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos where they had to use a giant compass and measure the total distance it took Magellan to circumnavigate the globe (using a large map). If they calculated the total within five hundred miles they would get their next clue. Chester and Ephraim were unable to make it to Lisbon in time to complete either task.

Answer: Rams

Once there, teams needed to take a taxi to Cikapandang Village and, upon arrival, collect two rams from down the street and deliver them to the arena. After they watched the rams fight each other, ramming into each other with their horns, they had to return them to their trucks to get their next clue. After this, they needed to take a taxi to board a train taking them from Rancaekek Station back to Bandung. Their next clue box would be on the train platform.

Answer: Fishing nets

After visiting the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, teams were informed that they would have to take a taxi to the Irani Souk for their next clue. Here, they found their Detour task for this leg of the race. Teams choosing to complete the 'Sew It Up' task were required to head down to the waterfront to find a station in the dhow harbour. Once there they needed to use the material provided to weave together a local fishing cage and, when the local fisherman approved of their creation, they would receive their next clue. Nicole and Travis and Jason and Amy went for this task.

Answer: Tim and Marie

Arriving at the Golden Gate, teams needed to select a Detour task. They could complete either 'Pose' or 'Polka'. In 'Pose', teams needed to dress up as Neptune and mimic a statue to earn seventy-five zloty from locals. Once they raised enough money they could continue the leg... in their costumes. Nicky and Kim finished this task while Tim and Marie used the Express Pass to skip it. The other teams finished 'Polka' in which they visited the Old Town Hall, dressed in traditional garb, and learned a polka to be danced for their next clue. All remaining teams completed this dance.

Answer: Iquique

Flying southward to Iquique, Chile, the teams were told to hop into cabs upon landing to make their way to the Zona de Parapentes atop Alto Hospicio overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There, they met Javier, the man who gave them the clue in their Ford hybrids back in California, on a cliff overlooking the beaches below.

Answer: Amy

Taking a boat ride to Henningsvær, teams disembarked to find a Road Block task. There, the selected team member had to wear a wetsuit and swing off the Henningsvær Bridge. When ready, they then needed to unclip themselves from the line and plunge into the waters of the Arctic Ocean and swim to their next clue on a marked buoy. Brandon, Jason, Tim, Nicole, Ashley, Jamal, Tim, and Nicky were selected to be 'swingers' in this leg of the race.

Answer: Fishing

Visiting Svolvaer, Norway in the middle of the night, teams had a sunshiney go at two Detour options involving dealing with cod fish, a local staple. In 'Hang Your Heads', teams got messy stringing together six bundles of ten fishheads each. They then had transport the lines to drying racks and lay them out. Jason and Amy, Brandon and Adam, Nicole and Travis, Tim and Marie, Ally and Ashley, and Leo and Jamal headed to this one. In 'Hammer of the Cods', teams instead had to collect fifteen pairs of cod from 30-foot-high drying racks and pound them to make one kilogram of fish jerky, removing bones on the way. Nicky and Kim and Tim and Danny went to this task.

Answer: Dates

Those opting not to complete 'Sew It Up' instead went with 'Sort It Out', a Detour task which required that teams head to the Al Mina Vegetable Market to create a platter of dates to replicate an existing model. Teams had to take their dates from an array of stands around the area. Leo and Jamal, Ally and Ashley, Nicky and Kim, and Tim and Marie finished this task and, when they were done, rushed off to catch a boat at the Al Bandar Marina departing once every thirty minutes for the nearby Yas Island.

Answer: Two

After the Detour, teams needed to find the tallest building on Motùawa River, the Medieval Harbor Crane, to find the Double U-Turn. Once there they had a choice of forcing another team to complete the second Detour option they didn't complete earlier. Tim and Danny used the U-Turn to send Leo and Jamal back to complete 'Pose' while Leo and Jamal did the same to Brandon and Adam to protect themselves. After this, teams were handed their next clue by the crane operator.

Answer: Five

After finding their clue at the National Coach Museum, the teams ended up needing to complete a Detour task-- a choice between 'Tiles' and 'Miles'. In 'Tiles', teams headed to Fábrica Sant'Ana where they had to complete a puzzle using ceramic tiles; in 'Miles' they headed to Padrão dos Descobrimentos to track Ferdinand Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe with a large compass, tracking the distance to within five hundred miles of the actual journey-- 16,500 miles. Nicky and Kim, Brandon and Adam, Leo and Jamal, Ally and Ashley, and Tim and Marie completed 'Tiles' while the others finished 'Miles'.

Answer: Poland

Reaching the longest apartment building in Gdansk, Przymorze's Falowiec, teams found a Road Block task that required they search through twelve provided addresses for one containing a tenant serving rose paczkis, pastries with a rose filling that they could trade for their next clue. Teams were also informed that they could be penalized for exhibiting bad manners upon their visit though this did not come into play. Marie, Amy, Kim, Travis, Danny, Ashley, Leo, and Adam ended up taking a bite out of this challenge before heading to the Pit Stop.

Answer: A musical instrument

After the Detour task, teams had to hop into cabs and hitch a ride to the Saung Angklung Udjo in Padasuka. Once there, teams had to choose one member with musical talent to construct an angklung using pieces mixed into a pile on the floor. Once the team member had constructed the device and could play a full octave, they would be able to receive their next clue. Nicole, Leo, Amy, Tim, and Ashley completed this task, though an entire emotional breakdown almost ensued when an exhausted Nicole was unable to solve the puzzle or look off others' instruments for guidance.

Answer: Rose

After the U-Turn, teams were told to find the longest apartment complex in all of Poland. Traveling by taxi they ended up finding it, the Falowiec Apartment Complex, and they searched for their clue outside. For this task, a Road Block, team members were given a list of apartments and told to visit as many as it would take to eat a Polish pastry, a pàczki, at each and find one containing rose-flavoured jelly. Amy, Marie, Travis, Kim, Danny, Leo, Ashley, and Adam completed this task.

Answer: Franz Schubert

Arriving at the Palais Augarten, one member of each team needed to be 'a choir boy at heart', and for this Road Block the selected team member had to work with an instructor to learn the words, tone, and musicality of Franz Schubert's "Die Forelle", performing it live with the Vienna Boys Choir. If they could get the pronounciation right and perform adequately enough to get through the piece without hiccups, they could get their next clue. Jamal, Ally, Nicky, Tim, Travis, Tim, and Amy were selected for this task.

Answer: Leo and Jamal

Finding their clue at the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, teams were told to proceed on foot to their next Pit Stop, the Konnō Hachimangū Shrine (which was also the first Pit Stop of "The Amazing Race 15"). Here, Tim and Marie won their third leg of the race, this time taking with them a trip for two to Aruba courtesy of Travelocity. It also secured their spot in the finals. After a rough Road Block (considering the help between Amy and Nicole) and having fallen behind during the Speed Bump, Leo and Jamal were last to arrive on the mat and they were the final eliminated team.

Answer: Ally and Ashley

After completing the Road Block task in Leg 9, teams were told to head to the next Pit Stop mat sitting in front of the Bosscha Observatory overlooking Lembang, Indonesia. Leo and Jamal took their second win of the race for leading the pack through the Road Block and, as a result, they won $7,500 each. Although they led through most of the leg, Ally and Ashley choked during the Detour task and fell too far back to stay in the race. They were the seventh team eliminated upon their arrival at the Pit Stop.

Answer: Nicky and Kim

After the Road Block, teams were reunited and told to race through the circuit building nearby to find the Pit Stop situated on the winners' podium overlooking the race course. Leo and Jamal were the first to arrive and were greeted with the typical champagne spray victory celebration. For winning their first leg, the duo ended up receiving a trip for two to Paris courtesy of Travelocity. The last team to arrive was Nicky and Kim, who fell behind at the marina. They were spared, however, since this was the first of only two non-elimination legs for the race.

Answer: Brandon and Adam

After their Road Block task, teams were told to find another of 'Poland's Longest', this time the longest wooden pier in the country. Taking taxis to Sopot Pier in Sopot, Poland, they were told to race on foot to the next Pit Stop at the very end. Here, Tim and Marie, who used their Express Pass, placed first merely seconds ahead of two other leading teams. They won a trip for two to Hawaii courtesy of Travelocity for their efforts. After being U-Turned, Brandon and Adam ended up arriving in last place (despite a first place victory in Leg 4) and they were eliminated from the race.

Answer: Chester and Ephraim

After the Road Block task, the teams headed onward via taxi to their third Pit Stop of the race in the town of Sintra, Portugal. Once teams ascended the battlements of Castelo dos Mouros they could check in with Phil at the mat. Nicole and Travis narrowly sneaked past Jason and Amy to claim their first win of the race, taking with them a trip for two to Costa Rica courtesy of Travelocity. In the end of the leg, Chester and Ephraim (who placed first in the previous leg) were eliminated upon arriving in Lisbon a day late. Phil met them at the airport to give them the bad news.

Answer: Hoskote and Naina

After the second Road Block, the teams were told to head on foot to their first Pit Stop, Teatro Municipal de Iquique. Although Travis and Nicole arrived first, they took a taxi to the mat and were served with a thirty minute penalty. As such, arguing exes Tim and Marie snagged first place and two Express Passes (one of which would need to be given to another team by Leg 5). In the end, it was Hoskote and Naina who arrived after sunset in last place. And so, Hoskote and Naina were eliminated and, as it seems, they didn't learn a thing from the experience.

Answer: Fishing nets

Visiting the Irani Souk in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in Leg 7, teams had to decide whether or not to 'Sort It Out' or 'Sew It Up'. Leo and Jamal, Ally and Ashley, Tim and Marie, and Nicky and Kim chose to 'Sort It Out', constructing a date platter by copying an exemplar and hunting for the correct ones in a marketplace. On the other side of this, Jason and Amy and Nicole and Travis opted to 'Sew It Up', creating a metal fishing net from scratch following a local fisherman's example.

Answer: Alaska

Leaving the final Pit Stop at the Konnō Hachimangū Shrine in Tokyo, Japan (at about the same time), the final three teams were told to fly to their final destination city: Juneau, Alaska. As is usually the case, all three teams were sent over the Pacific on the same flight, arriving in Juneau the next morning. Upon their arrival, the teams had to make their way by taxi to a ferry terminal where they would need to take a boat to Mendenhall Valley for their next clue.
